THE CELLAR

“He’s coming here,” Casimir said.

Not surprised, confirming something he’d half-expected.Full novel: DANGEROUS WILD ORGASM — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“He’s always known about this house.

He let your mother believe he didn’t.” He looked at me.

“He let her build it because he knew, eventually, it would bring the right people into one place.”

Edouard moved, the first time since entering.

Crossed to the fireplace, reached behind the mantle with the practiced ease of someone who’d been here before, who’d helped furnish this house.

He pulled an envelope free.

Held it out to me.

“Your mother left this separately,” he said.

“Not in any box.

For the moment everything was in one room.” His eyes held mine.

“She called it the key.

Said you’d know what it opened.”

I took it.

Heavy.

Not paper, something solid.

Inside: an old iron key.

I looked at Edouard.

“What does it open.”

“Below this house,” he said.

“Everything she couldn’t fit in the Bruges box because it was too large.

Everything she spent two years copying and compiling.”

“How long do we have,” I said.

“Before Victor lands.”

“Fifty minutes,” Dorian said.

I went to the kitchen.

Edouard moved a rug with one foot, a wooden panel, recessed handle, iron lock.

The key fit.

Turned smooth.

Stairs going down.

Fluorescent light, cold and practical.

I went first.

My mother had organized this the way people organize when chaos means losing the only weapon they have.

Shelves on three walls, labeled in her handwriting, the slightly-too-large capitals, the leftward lean.

Not documents.

Drives.

Rows of them, indexed, cross-referenced in a binder the size of a city directory.

Casimir let out a breath.

Controlled, but it told me everything, this was more than even he’d known.

Eleven sections.

Eleven names, except the last, which carried only a date.

Three years ago.

The month she died.

Dorian was reading labels.

“She’s indexed by victim.”

I reached for the last section.

His hand found my arm, not stopping me, checking.

Are you sure.

I met his eyes.

Took the drive.

Put it in my pocket, against my ribs, beside the letter.

Later.

In a room that wasn’t a crisis.

“We don’t have time to review here,” Casimir said, already moving.

“Copy everything to cloud storage, three servers, two jurisdictions.

Your grandfather’s Zurich lawyer has held power of attorney for this exact purpose for two years.”

“I made the call from the car,” Edouard said.

“He’s awake.”

Dorian’s laptop was already open, cable running to the first drive, upload beginning.

Elara appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Thirty-eight minutes.

His jet crossed into Swiss airspace.”

We worked.

Twenty-two minutes.

Four people who understood urgency, copying thirty years of evidence to three servers with confirmation receipts to Zurich.

Sixteen minutes left.

I put every drive back exactly where I’d found it.

My father knowing we’d found this was a different problem than my father finding it and believing we hadn’t.

Back upstairs.

Rug down.

Kitchen normal.

“He can’t be allowed in this house,” Casimir said.

“He has a key,” Edouard said.

“Then we change what he finds when he arrives.” Casimir looked around.

“He’s expecting people cornered with a box he believes is everything we have.

He doesn’t know about the cellar, the archive, the Zurich lawyer.

He knows about the recording, Pieter’s will, the DNA evidence.” He looked at Dorian.

“He’s coming to make a final offer.

Or threat.”

“Let him,” Dorian said.

“And record it.” He looked at me.

“Your mother got him to say the honest thing once.

Let’s do it again.”

“He’ll recognize a recorder,” I said.

Elara held up her phone.

“I’ve been recording since Casimir played the tape.

Backed up to cloud every thirty seconds.” She looked at me.

“Your mother wasn’t the only one who knows how to do this.”

The gate outside, old iron, that specific creak.

Nine minutes early.

He never waited for schedules.

Footsteps on the path.

The door.
