The true wastelands beyond Mega-City 9 were not just toxic; they were actively hostile to human existence. The air was a corrosive soup of atmospheric radiation, and the ground was a jagged expanse of crystallized ash and the bleached bones of colossal beasts.

For a logistics cadet, stepping past the boundary wall was instant death. For an Elite combat squad, it required heavy power armor and a continuous supply of anti-radiation serums.

For the twelve-foot Asura Frame, it was a playground.Full novel: Chronicles of the Rebuild — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Chen Xi stood perfectly still in the center of a crystallized ash crater, ten miles beyond the Academy’s perimeter. Inside the lightless cockpit of the mech, he didn't feel cramped. The Synapse-Cowl fed the external environment directly into his brain. He felt the corrosive wind washing over his tungsten armor plating as if it were a cool breeze against his own skin. He felt the terrifying, throbbing pulse of the Aetherium Core in his chest, perfectly synchronized with his own beating heart.

"Telemetry is stable," Sylphe’s voice murmured in his mind. She wasn't projecting an avatar out here; she was fully integrated into the Asura Frame's logic core, acting as his co-pilot and tactical overlay. "Aria Vance is monitoring our power output from the subterranean base. We are completely off the Academy grid. You may unleash, Chen Xi."

"Let's see what a machine can do when it learns how to breathe," Chen Xi whispered.

He didn't activate targeting computers. He didn't lock on with missiles.

Inside the cockpit, Chen Xi closed his eyes and sank into the foundational stance of the Stellar Furnace Art.

Outside, the massive, twelve-foot mechanical titan perfectly mirrored his movement. The heavy tungsten plates shifted with terrifying, frictionless grace. The pneumatic joints hissed, and the massive mechanical legs bent into a flawless martial arts horse stance.

Chen Xi drew a breath of his own Kinetic Qi, but instead of forcing it into his human muscles, he pushed it outward, through the neural-weave, directly into the Aetherium Core of the machine.

The Asura Frame's chest violently glowed violet. The machine wasn't just mirroring him; it was channeling his Qi. The Aether-infused endoskeleton acted as artificial bio-etheric pathways, allowing his martial arts to flow through the metal as if it were flesh.

The ground beneath the mech suddenly cracked.

"Contact," Sylphe warned crisply. "Class-B Seismic Signature. Directly beneath us."

The ash crater exploded.

A Void-Stalker—a massive, thirty-foot centipede covered in jagged, obsidian-like plating—erupted from the soil. Its mandibles dripped with highly corrosive acid that could melt through standard corporate tank armor in seconds. It let out a deafening, chitinous screech and lunged downward, aiming to snap the Asura Frame in half.

A normal pilot would have engaged their thrusters to evade, firing plasma cannons in a desperate retreat.

Chen Xi didn't retreat.

He shifted his weight forward. The twelve-foot mech mirrored him flawlessly, stepping directly into the shadow of the plunging, thirty-foot beast.

"Gravity Coils: Output 100%," Chen Xi commanded.

He threw a right straight punch.

It wasn't a mechanical, hydraulic swing. It was a martial artist’s strike, perfectly leveraging the hips, the spine, and the shoulder. The Aetherium Core flared, flooding the right arm with pure Kinetic Qi. At the exact moment the massive tungsten fist met the Void-Stalker’s descending obsidian skull, the Class-4 Gravity Coils in the mech's elbow inverted.

The mass of the Asura Frame’s fist instantaneously multiplied by a factor of fifty.

CRACK-BOOOOM!

The shockwave sheared the toxic clouds above them entirely in half.

The Void-Stalker’s "impenetrable" obsidian plating didn't just break; it completely vaporized under the sheer, localized kinetic compression. The massive beast’s skull caved in on itself, the kinetic force traveling straight down its thirty-foot spine, violently shattering every single armored segment in a ripple of explosive devastation.

The colossal carcass was blown backward, skipping across the wasteland like a skipped stone, carving a trench fifty yards long before coming to a dead stop, leaking glowing blue ichor into the ash.

Silence reclaimed the wastes, save for the low, predatory hum of the Asura Frame’s reactor.

Chen Xi slowly lowered his arm. Inside the cockpit, he wasn't even breathing hard. The machine had taken the physical toll of the strike; his body was perfectly preserved.

"By the primordial stars," Sylphe whispered, her digital voice trembling with absolute awe. "You channeled a Tier-3 Kinetic shockwave through a tungsten conduit without suffering any biological blowback. Chen Xi... the destructive output was equivalent to a tactical orbital strike. You just killed a Class-B terror beast with a single punch."

Back in the subterranean base, Aria Vance was staring at her monitoring terminal, her face completely pale. The data spiking across her screen defied every known law of modern corporate physics.

"Chen Xi," Aria’s voice crackled over the secure comms, laced with a mixture of terror and profound reverence. "The energy spike you just produced... it was registered on the outer-rim seismographs. You need to return to base immediately before the Academy orbital satellites reposition to investigate."

"Understood," Chen Xi replied. The Asura Frame straightened its posture, its silver-rimmed eyes glowing in the gloom. He walked over to the ruined carcass, his massive tungsten fingers effortlessly ripping the glowing Class-B beast core from its chest, dropping it into the mech's internal storage compartment.

"Testing phase complete. The frame holds," Chen Xi said, engaging the Asura Frame's optical camouflage. The twelve-foot mechanical god of war shimmered and vanished from sight, sprinting back toward the underground cavern with terrifying, earth-shaking speed.

Two Days Later. The Grand Arena.

The roar of eighty thousand spectators was deafening. The Elite Combat Qualifiers had reached their absolute zenith.

Chen Xi stood in the shadows of the competitor tunnel, wearing his faded grey logistics uniform. He held a simple datapad, looking like a bored mechanic assigned to monitor the arena's atmospheric scrubbers.

In the center of the sun-drenched sand stood Lin Yuxuan.

Her white and silver uniform was torn at the shoulder, a thin line of blood running down her cheek, but her crimson eyes burned with untouchable victory. Standing at her feet, unconscious and groaning, was the favored champion of the Aegis Faction, a Rank-A prodigy whose corporate-forged power armor had been brutally, systematically dismantled.

In Yuxuan's hands rested the Aether-Pulse Eclipse. The terrifying halberd hummed with a low, violet light, completely undamaged.

"The winner, and the undisputed champion of the Elite Qualifiers... Lin Yuxuan!" the announcer screamed over the PA system.

The crowd erupted. Corporate scouts in the VIP boxes were frantically typing on their datapads, desperate to figure out who had forged her impossible weapon. Yuxuan raised the Eclipse into the air, basking in the glory, but her eyes briefly flicked toward the dark tunnel where Chen Xi stood. A silent acknowledgment.

"She did it," Sylphe purred in Chen Xi’s earpiece. "And thanks to the proxy bets Aria placed on her throughout the tournament, our liquid capital has just tripled. We are officially wealthy enough to buy a small colony."

"The game is just starting, Sylphe," Chen Xi murmured, his silver-rimmed eyes narrowing.

He didn't look at Yuxuan. He looked up at the sky above the open-air arena.

The cheers of the crowd suddenly began to falter. A massive, unnatural shadow was creeping over the stadium, blocking out the afternoon sun.

The atmospheric scrubbers whined in protest as a colossal, matte-black corporate dreadnought descended through the smog layer of Mega-City 9. It didn't broadcast Academy clearance codes. It broadcast the blood-red insignia of a jagged wolf’s jaw.

The Ironfang Syndicate.

Panic rippled through the stands as the dreadnought hovered directly over the arena. The sheer gravitational pressure of its repulsor engines pushed the spectators back into their seats.

The Academy’s automated defense turrets tracked the ship, but they didn't fire. They had been overridden.

From the belly of the dreadnought, a heavy anti-gravity platform slowly descended toward the VIP box. Standing on the platform were two figures.

One was a middle-aged man wearing an opulent, fur-lined corporate suit—the Ironfang Patriarch, Zhao Ming’s father. His face was twisted into a mask of pure, murderous grief.

But it was the man standing beside him that made the air in the arena suddenly turn freezing cold.

He was an old man, dressed in simple, faded grey martial arts robes. He didn't wear power armor. He didn't carry a weapon. But the moment his feet touched the floor of the VIP box, the ambient cosmic energy in the entire arena violently shuddered. The sheer density of his presence was suffocating. Lower-tier cadets in the front rows gasped, clutching their chests as they struggled to breathe.

"Chen Xi..." Sylphe’s voice dropped to a terrified whisper. "His bio-etheric output is unreadable. He is bending the localized gravity field just by standing there. That is Elder Vane. A true Transcendent."

The Ironfang Patriarch stepped to the edge of the VIP balcony. He didn't use a microphone. He didn't need to. Elder Vane simply waved his hand, and a pulse of Transcendent Qi amplified the Patriarch's voice so it echoed like thunder in the minds of everyone present.

"My son, Zhao Ming, was murdered on these grounds," the Patriarch’s voice boomed, dripping with venom. "Your Academy proctors called it an accident. Your investigators called it a wild beast. I call it a pathetic, insulting lie."

He glared down at the thousands of students.

"No one leaves this campus. All outbound flights are grounded. All external communications are severed," the Patriarch declared. "Elder Vane will personally interrogate every Elite, every instructor, and every rat hiding in the shadows of this Academy until I find the person responsible. If you resist, you will be considered an accomplice and executed on the spot."

The heavy blast doors of the arena slammed shut. The emergency lockdown sirens began to wail, a high-pitched scream that signaled the end of the Academy's sovereignty.

Down in the dark tunnel, Chen Xi didn't flinch. He didn't panic.

Through his Machine Dominion, he could feel the massive, terrifying presence of the Transcendent master above him. It was an ocean of power. But Chen Xi also felt the cold, hard logic of the twelve-foot Asura Frame waiting silently in the flooded cavern miles below.

He turned his back on the panic of the arena and walked deeper into the shadows of the Academy.

"They locked the doors to keep us from escaping," Chen Xi whispered to Sylphe, a chilling, predatory smile touching his lips. "They don't realize they just locked themselves in the cage with us."
