Seeing Chen Xing look back, the captain unholstered the pistol from his waist and threw it over.
Chen Xing was silent. As she caught the gun, a flicker of hesitation went through her.
’After all, I’m only doing this for myself.’
’But who would turn down a free gun?’
Chen Xing nodded, then continued running.
The two soldiers stopped following Chen Xing, turning at an intersection and running in a different direction.
Having successfully split from the soldiers, Chen Xing rounded a corner and ran back toward the gas station.
Along the way, she peeked into her pocket dimension. In addition to the original hollow, two new ones had appeared, and the total area had once again grown exponentially.
’Now I really don’t have to worry about storage. I can just take whatever I want.’
The area around the gas station was quiet, with almost no zombies shuffling around.
After quickly draining all the different types of fuel, Chen Xing spotted the overturned military truck in the distance.
About twenty soldiers who had been bitten were there, now turning one by one.
’I really want to see what’s inside that truck.’
The curiosity was killing her; she couldn’t resist.
She immediately ran over and pulled open the back doors of the truck.
She saw four large, dark green crates overturned inside. Chen Xing guessed they probably contained guns and ammunition.
She decisively stored them in her dimension. As she got out of the truck, she saw the soldiers rising to their feet one by one in grotesque positions.
Chen Xing was just waiting for them to get up so she could take the assault rifles slung over their bodies.
’If I had dealt with them first, I would have had to lift each one to get the guns. What a hassle!’
Chen Xing made a quick pass around them, and soon she had all the assault rifles.
This place was surrounded by tall buildings on three sides; she didn’t want to take the risk.
Carrying the guns on her back, she quickly ducked into a small side alley.
Once she was out of sight, the assault rifles naturally vanished.
This unexpected haul was something that would cost an exorbitant amount of food to trade for in the future.
For people surviving in the apocalypse, food was important, but guns were also very important.
Without a weapon, forget zombies—any random person could get the drop on you.
Even if you had food, sooner or later it would be stolen.
Therefore, sometimes guns were more useful than food.
There was nothing left worth scavenging in this area. She quickly ran toward the hospital several kilometers away.
There were medicines in the hospital and many pharmacies outside as well.
This trip went quite smoothly. She didn’t encounter any large hordes of zombies, managed to collect a lot of medicine, and even unexpectedly found a purified water plant, harvesting a huge supply of water.
For at least the next ten-plus years, she wouldn’t have to worry about water.
It was almost noon. Chen Xing looked around.
She had wanted to find a quiet, safe place to eat, but then she caught sight of a helicopter propeller on a tall building, looking as if it were embedded in it. The signs of impact around it were obvious.
She was speechless. ’I don’t want to get involved. I hate getting involved!’
’But... if I can find Song Yiguo and save him, maybe I can trade his rescue for something?’
She’d already guessed he wasn’t just some nobody, and after speaking with his assistant, she was even more certain his status was extraordinary.
She had heard about the National Capital Safety Zone in her past life. It was hidden and secure; not even your average millionaire could get in.
There were countless capable people across the country, but very few could enter the National Capital Safety Zone. Those who could get their entire families in could be counted on one hand.
Chen Xing immediately bypassed the zombies below the tall building and entered through an open window on the second floor.
The moment she got in, she nearly jumped right onto a zombie’s face.
Luckily, the zombie hadn’t reacted yet before she took it down.
’Looks like this building is full of zombies...’
’I can’t let my guard down!’
Chen Xing focused her attention, searching floor by floor.
This was a medium-sized residential building, and just as she thought, there were a lot of zombies, with some on every floor.
To avoid attracting the zombies outside, she was completely silent, not giving the zombies a chance to roar and attract more of their kind.
Soon, she reached the top floor.
There were six apartments on the top floor, and every door was locked tight.
’I’ll give up if I can’t find Song Yiguo here.’
She pushed open the doors one by one. Three apartments were intact; the remaining three were destroyed by the helicopter crash.
’I’ve done my best, and I’m starving!’
There was no one here, which meant the two of them had probably died up above. If they were dead, there was no need for her to rush, so she decided to eat first.
Chen Xing chose a relatively clean dining table and took out several semi-prepared dishes from her dimension.
The natural gas was still working. She turned it on and began to heat the food.
Before long, a fragrant aroma wafted through the hallway.
Time to eat!
Four dishes and a soup, a large bowl of rice. In front of her was her phone, recording a video.
Chen Xing picked up her chopsticks and began shoveling food into her mouth.
The whole table of food was gone in the blink of an eye.
Just then, a very faint clattering sound caught her attention.
’That sound came from somewhere nearby!’
Chen Xing put down her chopsticks. A knife instantly appeared in her hand, and she pressed herself against the wall by the door.
Very cautious footsteps came from outside the door. The person seemed very scared, pausing from time to time.
Chen Xing waited calmly.
The door to the apartment was open, so it was easy for someone to spot her.
The footsteps reached the doorway and paused again.
Chen Xing was ready to strike at any moment.
The person at the door probably thought it was safe since there were no zombies and walked in openly.
Just as he stepped inside, he felt a cold sensation on his neck and immediately opened his mouth to scream.
Chen Xing clapped a hand over his mouth and pinned him against the doorframe. "It’s me!"
The newcomer was none other than Yan Junxi, who had disappeared with Song Yiguo.
His face was no longer as radiant as when she first met him. It was black and blue, making him look haggard and disheveled.
Seeing it was Chen Xing, Yan Junxi let out a huge sigh of relief and pushed her away.
He rubbed his slightly sore neck, where a very faint bloody line had appeared.
Yan Junxi was speechless, breaking out in a cold sweat.
’Did I almost just die?’
"You tried to kill me..." He immediately ran to a mirror. Only after seeing the cut was so small it was barely visible did he glare at her, relieved.
He knew she didn’t do it on purpose, but he was still angry.
"Where’s Song Yiguo?" Chen Xing didn’t explain, asking a question in return.
’Good thing I recognized him in time. Otherwise, one slash from my knife would have left more than just a little scratch.’
’If Yan Junxi is okay, Song Yiguo should be mostly fine, right?’
’But Yan Junxi is the one out scouting, so Song Yiguo must be immobilized.’
Yan Junxi shot Chen Xing an annoyed glare. "Upstairs... He’s injured!" He just saw her as a threat.
’How dare she ask about the man I love right to my face?’
A fresh wave of jealousy washed over him.
"The helicopter pilot turned?"
Although Yan Junxi really didn’t want to talk to Chen Xing, he still nodded. "We hadn’t even left Hualai City airspace when he suddenly turned and tried to bite us. Thankfully, Yiguo acted without hesitation and threw him out, but... the helicopter spun out of control and crashed into this building. Yiguo’s leg was crushed against a wall when he shielded me..." As he spoke, his eyes grew moist.
’Why is he crying?’ Chen Xing wondered. ’He’s not the one who got hurt. Shouldn’t he be happy?’
But she had to admit, those two were incredibly lucky to have survived a helicopter crash.
"Take me to him..." ’Now that I’ve found Song Yiguo, it’s time to make a deal.’
