The office doors slowly began to open, Amelia forgot how to breathe, everything inside her chest tightened painfully, no please, No.

The gap widened, a security guard appeared first then another and between them, Sophia, Amelia’s heart nearly broke into pieces.

“Sophia!” She moved without thinking.Full novel: Contract Marriage For Revenge — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Fast and desperate, but Damien’s hand touched her arm lightly.

Not stopping her.

Just steadying her.

Sophia looked exhausted, her hair was messy, her eyes were swollen red from crying.

Dark marks stained her wrists where restraints had rubbed against her skin.

The sight made Amelia sick, pure rage rushed through her whole body.

Sophia’s shaking eyes immediately found her.

“Amelia.” Her voice cracked, that simple sound nearly destroyed Amelia, then Sophia started crying again, not loudly, just quietly.

The kind of crying that comes after too much fear.

Too much exhaustion.

Amelia crossed the room right away, this time nobody stopped her, not Richard, not Victor and Not the guards.

She wrapped her arms around Sophia tightly.

Sophia clung to her like someone drowning.

“Oh God.” Amelia’s voice shook.

“I’m so sorry.”

Sophia buried her face against Amelia’s shoulder.

“I’m sorry too.” Amelia frowned.

“What are you apologizing for?”

Sophia pulled back slightly.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I should have been more careful.” Amelia shook her head right away.

“No.” Her voice turned firm.

“No, none of this is your fault.”

Sophia looked broken and terrified, Amelia hated seeing her like this, Because Sophia had always been the brave one, the one making jokes, the one pulling Amelia through her worst days.

Now she looked shattered and Amelia knew exactly who caused it.

slowly very slowly she turned toward Richard.

The room instantly became colder.

Richard stood near his desk, his face was impossible to read, like none of this bothered him, like kidnapping someone was just another business meeting.

Amelia stared at him for several seconds.

She couldn’t speak.

Words weren’t enough.

Nothing felt enough.

Then finally “You did this.” Richard stayed calm.

“I protected my family.” The answer hit her like a slap, Sophia flinched beside her.

Amelia laughed, a sharp, disbelieving laugh.

“Protected?” Her voice rose.

“You kidnapped her.”

Richard folded his arms.

“Careful with your accusations.”

The calmness in his voice only made it worse.

Amelia took a step forward, then another, years ago she would have been afraid, years ago she would have backed down, not tonight and Not anymore.

“You terrified her,” Richard said nothing, “you used her.”

Silence.

“You hurt her.” Still silence.

Something inside Amelia finally snapped, the last piece, the final thread connecting daughter and father.

Gone, her eyes filled with tears.

Not sad tears.

Angry ones.

“You don’t even feel guilty.” Richard’s jaw tightened slightly, but not enough, not nearly enough.

Damien watched quietly from the side.

His expression had turned dangerous again.

Cold, controlled and Waiting.

“Everything I did was necessary.”Amelia stared.

Necessary.

The word echoed through her head.

Necessary?

Like Sophia’s fear was a business strategy.

Necessary?

Like her pain was acceptable damage on the side.

Necessary?

Like human beings meant nothing.

Sophia’s hand trembled inside Amelia’s, Richard noticed and somehow he looked annoyed.

Annoyed, not ashamed, Not regretful.

Amelia suddenly understood something terrifying.

Her father truly believed he was right.

That realization scared her more than his anger ever had.

Victor cleared his throat uneasily.

“Father”

Richard ignored him, his eyes stayed locked on Amelia.

“Come home.”Amelia blinked.

“What?” Richard’s voice softened slightly, too suddenly and too smoothly.

The familiar manipulation returned.

“Come home.”Amelia almost laughed.

The timing was unbelievable, the board had suspended him.

The media was turning.

His control was slipping.

And now suddenly he wanted his daughter back.

Not because he missed her.

Because he needed her.

Amelia saw it clearly now for the first time, Crystal clear, Richard took a step forward.

“We can still fix this.” Sophia squeezed Amelia’s hand harder, Fear flashed across her face.

Amelia felt it.

Richard continued.

“You leave Damien.” Silence.

“We handle this privately.” Silence.

“You return where you belong.”

The office became very quiet, Then Damien laughed softly, not amused and Dangerous.

Richard’s eyes immediately hardened.

Damien stepped forward, Slow and confident.

The room seemed smaller when he moved.

“You still don’t understand.” Richard stared at him.

Damien stopped beside Amelia.

Close enough that his shoulder nearly brushed hers.

“She doesn’t belong to you.” The sentence landed like a weight, Richard’s face darkened.

“I am her father.” Damien’s eyes turned cold, “And that’s exactly the problem.”

Victor stepped forward immediately.

“Enough.”

Nobody looked at him, nobody cared.

Years of pain were finally surfacing, years of lies, Years of control, nothing could stop it now.

Amelia slowly let go of Sophia’s hand then looked directly at Richard.

Her father, the man she had spent her whole life trying to please, the man she once admired, the man standing in front of her now felt like a stranger.

“I used to think something was wrong with me.” The room went silent.

Richard frowned, Amelia swallowed hard.

“I thought I wasn’t smart enough.” Silence.

“I thought I wasn’t strong enough.” Her voice shook slightly, “I thought if I worked harder,” Tears filled her eyes.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

For the first time.

Actually uncomfortable.

Amelia noticed immediately, so did Damien, so did Victor and so did Sophia.

Nobody interrupted and nobody moved.

The moment belonged to her.

“You know what hurts the most?”

Richard stayed silent, Amelia smiled sadly.

“It’s not losing the company.” Her voice cracked.

“It’s realizing I was chasing something that never existed.”

The words hit harder than shouting ever could.

Richard looked away.

Just briefly.

But Amelia saw it, and somehow that tiny movement gave her the answer she had needed for years.

There was never going to be an apology.

Never going to be understanding.

Never going to be love.

Only control.

Only expectations.

Only conditions.

Amelia wiped her tears away.

Then straightened her shoulders, Slowly and Firmly and Richard noticed.

Because his expression changed immediately.

Something shifted, Something dangerous.

Because for the first time she wasn’t begging anymore, and d people like Richard Laurent needed others to beg, needed others to need them.

Amelia’s voice became steady, “I am not coming home.”

Silence.

“I’m not leaving Damien.” Another silence.

“I’m not giving you control over my life again.”

The room felt frozen, Nobody breathed, Nobody spoke.

Then suddenly, Richard smiled, the smile made Amelia’s stomach turn, because it wasn’t anger and It wasn’t disappointment.

It was calculation, the same smile he wore before destroying people.

Richard reached into his desk drawer.

Damien’s eyes narrowed instantly.

Victor frowned.

“What are you doing?” Richard ignored him.

Slowly, he pulled out a thin black folder.

Amelia felt something cold crawl down her spine, Richard placed the folder on the desk carefully, then looked directly at her.

“You should see this.” Amelia didn’t move, neither did Damien, Richard opened the folder.

One page, then another and then another.

Photographs, documents and evidence.

Amelia couldn’t see clearly from where she stood.

But Damien’s expression changed instantly, his jaw tightened, the room became deadly quiet.

Amelia’s pulse quickened.

“What is it?” Nobody answered.

She looked at Damien.

His face had gone completely still.

That scared her right away, because Damien Vale never looked surprised, never.

“Damien?” Richard smiled slowly, a predator seeing an opening.

Then softly, very softly, he said, “Ask your husband why he’s really interested in this war.”

Amelia’s heart dropped, and for the first time that night She looked at Damien and saw something she had never seen before.

Hesitation.
