Chapter 4: Taking Over the Supermarket

Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse

After it finished biting the person, the zombie’s target shifted to Chen Xing.

Chen Xing had already taken the opportunity to survey her surroundings. Her position wasn’t far from the kitchenware, and she immediately ran toward it.

The knives were behind a glass case with a lock on it.

Chen Xing smashed it with a punch, grabbed a knife, and spun around to strike.

The strike was incredibly precise, piercing straight through the zombie’s temple.

The next zombie rushed in, arms outstretched, lunging for Chen Xing. She threw the knife, and it embedded itself squarely in its forehead.

Taking advantage of the brief lull, Chen Xing grabbed two more knives, holding one tightly in each hand.

She wasn’t in a hurry to grab supplies. Since this place was already occupied, it was best to wait until everyone was dealt with before taking anything.

She was even less inclined to kill all the zombies right away. Doing so would mean she’d have to deal with the humans herself—though killing people wasn’t difficult for her.

She deliberately led the zombies toward the down escalator.

She made her way to the third floor. At a glance, she saw a dazzling array of food that made her swallow hard. It would be a crime against herself not to collect the goods here.

’I wonder if my space can hold it all?’

After searching for a long time, she finally saw a door. It led to the supermarket’s stockroom.

Chen Xing walked up and pulled, and the door opened.

At that moment, the zombies behind her caught up.

To make the people inside lower their guard, she deliberately made a lot of noise as she ran in.

SLAM! As the stockroom door was shut from the outside, she also noticed the zombies trapped inside with her.

She had been wondering where everyone went. A supermarket in the middle of the afternoon should have been crowded.

It didn’t take a genius to figure it out. The manager must have locked all the newly turned zombies in here.

’What method did he use?’

’He must have used a living person as bait to lure the zombies in before shutting the door from the outside.’

’The manager’s threat to lock me up probably meant locking me in here, too.’

But she had to admit, the manager did have some brains.

It’s just...

"That damn girl tried to lead the monsters to me. Let’s see how you die now!" The manager’s arrogant and triumphant voice came from outside.

He had seen her methods for killing monsters; she was definitely no amateur. ’Too bad... with so many monsters in there, what good is being strong?’

Chen Xing sized up the zombies. There weren’t too many, maybe a hundred or so. Gripping a knife in each hand, she began the slaughter.

Halfway through the fight, she heard a bloodcurdling scream from outside. The tense expression on Chen Xing’s face finally relaxed a little.

She had been worried about this exact possibility, which was why she’d deliberately left two of the bitten people alone.

Her stamina was surprisingly good. Killing a hundred-odd zombies didn’t take much effort.

Once it was quiet inside, she looked up, found the security camera, and destroyed it.

She boldly began collecting supplies. Naturally, she wouldn’t miss the Crystal Cores.

After she had collected everything, she spotted a faucet next to the workstation for handling cold-chain foods.

’Even though there isn’t much room left in my space, water is a precious resource. I’m afraid it’ll be impossible to find later on.’

She immediately turned on the faucet and began filling her space with water.

The long stream of water looked slow, but as it passed through her hand, it almost instantly filled the recently emptied depression in her space.

Just like that, her space was out of room again.

Chen Xing was incredibly satisfied.

She would never again have to live in constant fear of running out of food and water every few days, like in her past life.

She glanced around the warehouse. There was nothing left worth taking, so she headed for the exit.

It was a heavy iron door.

Right now, she was brimming with strength. Even after killing so many zombies, she didn’t feel the slightest bit tired and felt an urge to release some of that energy.

So she punched the heavy iron door, and it immediately caved in.

This confidence was precisely why she had dared to run into the warehouse without any precautions.

The power of her right fist was incredible even without a superpower. Otherwise, she never would have been captured by the Research Institute.

The punch startled the zombies outside, and they began gathering at the iron door, ramming against it.

Chen Xing raised her fist for a second punch, but before she could throw it, she felt her body freeze again.

’...’ ’I just leveled up, and now I’m leveling up again?’

’This leveling speed is a bit fast, huh!’

’Could it be that the space automatically upgrades when it’s full?’

’Does it have to be so smart?’

However, she needed more space for supplies, so she thought the upgrade was great.

「Five minutes later」

Chen Xing found she could move again.

Without a second thought, she ran back to the faucet and continued filling her space with water.

Only when the depression was full did she reluctantly walk back to the iron door. With a single punch, Chen Xing bashed the door in until it was a warped mess.

The zombies slammed against the iron door from the other side with all their might.

With another punch, she sent the heavy iron door flying.

Just as she thought, her fist was still just as powerful. Combined with the strength granted by her space, it was no weaker than it had been ten years into her past life.

A zombie was pinned under the iron door, unable to move. It was the manager.

Chen Xing first dealt with two zombies lunging at her, then walked over and finished off the manager-zombie.

Looking out, the vast shopping mall was filled with goods but no people. It was a delightful sight.

She wasn’t in a rush to collect supplies. She destroyed every security camera she passed.

Only when all the cameras were destroyed did she begin to collect supplies with abandon.

She wouldn’t spare a single food item in the entire food section.

Even if it expired, she wasn’t afraid. When you’re seeing stars from hunger, you’ll know that whether food is expired or not isn’t a big deal. Getting even a single bite is better than anything.

Naturally, she didn’t pass up on daily necessities either. Home appliances weren’t very useful, but she would take them for now. She could always toss them later if she ran out of space.

She took all the refrigerators and freezers, then picked out a few top-of-the-line models from the rest.

Once she had cleared both floors, she returned to the food-tasting counter.

’Time to get something to eat!’

She switched on an induction cooker and toasted some bread, grilled some sausages, fried two eggs and a few slices of bacon, drizzled them with condensed milk, salad dressing, and ketchup, then added two pieces of washed lettuce and a few slices of cucumber. Paired with a glass of milk, it was beyond wonderful.

*Burp...* After a satisfying belch, she even helped herself to some ice cream.

A meal like this was something she couldn’t have even dreamed of in her past life.

Sometimes, a single bite of food meant going several days without anything to eat.

’I’ll take this induction cooker and the grill pan. Yep!’

’Now that I have my space, if I can find a generator, I’ll be able to cook whatever I want in the future.’

As she passed through the appliance section one last time, she looked at the remaining appliances, and her hands started to itch.

’Maybe they’ll be useful?’

She checked her space. It was just a little bit away from being full.

’Let’s test if it really does upgrade when it’s full.’

Having convinced herself, she immediately filled her space to the brim.

After a short wait, her body suddenly became immobile again.

So, her theory was correct. As soon as the space was full, it would automatically upgrade.

Moreover, each upgrade not only doubled the size of the space, but her stamina also increased, leaving her feeling full of energy, like she was on steroids.

Inside her space, besides the depression for storing water, two new, larger depressions had appeared.

In any case, knowing when she would upgrade was for the best. In the future, when her space was about to fill up, she’d have to quickly find a place to hide and level up.

When she could move again, she noticed that the color of the ring on her hand was much paler than before, and the jade seemed to have shrunk...

’Looting is the priority. I’ll study this in detail later when I have time.’

Walking to the supermarket entrance, she heard that it was very quiet outside.
