Lucian’s words left Kato feeling a little helpless.
“That’s right, Lucian, so it’s quite a bother for me.”
As she said it, she looked at him with surprise.
“I really didn’t expect that you’d actually be able to notice me.
No one else in the class did.”
It was genuinely incredible; she’d been paying attention to the room the whole time, and when she introduced herself, not one classmate had even glanced over.
In fact, everyone acted as if she didn’t exist.
Aside from the Class Teacher, only Lucian had looked at her.
He’d worn the face of someone who’d seen a ghost, but he’d clearly noticed her all the same.
“My situation’s a bit special, which is why I reacted that way.
Kato-san, please take care of me.” Lucian smiled and greeted her properly.
At his words, Kato kept her expression calm, though the corners of her mouth lifted slightly.
“Please take care of me too.”
She felt a little happy.
In this new class, there was actually a classmate who could notice her.
And normally, at school, hardly anyone besides the teachers ever did.
At the very least, maybe she wouldn’t have to be so lonely from now on.
Lucian counted as the first classmate to strike up a conversation with her.
While the two of them talked, Yukinoshita, seated in front, overheard.
She turned her head; she hadn’t noticed Kato before.
But she’d caught every word Lucian said, and only then did her attention shift to the person he was speaking with.
Now Yukinoshita felt as if she’d seen a ghost too.
What kind of Talent was this?
Such a faint presence; if she hadn’t focused her mind, she really wouldn’t have noticed Kato at all.
Kato was just sitting there, yet some strange power made people tune her out on reflex.
After greeting her, Lucian let the conversation taper off at the right moment.
When he turned back, he caught Yukinoshita’s gaze.
“Hello, Yukinoshita-san.” He gave the cold girl a nod.
At his words, Yukinoshita came back to herself and nodded in return.
“Hello.”
With that, she turned away and said nothing more.
Lucian didn’t mind, though.
Barring surprises, her personality was probably the same as in the anime.
Trying to hold a conversation with her would be an uphill battle.
So Lucian wasn’t about to embarrass himself by rushing over to pester her like some simp.
Their corner went quiet again.
Lucian took out his phone once more to scroll videos, still learning what he could from the internet.
The rest of the class was busy talking, getting to know their new classmates.
A few boys took the initiative to approach Yukinoshita, but she shut down every conversation in just a couple of sentences.
That made it clear to everyone: the girl was not easy to get along with.
Time slipped by, and noon soon arrived.
The lunch bell rang.
At that, Lucian stood right up, meaning to head to the cafeteria.
As he rose, he glanced at Kato and couldn’t help asking, “Kato-san, you just got to this school.
Want me to show you to the cafeteria?”
The question caught her off guard.
She hadn’t expected him to ask.
She’d planned to find it on her own, but now that wasn’t necessary.
“Okay, then I’ll trouble you, Lucian.” Kato didn’t refuse.
She really was unfamiliar with the school; with Lucian leading the way, she could relax a little.
“Then let’s go.
What about you, Yukinoshita?
Want to come along?
I noticed you seemed to pick up on Kato-san too.
You’re both from Sakura District, so it’d be good to get to know each other.” Lucian tossed in the extra remark.
Hearing that, Kato looked at Yukinoshita in surprise.
She’d noticed her as well?
She genuinely hadn’t caught that.
Yukinoshita felt a small stir at his words.
She looked at Kato, then nodded.
They were the only two from Sakura District in the class, so they ought to get acquainted.
“Then I’ll go with you.” Yukinoshita quickly tidied her desk, stood, and left the classroom together with Lucian and Kato.
The cafeteria wasn’t far from the classroom, and this building was rather special.
Lucian’s classroom was on the second floor, for instance, but the first floor was a huge, open battle arena.
It was a place for people to train, and the third floor was for Meditation.
In short, the whole building was for Lucian’s class to use.
Since the building held only their class, barring surprises, Lucian and the others would be having their lessons here from now on.
Coming downstairs, Lucian led the two toward the cafeteria, him in front, Yukinoshita and Kato behind.
The two of them huddled close, whispering, while Lucian up front was purely a guide.
He didn’t shamelessly crowd in to chat them up; the three of them weren’t that close yet.
Having delivered them to the cafeteria, Lucian’s job was done, and there was no need for him to get further involved in whatever came next.
As for how to pay for the food and all that, they’d surely know, having studied here so long.
He split off from them once they reached the cafeteria, going his own way to grab a tray and order.
Not long after he’d gotten his food and found a seat, though, Kato and Yukinoshita came over with their own trays.
The two sat down right across from him, and Kato even held out a bottle of water.
“Lucian, please, have some water.”
That caught Lucian slightly off guard.
He looked up at her, and seeing the expectation in her eyes, he didn’t refuse.
He took the drink, thanked her, and went back to eating with his head down.
The two didn’t mind; they quietly started on their own meals.
None of the three spoke, just eating in silence.
Boys eat much faster than girls.
The two of them had barely made a dent when Lucian had already finished.
Done with his meal, Lucian picked up the drink Kato had given him, took a few gulps, then stood.
“Take your time, you two.
I’ll head off first.”
With that, he grabbed his tray and left, leaving the two stunned girls behind.
Watching him go, Kato couldn’t help complaining, “Do boys always eat that fast?”
They hadn’t even really started, yet Lucian was already done.
That was maybe a bit too quick.
“It’s normal.
Also, I think he was a little uncomfortable sitting with us, probably because we just met.” Yukinoshita could understand it.
It was common knowledge that boys ate fast; you saw people griping about it online all the time.
And she’d noticed, too, that Lucian had been a touch uncomfortable seated with them.
That much she could understand.
