143 Chapter 143: Thought pretending to be crazy and foolish could get you off the hook?
"Feeling gloomy but still going out to play mahjong every now and then? Aunt's way of relieving distress sure is unique," Ji Wei mocked.
Ji Shanshan's face stiffened as she defended, "Sis, that's just my mom's only hobby. I can't always stop her, can I?"
Ji Yunli looked at Ji Yunxiang's worn-out appearance and couldn't bear it anymore. He waved his hand gently, "Shanshan, take your mom back to the other house to rest for now."
"Thank you, Uncle."
Ji Shanshan secretly celebrated and quickly supported Ji Yunxiang, guiding her out.
As she passed by Ji Wei, she shot her a sharp, piercing look.
"Stop right there!"
The mother and daughter hadn't even stepped out of the living room when Ji Wei's loud voice stopped them abruptly.
"Let me see the medicine in your hand," Ji Wei said coldly, extending a hand toward Ji Shanshan.
Ji Shanshan instinctively resisted, "Even if I showed it to you, you wouldn't understand. It's just antidepressant medication—what's there to look at?"
"Looking at it won't hurt, will it? What are you so guilty about?" Ji Wei's lips curled into an increasingly icy smile.
"Shanshan, who told you to give me medicine? Didn't I say I don't need it? I'm not sick, I don't want medication! Give it to me!"
Suddenly, Ji Yunxiang, who had been silent all along, snapped. She grabbed the medicine from Ji Shanshan's hand like a madwoman and dashed out of the living room.
Ji Shanshan froze for a moment, her expression stiff, before she quickly followed outside. "Mom, slow down! Be careful not to fall!"
Ji Wei watched the two of them flee in panic, her eyes filled with cold amusement.
Ji Yunxiang doesn't have depression—it's more like she's mentally ill! Does she think she can fake insanity and get away with it? She clearly underestimates both me and Gu Moqian.
At that moment, Ji Yunli's gaze fell on Gu Moqian, carrying a hint of guilt. "Mr. Gu, perhaps I misunderstood you earlier. Let me apologize for that. Since you and Little Wei rarely visit, please stay for lunch. I've got some work to attend to at the company, though."
As he was still Ji Yunli's father-in-law, Gu Moqian decided to cut Ji Yunli some slack for Ji Wei's sake, nodding faintly to show his understanding.
Only then did Ji Yunli breathe a sigh of relief and smile, patting Ji Wei on the shoulder in a fatherly manner as he passed her, "You're still recovering; take care of yourself. I'll look into the matter with your aunt tonight when I return and give you an explanation."
Once Ji Yunli left, Ji Wei was swiftly pulled into Gu Moqian's arms.
"Why did you charge in here so recklessly? Don't you care about your health?" Gu Moqian sounded reproachful, though his gaze was filled with gentle warmth.
"I was worried something might happen to the Ji Family. I didn't think much about it," Ji Wei replied.
Seeing her somewhat pale face, Gu Moqian's heart softened. Unable to keep reprimanding her, he bent down and lifted her gently into his arms, heading straight upstairs to the bedroom.
Ji Wei instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck.
Gu Moqian set her down softly on the bed, removed her shoes, and pulled the covers over her. "Rest well. Your complexion doesn't look good; don't force yourself to get up."
He recalled pulling Ji Wei from the icy waters of the lake last night. It was already fortunate she hadn't caught a cold. For now, she should just rest and recuperate—only then could he feel somewhat reassured.
"What about you?" Ji Wei held onto his hand tightly, refusing to let go.
"I'll stay right here with you."
Gu Moqian tightened his grip on her hand, soothing her.
"By the way, weren't you in Japan for a business trip yesterday? How did you manage to find me so suddenly?" Ji Wei still felt a lingering fear as she thought about last night's storm.
"Thankfully, my flight was delayed, so I caught the message Ling Ling sent me just in time."
"Did the business collaboration in Japan get delayed because of this?"
"It's fine. Chen Ke has already communicated with the corporation over there. I'll head back in two weeks."
"That's good, then."
Ji Wei nodded in relief and let out a breath.
"Sleep now. Don't overthink." Gu Moqian coaxed her gently, reaching out to ruffle the top of her head.
Ji Wei closed her eyes briefly, but images of the scene in the living room earlier kept playing in her mind, making it hard for her to relax enough to sleep.
Noticing that she suddenly opened her eyes again, her clear and dark pupils fixed on him, Gu Moqian couldn't help but let out a chuckle, "What is it? Can't bear to close your eyes?"
