Chapter 14: Little Zombie

Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse

As Chen Xing entered the main gate, her lips curled into a wide grin.

She’d bet her life on it: if this man went back on his word, she would kill him.

The ground floor lobby was filled with one restaurant after another. Was this a foodie’s Heaven or what?

The next few floors were also restaurants, and there was even a supermarket... The floors above that were residential. The restaurants on the lower levels were already more than enough, but there was a huge supermarket too?

’He probably has no idea who he just brought in...’

’Someone with a spatial ability, someone who could clear this place out in minutes. Hehe...’

Chen Xing couldn’t have been more delighted.

’What’s the big deal about a pregnant woman? It’s just delivering a baby, right?’

The elevator was behind a closed door. It went straight to the top floor. When the doors opened, a massive living room came into view, as luxurious as a small palace.

In the center of the living room stood a man as beautiful as a flower.

His features were exquisite, and his pink lips had a certain delicate pout.

When he saw Song Yiguo return, he looked like he wanted to throw himself at him. "Can you please not go on dangerous missions like that by yourself next time? If we die, we die together!" Heaven only knew how he’d gotten through the past few minutes.

Song Yiguo nodded. "Didn’t I come back just fine? I even brought a beauty back with me."

Chen Xing: "..." She wasn’t used to the title. It was the first time she’d ever heard someone call her a beauty.

Nicknames like monkey, ape, caveman... she had too many of those to remember.

Hearing Song Yiguo call her a beauty, Yan Junxi shot Chen Xing a sharp, jealous glare. "Since when do you appreciate beauties? Hmph..."

"I don’t even know her name..." Song Yiguo said, sounding a little wronged.

Chen Xing didn’t speak right away. After a moment of silence, she said, "Chen Xing..." In truth, it was a name she had given herself.

After escaping the Research Institute in her past life, she couldn’t remember anything, not even her name.

Once, someone had asked for her name. She happened to look up and see the twinkling stars in the sky, so she’d randomly chosen that name for herself.

"Ah... It hurts..." Just then, the woman in the room began to groan, her cries growing louder and more intense.

"It’s happening, it’s happening! Is she going into labor?" Yan Junxi stomped his foot anxiously.

"Chen Xing, we’re counting on you!" Song Yiguo said bluntly, placing all his hopes on her.

Chen Xing: "..." ’I don’t know anything about this either!’

’In those pre-apocalyptic TV shows, they always said something about boiling water...’

"Boil some water!" Chen Xing said, mimicking what she’d heard.

Then, she walked hesitantly toward the room where the screams were coming from.

Killing zombies didn’t make her hesitate in the slightest, but the thought of delivering a baby made her heart race.

The two men immediately ran to the kitchen, even though they had no idea what she needed the boiling water for.

Just as Chen Xing was about to reach the door to the pregnant woman’s room, the shouting suddenly stopped, and a hush fell over the area.

Hearing the silence, Song Yiguo immediately came out of the kitchen and looked at Chen Xing nervously. "Something hasn’t gone wrong, has it?"

’I don’t know either. Maybe the pain was so bad she passed out?’

She immediately pulled the door open.

It was a large master bedroom. Just inside the door was a row of upholstered sofas. Further in was a large, round bed. By the headboard was a photo of Yan Junxi leaning on Song Yiguo’s shoulder against a backdrop of a white sand beach, blue sky, and ocean water. Coupled with the warm-toned decor, the room gave off a sweet and cozy feeling.

The motionless woman lying on the bed, however, looked completely out of place.

She was lying on her back with her legs bent, a thin blanket covering her swollen belly.

Her hair was soaked with sweat, likely from the prolonged pain, and a large patch of the white pillowcase was damp.

Just then, an uneasy Song Yiguo walked over. "Did she really faint from the pain?"

"She’s dead," Chen Xing stated coldly.

Song Yiguo’s sharp brows furrowed. He didn’t quite believe it. "No way..."

At that very moment, the pregnant woman’s abdomen suddenly moved.

His eyes widened as he pointed at the woman’s belly, too stunned to speak.

Chen Xing, of course, saw it too.

The abdomen had clearly moved, but it was anything but normal.

She didn’t believe a normal pregnant woman’s belly would move like that. It was as if something inside was trying to kick its way out.

Besides, the pregnant woman was already infected with the zombie virus.

Looking closely, the woman’s face was already showing the unique signs of zombification: thin, blue-green veins were spreading across her skin.

Song Yiguo couldn’t see these details. Even if the woman was truly dead, a small life was still struggling inside her belly. "The baby’s still alive! We have to save it..."

"The mother is already infected with the zombie virus. Do you think there’s any hope for the one in her belly?"

Song Yiguo: "..." He clearly still didn’t quite believe it. He walked closer in a daze, wanting to get a better look at the woman’s condition.

After all, they were the ones who had saved her. He didn’t want this to be the end, not when two lives were at stake.

As he drew near, the pregnant woman’s stomach began to move even more violently, as if it sensed approaching prey.

The sight made even Chen Xing feel a wave of unease.

’Good thing there’s a blanket covering it. A bare stomach... just the thought is enough.’

Just as Song Yiguo was about to reach the head of the bed, the dead pregnant woman’s eyes suddenly snapped open.

Her eyes were blood-red, and she stretched out her arms, about to lunge at Song Yiguo.

Chen Xing was faster. In a single motion, her blade pierced its head.

Although Song Yiguo was startled by the pregnant woman suddenly turning into a zombie, he had already jumped back at the first moment, creating a safe distance.

He stood still, an unavoidable sigh escaping him.

He remembered the woman saying she hadn’t been bitten. To think she had lied to them.

As the pregnant woman collapsed, her belly squirmed, even more intensely than before.

Song Yiguo looked away, unable to watch the stomach any longer.

It wasn’t that he didn’t dare, but rather that he couldn’t bear to.

He didn’t know if the thing inside that belly was a small life or a little monster.

"You should go," Chen Xing said, seeing that Song Yiguo was incapable of making a decision.

’I took his payment, so I’ll do the job.’

After Song Yiguo left, Chen Xing didn’t hesitate. She plunged her blade into the pregnant woman’s stomach.

She must have missed its head, because the stomach thrashed even more violently.

She could even see the outline of a small infant under the skin of the belly.

It would have been better not to see the outline. Seeing how grotesque and terrifying it was, Chen Xing pinpointed her target and finished off the little zombie.

’Now I can loot everything in this building with a clear conscience.’

When Chen Xing came out of the room, she saw Song Yiguo and Yan Junxi embracing.

Yan Junxi was probably comforting Song Yiguo.

Seeing Chen Xing emerge, Yan Junxi patted Song Yiguo’s shoulder.

Song Yiguo gave a bashful smile and explained, "I think you’ve probably figured out our relationship..."

Chen Xing maintained her icy expression and didn’t respond.

Her inner thought was, ’What does this have to do with me?’

But in the two men’s eyes, it was a different story.

They felt that Chen Xing didn’t look at them with any judgment, unlike the way the rest of the world did. Their favorable impression of her shot up.

"A helicopter will be here soon to take us to the Capital City. Why don’t you come with us? Hualai City isn’t safe anymore." Song Yiguo was grateful to Chen Xing.

If she hadn’t acted, he didn’t know if he would have had the courage to strike down a pregnant woman.

Although Yan Junxi was also grateful to Chen Xing, his jealousy overcame his gratitude. "Fine, you can take her. I’ll stay behind. The helicopter can’t fit that many people anyway!"
