Amara’s POV

The bitter night wind cut through the thin walls of our cramped dwelling, and I couldn’t stand the thought of Flint enduring this cold while keeping watch outside.

“You’re not going to freeze out there on my watch,” I told him firmly, stepping aside to let him enter.Full novel: Claimed by His Blood Rival, Rejected by My Mate — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“I appreciate that more than you know.” His crimson eyes drifted to the heavy tome in my hands.

“Is that the clan’s historical archives?”

“Yes, I managed to borrow it from the main estate earlier.

It looked intriguing, so I thought I’d examine it tonight.” I settled back onto our threadbare sofa, making space for him to sit.

“I’ve been wanting to study that for ages,” he admitted, taking a seat beside me with the fluid grace typical of our kind.

A question had been troubling me since I’d begun reading.

“Have you ever encountered anything about some sort of ancient pact between vampire clans and other supernatural beings?”

His eyebrows raised in surprise.

“You mean the old legends?

Most of our kind dismiss those as mere folklore.

Nothing more than tales to frighten fledglings.”

“That’s exactly what Lord Killian believes as well.

That’s what drives him to investigate further and uncover the truth.” I flipped through several yellowed pages, searching for more references to these mysterious agreements.

“Really?” Flint leaned forward, clearly fascinated.

“May I ask you something rather personal?”

“Of course.” I closed the ancient volume, giving him my complete attention.

“Do you ever feel utterly alone in all of this?

Like you’re completely isolated from everything that should matter?”

The question struck deeper than I’d expected.

“I felt that way constantly for a long time.

Now it’s simply become my existence.”

“Everyone in the clan knows your sire died defending the former Lord.

And then the new ruling family simply cast you and your human mother aside completely.” His voice carried genuine sympathy that few dared express openly.

I shrugged, attempting to keep my emotions controlled.

“Fate deals its hand.

That’s simply how things unfolded.”

“But it shouldn’t be this way.

I had genuinely hoped Lord Killian would shatter the old patterns, be different from his predecessor.

It appears he’s forged from the same cold metal.”

“He was shaped by generations of tradition.

This behavior seems natural to him because it’s all he’s ever witnessed.

“You’re remarkably forgiving for someone who’s suffered such treatment,” Flint observed.

“Trust me, forgiveness isn’t my natural response here.

If I could gather what little we possess and flee this territory tomorrow night, I’d vanish without a backward glance.

But I seriously doubt he’d permit that to happen.” The frustration in my voice was impossible to mask.

“Absolutely not.

Especially not with him ordering me to monitor your movements constantly.” Flint rose and stretched with predatory grace.

“Do you mind if I check your kitchen?

The hunger is becoming rather intense.”

“Help yourself to whatever blood stores we have.” I watched as he searched through our meager supplies, though he was thoughtful enough to warm something for me as well.

“Can I ask why you haven’t informed your mother about being bound as the Lord’s blood mate?” he asked while handing me a glass of warmed crimson liquid.

“Because I have no idea how she’ll react.

His sire is directly responsible for our current circumstances.

Learning that I’m bound to his progeny might not be received well.” I took a small sip, my appetite diminished by the weight of our conversation.

“You truly protect her from harsh realities,” he noted with approval.

“Only when she’s actually here.

Last time I counted, she was working four different positions to keep us fed.

Could be more by now.” The reality of our financial struggles was a constant shadow over our lives.

“I’m not the only clan member who believes you’ve been dealt an exceptionally cruel hand,” Flint said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.

“I know there are others who share that sentiment.

But none are brave enough to challenge the Lord’s absolute authority.” I returned to the historical records, hoping to lose myself in something other than my current predicament.

Flint remained inside until mother returned from her night shift.

We both understood that explaining his presence would unleash complications neither of us was prepared to handle.

I wasn’t ready to reveal my mated status to mother, at least not under these circumstances.

When she finally walked through our door, exhaustion etched across her mortal features, I had her evening meal prepared and waiting.

“Here, I collected the mail during my return,” she said, dropping a stack of envelopes onto our small table with weary hands.

I sorted through the pile, my heart racing when I discovered several letters addressed specifically to me.

All from universities I’d submitted applications to some time earlier, before my world had shifted so dramatically.

“What do they contain?” Mother asked eagerly, watching me tear open the first envelope with trembling fingers.

“Darling, that’s absolutely wonderful news!” Her face illuminated with genuine pride and excitement, a brightness I hadn’t seen in far too long.

“I’ll still need to secure employment to cover living expenses and other necessities.

These scholarships only address tuition costs,” I reminded her, trying to manage both our expectations realistically.

“I understand that completely.

But you’re capable of handling whatever challenges arise.

You’re the strongest person I’ve ever known.” Her unwavering faith in me was both touching and overwhelming, a reminder of why I fought so hard to protect her.

“I could easily say the same about you,” I replied, meaning every word with complete sincerity.

Later that night, after we’d both retreated to our respective chambers, I was beginning to drift toward sleep when piercing alarms shattered the peaceful silence throughout the clan territory.

The sound was unmistakable – our warning system indicating we were under siege.

I bolted upright immediately, recognizing the alert that signaled rogue vampires were attacking.

Our location in the remote forest made us particularly vulnerable since patrol coverage was minimal in this sector.

Mother burst from her bedroom just as Flint came crashing through our front entrance, his fangs already extended and eyes blazing with bloodlust.

“Rogues?” I asked, though I already knew the answer from his expression.

“Yes, and they’re advancing rapidly,” he confirmed grimly, his voice tight with controlled aggression.

“Why is he here?” Mother demanded, confusion and concern mixing in her tired voice as she stared at Flint’s obvious vampiric features.

“Questions must wait, mother.

We need to move immediately,” I said, grasping her hand firmly while scanning for potential escape routes.

We were heading toward the door when it swung open from the outside without warning.

A figure stepped into our humble dwelling, and the putrid stench of decay and madness that accompanied him left no doubt about what he’d become.

Even in his humanoid form, we could all sense the corrupted, rogue vampire lurking beneath the surface – one whose sanity had long since been devoured by bloodlust.

His predatory gaze swept over all three of us before settling on my mother with disturbing, intimate recognition.

He ran his tongue slowly across his fangs in a gesture that made my skin crawl.

“Hello there, sweet Sylvia,” he said with sickening familiarity, his voice carrying the weight of buried history.

I turned to stare at mother, whose face had drained of all remaining color.

“Fang,” she whispered, shock and unmistakable recognition clear in her trembling voice.
