“Fine. I agree.”
Fu Yunchuan agreed readily, then left as soon as he had finished speaking.
The door slammed shut with a bang, and the whole house seemed to tremble with it.
The moment he was gone, Jiang Yin collapsed to the floor, as if her soul had been torn from her.
Sitting there, she couldn’t come back to herself for a long time. Her mind replayed, like scenes from a film, all the little things she had done over the past five years to please Fu Yunchuan, never tiring of it. She had been certain that even if he were a block of ice, one day she would warm him.
It wasn’t until today, when she saw how tenderly and devotedly he loved another woman, that Jiang Yin realized how ridiculous she had been.
If he didn’t love her, he simply didn’t love her. Love wasn’t something that would blossom just because enough time passed.
Late that night.
Jiang Yin hadn’t slept well, but after eating something and getting some rest, she felt much better than when she had first come home.
She was a light sleeper. The phone rang once, and she jolted awake.
The call was from Anyi Sanatorium.
“Miss Jiang, we detected signs that your mother’s vital signs may be returning tonight. She’ll need a special medication. What would you like us to do…?”
Jiang Yin didn’t hesitate. “Give it to her! If it can wake my mother, use it, no matter how expensive it is.”
But when she went to pay, she discovered that the supplementary card Fu Yunchuan had given her had been frozen. At that moment, her heart sank to freezing point.
It had only been a few hours since she brought up divorce, and he was already ruthless enough to freeze the card so quickly.
During their five years of marriage, Fu Yunchuan had paid for his mother’s treatment at the sanatorium, while Jiang Yin had spent nearly all her salary on things for their home, putting her heart into making a home for the two of them.
She had naively thought that buying the things she gave him with her own money would make them seem more sincere and heartfelt. Now, though… she had only managed to put herself in a bind.
There was barely anything left in her account.
Being lovesick and foolish was no good.
She took a deep breath and called Lin Chuyi to borrow some money. At the hospital, Lin Chuyi was the person she was closest to.
Lin Chuyi didn’t ask questions. She transferred the money at once. Jiang Yin had always been proud to the core and had never asked anyone for help at the hospital; if she was calling in the middle of the night to borrow money, she must be in serious trouble.
“Don’t worry about paying me back right away. Just pay me when you’ve gotten through this.”
Jiang Yin’s nose stung. “Chuyi, thank you.”
Jiang Yin arrived at the hospital early the next morning.
As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw Sang He holding Fu Yunchuan’s arm. She was wearing a white dress, looking youthful and pure.
“Brother Yunchuan, is this really all right…?” The young woman looked shy and conflicted. “What if they say I only got the job because of connections?”
Fu Yunchuan glanced at her, his gaze tender and his voice full of affection. “You’re someone I’m protecting. Who would dare say that? You’re pregnant. How could I bear to have you running around, wearing yourself out for work?”
“Besides, I believe you’ll be more than capable.”
The young woman’s face turned as red as if rouge had been brushed all over it. “Oh, honestly…”
The two of them walked farther and farther away, heading toward the offices.
Jiang Yin stood by the elevator, staring blankly at their backs. The sight was unbearably painful.
Their conversation stung, too. The last time she was pregnant, she had been so weak she fainted, and Fu Yunchuan hadn’t even looked at her.
So this was how he looked when he wanted to protect someone, when he loved someone.
Jiang Yin pressed a hand to her lower abdomen and watched them disappear into the distance. The suffocating feeling in her chest seemed to have settled there and wouldn’t disperse; tears gradually blurred her vision.
From what they’d said, Fu Yunchuan had really arranged a job for Sang He at the hospital. What position would she get…?
When Jiang Yin first started at the hospital, she had begun at the very bottom. Her internship had been so exhausting she’d nearly vomited blood, and Fu Yunchuan had only told her she wasn’t capable enough and deserved to suffer. Now he had carefully arranged Sang He’s future, unwilling to let his girl endure even the slightest hardship.
“Director Jiang, what’s wrong?” A nurse passing by greeted her and asked.
Jiang Yin came back to herself in a daze, raised a hand to wipe the moisture from the corner of her eye, and smiled faintly. “I didn’t sleep well last night. My eyes are a little sore.”
“I thought you’d been crying. Director Jiang, you need to get enough rest, too.”
Jiang Yin said, “Mm. Go on, then.”
She took a deep breath and headed toward the offices. The moment she stepped inside, she collided head-on with Fu Yunchuan, who was striding out.
The man’s chest was hard as a board. The impact made Jiang Yin stumble, and she had to catch herself against the door beside her to stay on her feet.
“Hehe is still here. Don’t throw yourself into my arms in front of everyone; she’ll get jealous.”
