Gordon felt as if the sky had suddenly gone dark.

He couldn’t afford to be hunted down by Falcone.

For a moment, he even considered calling his girlfriend, Barbara, right away to pack their bags and flee.Full novel: Conquering the Multiverse: Starting as the King of Gotham — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“Don’t worry, he’ll just pretend to hunt you down, just for show.”

Gordon finally breathed a sigh of relief.

He lightly punched Rex in the shoulder.

“Damn it, couldn’t you have said that all in one breath?”

This rapid succession of emotional highs and lows actually made him feel a bit closer to Rex.

“This is a plan.

You don’t need to know too much.”

“But it’s also beneficial to you; it clears you of the suspicion of murder.”

In reality, it was more than just that.

The greatest benefit Gordon received was protecting his girlfriend, Barbara.

According to the original plot, Gordon pretended to kill the Penguin while under Bullock’s surveillance, but there were other witnesses present.

Detectives Montoya and Allen from the Major Crimes Unit suspected Gordon of being a dirty cop and continuously investigated him, eventually finding a witness.

Just as they were about to arrest Gordon, the Penguin suddenly appeared, saving Gordon from prison.

At the same time, however, a feeling-deceived Falcone ordered Victor Zsasz, a bald hotshot and ace hitman, to hunt Gordon down.

During her attempt to flee Gotham, Barbara was so terrified by Zsasz that she developed psychological trauma and ended up leaving Gordon to run into Montoya’s arms.

Later, when Barbara calmed down and wanted to return to Gordon, she discovered that her ex-boyfriend had already moved on with Dr.

Thompkins.

Devastated, Barbara began to let herself go.

She was subsequently taken advantage of by a serial killer nicknamed “The Ogre” and eventually completely lost control, murdering her own parents and becoming another major villain in Gotham.

When Gordon was hunted down to a dead end, he even kidnapped the mayor to infiltrate Falcone’s home.

If Barbara hadn’t been captured, Gordon might have even achieved the monumental feat of arresting the heads of both the Gotham police force and the underworld simultaneously.

Now that Gordon and Falcone didn’t have to tear everything apart, Barbara wouldn’t leave Gordon because of it.

In a way, Gordon really had to thank Rex.

“Before Falcone hunts you down, Maroni will come looking for you in the next few days.”

“Maroni too?” Gordon’s slow brain was struggling to keep up.

“Yes. This chapter was copied from g.com without permission.

He’ll ask you about your relationship with the Penguin.

All you have to do is say that when you shot the Penguin, you deliberately missed.”

Although the Penguin had successfully infiltrated the Maroni family, to become a core member, he had to reveal his true identity.

When that time came, Maroni would definitely seek out the other key figure in the incident, Gordon, to verify the story.

Therefore, Rex coached Gordon on his story in advance and gave him some instructions on what to look out for during the fake pursuit before finally letting the dizzy Gordon leave.

Having arranged the actor Gordon’s part, Rex leisurely walked back into the house, only to find Alfred waiting for him with a tray of food the moment he walked through the door.

“Come and taste this.

I just learned how to make waffles.” Alfred looked slightly excited.

Rex had no choice but to force a smile and stiffly accept it.

Alfred’s waffles were considered unpalatable even by the future Robins.

It was hard to imagine just how terrible the waffles made by an Alfred who had only just learned the skill would taste.

If he had known earlier, he would have strolled around outside with Gordon for a bit longer.

“Is everything going smoothly?” Alfred asked, referring to Rex’s path into the mob.

“We’re on the right track.

What’s wrong, Alfred?” Rex naturally set the waffle down as he spoke.

“I thought you weren’t interested in the mob?”

“I am not.

But Master Bruce has been studying Wayne Enterprises’ equity and discovered that Wayne Enterprises holds shares in many mobs.”

“The young master suspects that some high-level executives within the company are engaged in criminal activities,” Alfred explained.

“Rex, do you know anything about this?”

Rex certainly did.

The current Wayne Enterprises was arguably the largest criminal syndicate in Gotham.

Its upper echelons were filled with people from various factions: the Court of Owls, the mob, speculators—it was as leaky as a sieve.

That was why, when Bruce grew up, it took him a tremendous amount of effort to clean up Wayne Enterprises.

“Perhaps you could look at it from a different angle,” Rex suggested after pondering for a moment.

“What angle?”

“You could suspect exactly how many high-level executives in Wayne Enterprises are not engaged in criminal activities.”

“Uh…

wow.”

Even though Alfred had been mentally prepared, he couldn’t help but gasp in surprise.

“Speaking of Wayne Enterprises, you two are attending a gala in a few days, right?” Enjoying the story? Read on at g.com.

“Yes, many high-level executives from the group will be there.”

Rex suddenly remembered that a terrorist attack would occur at this banquet.

To draw Gotham’s attention to the illegal activities of WellZyn, a pharmaceutical company under Wayne Enterprises, a biologist planned to release a toxin into the air, aiming to kill a group of prominent Gotham figures.

Another incident similar to the Balloonman.

This was also a unique sight in Gotham: officials were busy making money, capitalists were busy exploiting people, and criminals were busy saving the city.

“Get me an entry pass, and remember, don’t leave Bruce’s side for even a second during the event,” Rex instructed.

“Is something going to happen?” Hearing that it concerned the young master, Alfred instantly tensed up.

“Another Balloonman, though not specifically targeting Bruce.”

“But it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

“Should I tell the young master not to attend?” Alfred wanted to nip the danger in the bud.

“That won’t be necessary.

Bruce seems very eager to meet the people from Wayne Enterprises at the banquet.”

“I’ll be there too.

Bruce won’t be in any danger.”

Rex was mysterious, but regarding his attitude towards Bruce, Alfred had never doubted him, which was also why he felt close to Rex.

So, since Rex said so, Alfred didn’t insist.

On the other side, Maroni was also plagued by distress.

He had to react to his restaurant being robbed; otherwise, wouldn’t it seem like he was afraid of Falcone?

Maroni planned to rob Falcone’s casino, but his second-in-command, Frankie, was clearly somewhat fearful of Falcone.

Moreover, the casino was too heavily guarded, leaving Maroni with no opportunity.

Just as they were planning to forcefully attack the casino, the little Penguin seized the moment, stating that he knew someone inside the casino and could find an opportunity to sneak in.

Curious, Maroni asked the Penguin to sit down and talk.

After promoting the Penguin to restaurant manager, he hadn’t paid any attention to the nobody since.

The Penguin excitedly sat next to Maroni and began to recount his background.

He first laid out a long, deliberately mystifying preamble, and then confessed that he used to work for Fish Mooney.

In his mind, Maroni should be extremely surprised and would heavily rely on him from then on.

As he wished, Maroni did indeed appear surprised.

Then, the very next second, Maroni happily slammed the Penguin’s face onto the table.
