The air inside the secret stone vault was cold, damp, and heavy.

The thick rock walls completely blocked out the frantic sounds of the screaming crowds, the barking orders of the guards, and the ringing alarm bells from the palace floors far above us.

Down here, underneath the ancient chapel foundations, the world felt completely frozen.Full novel: CROWN AND LIES — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It felt as if time itself had stopped, leaving the chaos of the burning empire behind.

I sat on the hard wooden bench, shivering slightly as the chill of the underground stone seeped through the layers of my clothing.

I pulled the heavy fabric of my dark blue velvet dress tightly around my legs, trying to trap whatever body heat I had left.

The dress, which had felt like a fierce piece of regal armor during the afternoon council meeting, now felt incredibly cold against my skin.

Above us, a single torch attached to the iron wall ring flickered softly.

Its orange flame danced back and forth, casting long, strange shadows across the room and across Kaelen’s face.

He hadn’t moved a single inch from his spot by the door.

He stood like an ancient stone statue, his right hand resting firmly on the silver hilt of his broadsword, his ears straining to catch even the faintest vibration from the stone corridor outside.

His wide shoulders were locked in a tense line, and his golden eyes were bright, sharp, and intensely focused as they reflected the fiery glow of the torchlight.

He looked like a predator waiting in the dark, ready to tear apart anything that dared to cross the threshold.

“You can rest for a moment, Kaelen,” I said, my voice sounding incredibly small and echoing softly against the bare rock walls of the quiet room.

“The heavy stone door is completely locked from the inside.

No one even knows this vault exists except for us.

You don’t need to stand there like a guard statue the entire night.”

Kaelen didn’t turn around immediately to look at me.

He kept his eyes fixed on the narrow seam of the stone door for a few more seconds, ensuring everything remained perfectly sealed, before he slowly let out a deep, heavy breath.

He turned his head, his posture relaxing just a fraction of an inch as his intense gaze landed on me.

The tight, angry expression that usually hardened his handsome features softened just a little bit.

“A good soldier never lowers his guard when the enemy is actively moving, Evangeline,” he said quietly, his deep, gravelly voice washing over the silence of the room.

“Malakai has proved tonight that he has resources inside the palace walls.

If he can bypass the eastern perimeter to start a fire, we cannot assume any location is completely safe until the fires are out and the suspects are locked in the dungeons.”

“You aren’t just a regular soldier anymore, Kaelen.

You are my personal guard,” I reminded him gently, offering a small, tired smile as I leaned my head back against the wall.

“And right now, your Queen is telling you to take a breath.

Sit down before you pass out from sheer exhaustion and stress.

I need you fully functional if someone actually manages to find this place.”

Kaelen hesitated for a long moment, his golden eyes scanning my face as if searching for an excuse to decline.

But then, realizing I wasn’t going to drop the matter, he let go of his sword hilt and walked over to the wooden bench.

He sat down on the far end, deliberately leaving a respectful amount of space between us.

Even with the distance, his massive, broad frame still felt incredibly close in the small vault.

I could feel the heat radiating off his body, cutting right through the freezing chill of the underground air.

His knuckles were slightly bruised from his training routines, and the heavy leather of his gloves was covered in gray dust from our frantic, dark rush down the servant staircases.

“Do you think the royal archives will survive the fire?” I asked, my thoughts drifting back to the burning palace wing above us.

My fingers traced the velvet fabric of my gown nervously.

“If Malakai burns all those tax papers and ledger files, we lose our physical proof.

The other nobles might start to doubt my words if I don’t have the written records to show them when the tribunal begins.”

“Malakai is desperate, but desperation makes people sloppy,” Kaelen replied, his jaw tightening as his golden eyes darkened with disgust.

“He acted far too fast because he was terrified of you.

Even if the main archive building burns to the ground, a clever accountant always leaves duplicates and transaction receipts in the secondary storage vaults.

We will hunt them down, one by one.

And more importantly, the entire council saw his face today.

They saw how terrified he looked when you dropped that heavy ledger on the table.

They already know the truth in their hearts, even if the papers turn to ash.”

I leaned my head back against the cold stone, letting out a heavy, exhausted sigh that felt like it carried the weight of two different lifetimes.

“I knew corporate politics could be incredibly nasty back…

well, in my past studies, but I forgot that in this world, people actually burn down entire historical buildings just because they got caught stealing from the treasury.”

Kaelen turned his head fully to look at me, a sudden flash of curiosity lighting up his brilliant golden eyes.

“You often say things like that, Your Majesty.

‘In my world.’ ‘Back in my past studies.’ You talk about courts, business strategies, and financial audits as if you come from a completely different kingdom across the sea.”

My heart instantly skipped a beat, a cold jolt of panic shooting through my veins.

I had to quickly remind myself to be far more careful with my words.

He had no idea that I was a reincarnated soul from a modern corporate world, trapped inside the body of a fantasy queen.

To Kaelen, I was just a sheltered royal who had suddenly grown a brilliant, ruthless brain overnight.

“I just meant…

before my father passed away, I spent a massive amount of time locked in the private royal library,” I lied smoothly, forcing my voice to stay calm and relaxed as I created a quick excuse.

“I read endless books about foreign strategy, trade laws, and merchant unions from distant lands.

The wealthy merchants in those kingdoms don’t use heavy iron swords to fight their battles.

They use binding contracts, legal loopholes, and intense financial audits to completely ruin their rivals without ever swinging a blade.

When I sat across from Malakai today, I realized their methods are much cleaner and far more devastating than traditional warfare.”

Kaelen stared at me for a long, quiet moment, his golden eyes searching my face with a terrifying intensity.

The look in his eyes was so deep, so focused, that it made my breath catch in my throat.

He looked completely captivated, deeply amazed by the way my mind worked.

There wasn’t a single shred of suspicion in his expression.

Only pure, unadulterated admiration.

“You are completely unlike any ruler this kingdom has ever seen, Evangeline,” he whispered, his voice dropping into a rough, low register that sent a soft thrill through my skin.

“The old stories of the royal bloodline always talk about queens who cried, panicked, and hid behind their councilors whenever trouble knocked on the castle doors.

But you…

you marched right into a snake pit full of hungry predators and cut off the head of the largest snake yourself without blinking.”

“Are you saying you prefer this fierce version of me, Sir Kaelen?” I teased softly, tilting my head up, letting a playful spark challenge his intense gaze.

“I am saying that it is the greatest honor of my life to protect you,” he replied, his tone turning completely serious, erasing any room for playfulness.

He reached out, his large, leather-gloved hand hovering in the cold air between us for a brief, hesitant second.

Then, as if making a definitive choice, he gently placed his warm palm over my cold, shivering fingers.

His grip was firm, strong, and incredibly grounding.

“I mean it, Evangeline,” he continued, looking right into my eyes with absolute, unwavering devotion.

“When I am standing next to you, watching you fight for this kingdom, I feel like this realm actually has a future worth bleeding for.

You make me want to see what tomorrow looks like.”

The raw, unfiltered honesty in his words completely blew me away.

In my past life as a corporate executive, every single person who smiled at me wanted something; a promotion, a raise, a partnership, or a piece of my power.

But Kaelen’s devotion felt completely clean, pure, and untainted by greed.

I was totally oblivious to the heavy, dark secrets he was carrying within his own heart.

To me, in this dark, freezing room, he was the only true, unbreakable ally I had left in a world full of monsters.

“Thank you, Kaelen,” I said softly, turning my hand over beneath his palm so I could lock my fingers firmly with his, squeezing back to show him he wasn’t alone.

A strange, deeply painful shadow instantly crossed his golden eyes when I squeezed his hand.

He looked like a man who had just been struck by a physical blow.

Slowly, he pulled his gaze away from mine, staring down at our joined fingers on the wooden bench.

His chest rose and fell in heavy, ragged breaths, as if a massive, silent war was tearing his mind apart from the inside out.

I watched him quietly, assuming he was just deeply stressed about the burning palace and the danger surrounding my safety.

Suddenly, a faint, rhythmic vibration thudded through the solid stone floor beneath our boots.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

Kaelen’s eyes snapped wide.

In a fraction of a second, he dropped my hand and vaulted to his feet.

His broadsword left its leather scabbard with a sharp, lethal hiss that echoed loudly against the rock walls.

Without a single word, he stepped directly in front of me, his towering frame completely blocking me from the entrance as he raised his blade.

“Someone is at the outer chapel wall,” Kaelen whispered, his entire body tightly coiled like a spring, ready to kill whatever came through.

The heavy stone door groaned loudly against its ancient tracks, and then, very slowly, it began to slide open, revealing a dark silhouette standing in the torchlight.
