It failed.
He had attempted to use Descent Magic to summon the late Captain back in the form of a Heroic Spirit, but…
Naturally, it failed.
The principle behind Xia Jia’s magic, [Descender], is quite simple.
It opens a spatial gate to summon creatures with whom one shares a bond from the other side of the gate.
The biological existence is composed of magic power, entirely similar to the “Third Magic” from a certain moon-based world, using the Heaven’s Reincarnation Pool as a seat for Heroic Spirits to complete the ritual.
However, Xia Jia still failed.
Of course, with the mental capacity of a Level 1 novice, how could he possibly summon a Level 4 Captain?
A Falna is a transformation of both body and mind; even after death, the soul retains the strength of a Level 4.
It is precisely because of this that great ancient heroes possess immense talent even after reincarnation!
But Xia Jia sensed that it wasn’t just a matter of magic power.
“I have a rough understanding of your idea.”
Astraea closed her eyes and thought for a moment before explaining:
“In this world, the souls of children who have passed on return to Heaven to await reincarnation.”
“Not only that, even the souls of monsters return to the Dungeon to be reborn.”
“Your failure might be due to this.”
Xia Jia frowned: “Do you mean the former Captain’s soul has already been reincarnated?”
Impossible.
According to the original work, the future “useless” elf relied on her own magic to summon a projection of Alise.
This is proof enough that the Captain hadn’t reincarnated that quickly.
As expected, Astraea shook her head:
“No, under the premise that almost all gods have descended to the Lower World, there certainly aren’t enough gods left to manage reincarnation in Heaven, and the cycle of reincarnation would be prolonged—usually, one cycle is around a thousand years.”
“If that’s the case, the goblin worked just fine.
Yet I failed,” Xia Jia said, feeling frustrated.
“Perhaps the souls of monsters on the surface no longer return to the Dungeon’s management?” Astraea speculated.
“It is also possible that souls separated from the Dungeon require a long time to return?”
Astraea sighed: “In reality, even the gods don’t know much about the study of the Dungeon.”
Reminded by this, Xia Jia’s eyes lit up.
That’s right, human souls return to Heaven!
If the Dungeon, which was merely sealed by the gods, had a way to block the return of souls, then with the added obstruction of Heaven, it was inevitable that his attempt to summon her would fail.
This was a rift between worlds!
It was the difference between a sheet of paper and a steel plate.
Now that he knew the reason for his failure, Xia Jia regained his confidence.
Problems are meant to be solved.
In Xia Jia’s view, such an interval was not unbreakable; at the very least, there was an existence right in front of him that had passed through the “steel plate” to reach the Lower World!
“Astraea-sama, I beg you.
Please tell me how to anchor world coordinates!” Xia Jia prostrated himself piously.
“This is very important.”
“What are you trying to do?” Astraea’s tone was calm, but her inner thoughts were in turmoil.
What is this child planning?
He wouldn’t be thinking of running off to Heaven to drag people back, would he?!
Astraea guessed correctly; Xia Jia did indeed want to reach beyond the world to pull people back!
“Since it is impossible to recall a soul across worlds, we simply need to open a hole between them!”
Heaven possesses the great lake where souls are kept, and souls that have yet to reincarnate inevitably linger and dwell in the surrounding areas.
In Xia Jia’s view, Heaven was akin to the “Root” in the Type-Moon world, and the lake was the Throne of Heroes!
What he needed to do was open an opening between the two, with Xia Jia himself acting as the “Holy Grail” placed in the middle, then use that to simulate a Heroic Spirit summoning ritual.
Xia Jia spread his hands and said confidently: “As long as the barriers between worlds vanish, it is not impossible to recall our predecessors, or even the heroes of the past, back into this world!”
A wild, imaginative hypothesis—yet Xia Jia truly had the potential to achieve it.
As someone who had traversed worlds twice, the magic he awakened as a result possessed the capability to break through world barriers.
Just like his magic name, “Gate Master,” he was the master of the gate—the master of the gates of space and time.
Of course, to be qualified to summon heroes, he would require an enormous amount of magic power, and perhaps even magic power on the scale of ley lines; Xia Jia certainly couldn’t accomplish this in the short term.
But this related to Xia Jia’s true plan.
He touched the mobile phone in his pocket—that proof of his own civilization, which he had already powered off, contained the ambition he had harbored for over ten years: a “Multi-world Chat Group!”
Seeing Xia Jia’s eyes shining with intensity, Astraea earnestly closed her eyes and finally gave a slight nod:
“I understand.
I will tell you how to locate a world anchor point.”
“Really?” Xia Jia was pleasantly surprised.
Astraea had her own hidden motives; if those children could return, no matter what form it took, perhaps Ryuu would not remain so extreme in her ways.
Astraea sighed while touching her face: “What a troublesome child.
Even if I didn’t tell you, you would have found a way to figure it out yourself.
There’s just no helping you.”
The Goddess sensed that Xia Jia was currently in a state of skill-triggering, and at an unprecedented peak.
If it continued, it might truly break through to S-rank and reach genuine divine power.
One must realize that even among Level 7 adventurers, few ever push their Development Abilities to B-rank.
But this would not do.
Having just received the Falna, Xia Jia could not withstand a higher-level [Mystery].
Astraea intervened and interrupted the process in time.
Gods can choose their landing positions when descending to the Lower World, which is proof enough that even after sealing their divine power, they know how to confirm world coordinates, down to specific nearby locations.
At this moment, Astraea was patiently teaching Xia Jia how to locate a spatial anchor.
Of course, with Xia Jia’s level, it was impossible to directly lock onto a specific world and leave an anchor; therefore, he needed a medium.
Whether it was an object or a bond, he needed a catalyst.
As for Xia Jia, he himself, along with Astraea who descended from Heaven, were two of the greatest space-time anchors.
Therefore…
“Stars, gather here!”
Following the incantation, golden starlight fluttered from Xia Jia’s fingertips, and a spatial tunnel the size of a needle eye suddenly appeared before them, before shattering into starlight.
Xia Jia gasped for air and cast his gaze toward Astraea.
“That’s right, that is the scent of Heaven.” Astraea’s expression was one of astonishment; she hadn’t expected Xia Jia’s [Mystery] to accomplish this so easily.
“In the history of the Lower World, the last time the Gate of Heaven was opened was during the grand magic, [Spirit Six-Circle]—that was a grand forbidden spell released only by the combined efforts of six spirits.”
Although the two were incomparable, the principle was the same; both involved opening the Gate of Heaven, though the former could draw upon divine power from Heaven to bring down divine punishment, while Xia Jia had merely cracked an opening.
“At my current level of magic power, I can’t maintain it at all, let alone draw upon divine power.”
Xia Jia sighed, but quickly smiled: “However, at least it was a success.”
“Yes, congratulations, Xia-chan!” Astraea smiled.
“Then, without further delay, let’s update your ability stats.”
It had been six days since he joined the Familia, and Xia Jia had been polishing his magic incessantly, going to sleep only when he was completely mentally exhausted every single time.
When Xia Jia received his updated stats, sure enough…
Magic: I0 → I53.
So slow, Xia Jia couldn’t help but complain.
Other stats had increased by single digits, and even the most easily grown stat, Magic, had only increased by 53 points.
And this was during the initial phase of receiving a Falna.
“Those guys who go into the Dungeon once and see their stats skyrocket by hundreds are all ‘cheaters’.”
Oh, wait, I’m a cheater too.
Never mind!
After updating his stats, the Goddess left, instructing Xia Jia to get some rest.
It was only then that Xia Jia silently pulled out his phone and began his true plan!
