What the hell!?
Brother Xiao stared at the glisteningly fat pig for a long moment before finally answering, "It’s a pig!"
Ding Yiyu was speechless. ’Anyone can see it’s a pig!’
"So, what do we do about it?"
Brother Xiao shook his head. "What do we do? You’re not actually thinking of catching it, are you? Come on, let’s find some food. Otherwise, we’ll starve to death before we even get bitten!"
The two of them ignored the fat pig and left the shop.
They could see there was no food on this floor besides the pig.
As tempting as the pig was, they knew the two of them couldn’t possibly catch such a large animal, let alone butcher it.
By this time, Chen Xing had regained her mobility but remained hidden in the cabinet a little longer.
’She was extremely pleased with the pig that had come from her space. She’d discovered it could follow her commands precisely. It looked like they would be useful for confusing enemies in the future.’
Taking advantage of the lull, she entered her space.
The space had doubled in size again. Even the water basin and the low-lying areas had expanded.
’I have to collect as much water as possible before the sources get contaminated.’
After quickly clearing out the supplies on the thirteenth floor, she hurried to the stairwell.
She had originally planned to go straight to the kitchen supply store on the ninth floor, but she couldn’t resist when she saw the clothing store on the eleventh.
’Fighting zombies in the future would mean her clothes would get torn often and easily stained with blood. Just like the white hospital gown she was wearing now, already covered in bloody filth.’
’It’s better to stock up on them.’
’Besides, even if a girl doesn’t need to look gorgeous, she should at least be clean.’
’She wouldn’t be like she was in her past life, just making do with whatever she could get.’
Besides casual wear, this floor also had a sleepwear store.
It was the cusp of summer, so clothes for all four seasons were available, though new summer items were the most plentiful. She wasn’t picky and took it all.
Once she was done, she changed into a pair of slightly loose jeans, a baggy black short-sleeved t-shirt, and a pair of comfortable sneakers.
Standing before a mirror and looking at her own pale face, she felt like she was looking at a stranger.
’How long has it been since I’ve really looked at myself? The last time was years ago. After a few years in the apocalypse, my face was always filthy, shriveled up like a monkey’s.’
’Though my face is still pale, at least I look human now.’
For appearances, she put on a backpack, threw in two bottles of water and a few loaves of bread, and then headed to the ninth floor.
Pots, bowls, ladles, basins, rice cookers, ovens, microwaves, juicers... there was a huge variety of cookware.
’Take it all!’
’From now on, I’m going to make gourmet food for every single meal. I won’t miss a single one. I’m going to make up for all the starvation I endured in my past life.’
In the blink of an eye, two hours had passed. She had intended to leave this building and find the next mall.
But when she saw a directory listing a seafood buffet and several other restaurants, she decided to clean them all out.
Fortunately, they were all on the lower floors and on her way out.
The seafood buffet made her ecstatic.
Several large fish tanks at the entrance were brimming with all sorts of live seafood and freshwater fish.
She took them, tanks and all, into her space.
The buffet stations were loaded with prepared food. There was plenty of seafood, of course, plus barbecue, steak, lamb chops, sashimi... pizza, various fried rices, sushi, pasta, salad... fruit, cake, ice cream... It was an unbelievably lavish spread.
If she weren’t worried about wasting time, she would have loved to sit down and gorge herself. But time was of the essence, so she could only sneak bites as she packed everything away.
In the kitchen, she took everything edible, not even sparing the seasonings. The beverage coolers, refrigerated displays... all the way to the wine cabinet.
There were also two bakeries. Their display cases were filled with freshly made cakes and all kinds of bread, and they had tea powders for making milk tea, as well as coffee and cream.
’If this stuff doesn’t spoil in my space, it’ll be enough to last me a good long while.’
While packing things away, she grabbed a slice of strawberry cream cake and popped it in her mouth.
The creamy flavor and strawberry juices exploded in her mouth, a wave of happiness washing over her as the taste spread all the way to her stomach.
’Sweets are an essential part of life, but I never had the chance to enjoy them in my past life.’
’Besides videos, I did once see Cheng Fang eat cake in person. Back then, it was just sour grapes. I lied to myself, claiming it couldn’t possibly taste good. This one bite proved just how pathetic I was in my past life.’
She grabbed a piece of tiramisu—it was simply divine—and washed it down with some sweet banana milk before contentedly taking everything else.
The bakery’s storeroom was stacked with dozens of bags of fine flour—both bread flour and cake flour—as well as various other powders like milk powder. She emptied it all.
She looted her way down to the last restaurant on the second floor.
It was a Western restaurant with elegant decorations and magnificent furnishings. The food inside was bound to be expensive.
Chen Xing was habitually cautious, and her steps were incredibly light. Even though she’d dealt with the zombies she’d encountered outside, you never knew when one might suddenly pop out and threaten your life.
The main dining hall had nothing but tables and chairs; there was nothing worth taking.
Her target was the kitchen.
’Expensive Western restaurants like this use top-notch ingredients. Even a random cut of meat would be delicious. Of course... I’ve only ever seen that in videos.’
The kitchen was semi-open, with the top half made of transparent glass.
Looking in from the dining hall, she saw a portly man in a white chef’s uniform with his back to her, hunched over a cutting board as if he were chopping something.
’Chen Xing didn’t for a second believe he was actually preparing food.’
’Judging by his clumsy, repetitive arm movements, he had to be a zombie.’
Walking to the doorway, Chen Xing made a noise.
The figure, which had been mindlessly chopping just a moment before, heard the sound and charged at Chen Xing, brandishing a half-meter-long knife.
Its eyes were covered with a gray film, rimmed in red. It had completely turned.
Chen Xing was delighted.
’That knife in the zombie chef’s hand... it’d be perfect for hacking up zombies.’
Of course, dealing with a single zombie was child’s play for her, and the knife naturally became her property.
The building was now more or less completely cleared out by her.
By now, it was starting to get dark outside.
She had originally planned to find a place to hide before dark, since zombies grew twice as strong at night. But scavenging was addictive, and she’d lost track of time.
Luckily, while she was upstairs, she had already picked out her hiding spot for the night: the Walt Hotel, across the street from the Research Institute.
This hotel was something else.
The architecture was palatial, giving it the feel of an imperial palace. It was the kind of place only aristocrats would dare stay in.
’And to think I’d dare to have designs on a place like this... I guess I have this damned apocalypse to thank for it?’
From her current location to the hotel, it was about a five-hundred-meter run.
That five-hundred-meter dash wouldn’t be easy. The zombies would definitely chase her in hordes.
She wasn’t afraid of being chased, but she was worried it would be trouble if all the zombies followed her into the hotel.
Once those things locked onto a target, they pursued it relentlessly. Unless you vanished from their sight, they would never give up.
Reaching the first-floor exit, she leaned against the wall and peered out at the street. There were even more zombies than she had imagined.
Just as she was wondering how she could get to the hotel without being noticed by the zombies, a large truck roared past with its headlights blazing, drawing all of their attention.
