The car departed Laurent Group Headquarters.

Amelia looked out the window as the building shrank behind them, smaller, smaller, until it vanished entirely.

Instead she felt emptied, as if something had been scooped right out of her chest.

Damien sat next to her wordlessly, his hand still holding hers, warm and steady and there.

She did not shrink.

Would not.

Sophia sat in the back with her eyes closed, exhaustion finally winning out.

The car crawled along the city streets and Amelia watched everything pass, people walking, cars going, life just going on.

None of them knew what had just happened there in that boardroom.

None of them knew that her father had been disgraced.

None of them knew she had finally, finally, escaped.

Damien’s voice broke the silence.

“You’re trembling.

She looked at her hands.

He was right.

Her fingers trembled against his.

“I didn’t see it.”

His thumb brushed lightly over her knuckles.

“It’s all right.

She laughed a little brokenly.

`Nothing seems right.’ `I know.

“Repeat that.

His eyes met hers.

“Because I do.

Somewhere in her chest the honesty punched, and she turned away fast.

The car pulled onto the familiar street, the gates of the mansion ahead, lights shining through the rain-streaked windows.

REXIT.

Now the word seemed strange.

But not incorrect.

Damien got out first and offered his hand when the car stopped.

She took it and he stepped out and pulled her softly from the car into the cold air.

She inhaled deep.

The rain had stopped, the sky was clearer now, brighter like the storm had finally gone away for good.

Sophia moved in the back seat.

“Are we home?

Sophia smiled faintly.

“Okay.

Staff ran out to guide her in to her room and Amelia watched her friend disappear before turning to Damien.

Now what?

His eyes searched her face.

“Now you rest.” “I can’t.” “Amelia-” “I can’t.

Her voice broke.

“If I stop, I’ll fall apart.”

“Then fall apart,” he said.

“What?”

He reached out and put a gentle hand on her arm.

“You don’t have to be strong now.”

The words struck a nerve.

Tears pricked at her eyes.

Damien”

“You’ve been fighting for years,” he said, his voice softening.

“You can stop tonight.

If I stop, I’ll break.

“Then break.” His eyes held her.

“I’ll help you piece it together.

Finally the tears came and she could not stop them, could not hold them back, years of pain, years of fear, years of pretending, all pouring out at once.

Damien pulled her close, wrapped his arms around her, and she buried her face in his chest, her shoulders shaking, tears soaking his shirt.

She cried like she never cried before.

Not the controlled kind, not the quiet kind, but the kind that came from somewhere deep and broken, from somewhere that had been waiting years to finally let go.

He had her.

“DIDN’T SAY SHIT.

I didn’t push her.

All he did was hold her, his hand moving slowly on her back, soothing, grounding.

She kept crying until there was nothing left, then she pulled away and wiped her face roughly.

“I’m sorry.” “For what?”

He shook his head.

“You’re not breaking down.”

She weakly chuckled.

“Looks like it.

He cupped her chin and turned her face gently toward him.

“You’re improving.”

The words hung in the air between the two of them.

“Damien.

.

.

“I know you are afraid,” he said softly.

“I know you don’t really believe me.

He stopped.

“But I’m not going anywhere.

Her chest burst open.

“Why?”

He smiled a little.

‘Cause you’re worth staying for.

The words hit her like a wave and she looked away first, but his hand stayed on her chin, gentle, patient.

Amelia.

She glanced back.

“The contract, the revenge, none of it matters anymore,” he said.

“You are what matters.

Her heart raced.

“Damien.”

“I’m not asking for anything,” he said, taking a step back.

“I’m only saying what’s true.

“That’s scary.” “I know.”

He reached out for her hand again.

Let’s go inside.

They walked in together and the mansion closed around them like a shield – warm light, soft silence, safety.

Finally, the tension in her shoulders eased and whatever it was she’d been carrying began to fade.

He led her to the living room with the fire lit and dancing softly.

Sophia was already down the hall, sleeping.

Everything seemed quiet.

Calm.

Amelia sat on the couch.

Damien was across from her, not close, but present.

She looked at him.

You knew.

He waited.

“Of my father.

On the murder.

“About everything.” “Yes.” “And you married me anyway?” “Yes.” “Why?”

He leaned forward a little.

“Because when you kissed me — I felt something for the first time in years.

Her chest felt tight.

“What?

He said, “Hope.” The word lay quietly between them.

Years I plotted my revenge.

Years building my empire.

Years of making sure your father would fall down.” He stopped.

“And then you went across the ballroom and everything was different.

Tears welled up again.

“I didn’t mean to fall in love with you.

She couldn’t stop the words before they escaped her.

I was supposed to be using you for revenge. She gave a weak laugh.

“Instead” She looked at him.

Instead I began to trust you.

He stood up slowly and walked over to her, stopping right in front of her.

“You trust me?”

“Slow.

He knelt before her, and took her hands in his.

“I’ll never hurt you,” he said softly and firmly.

“I’ll never control you. Never play you.” Never make you feel small.

His thumbs ran over her knuckles.

You’re not your father’s daughter.

You are not his workmanship.

“You’re not his victim.” Her face was wet with tears.

“You are Miss Amelia Laurent.

And you’re the strongest person I’ve ever known.” “Damien”

“Let me finish,” His voice dropped.

I don’t know what happens after that.

“I don’t know how it finishes.” He held her hands hard.

But I know I want to find out with you.

Her heart pounded, tears spilled down her face as she stared at him, everything she’d ever wanted right before her.

What if I’m not ready?

“Then I shall wait.

She laughed till the tears ran down her face.

Would you wait?

“If I have to, forever. The words were a wrap around her chest, warm and safe and real. Her hand went up to touch his face and his eyes closed for a second at the contact. I don’t know what I’m doing,” she whispered.

“Neither do I,” he said, opening his eyes.

Then we’ll work it out together?”

He smiled.

Actually smiled.

The kind that reached his eyes.

“Together.

She leaned forward, her forehead touching his.

“I’m still scared.” “I know.” “But I’m staying.” “Good,” he said, his voice rough.

And so they sat.

Foreheads touching, breathing together, fire whispering, the world outside forgotten.

For the first time in her life Amelia felt completely secure.

He drew back slowly.

“Stay with me tonight

She blinked.

‘What?’

“Not—” He shook his head and smiled faintly.

Not that way.

Just be yourself.

I will sleep on the couch.

You’d do that?”

“Amelia,” he said softly, “I’d do anything for you.

The words pierced through her remaining defenses.

“All right.

His eyes widened a little.

“Alright.

“Ok.

Together they climbed the stairs, hand in hand, her heart pounding – not with fear this time, but with hope.

They found his room, the door opened into a big bed, dark colors, warm light.

Secure.

He made it for the couch.

“Damien.”

He turned.

“Stay on the bed.

He looked into her eyes.

“Is that so?”

“I know.

He walked back to her slowly.

“Just sleeping?

“Just sleeping.”

He grinned.

‘OK.’

They lay down together, a respectful distance apart, soft but near enough for her to feel his warmth.

She looked up at the ceiling.

A lifetime of pain behind her, and a future of uncertainty in front.

But for once she was not afraid.

Because Damien Vale was with her and that somehow made everything seem possible.

She closed her eyes and for the first time in years slept well.
