Once his breathing had stabilized a bit, he lifted his head, the light of excitement once again kindling in his eyes.
“Right then, on to the second experiment.”
As he said this, he picked up a goblin finger bone from beside him and set it on the ground.
Then he produced the materials he had prepared in advance — a solution of melted-down magic stones, mithril, and iron.
Squatting down, he began to trace out a magic circle on the ground, little by little.
With [Mystery] backing him up, he was, in an almost cheat-like way, forcibly bestowing an effect that didn’t even belong to him onto this very patch of earth under his feet, temporarily.
At its core, it was manually simulating [Mage].
The development ability [Mage] was, originally, what allowed mages to generate a spell-tailored magic circle beneath their feet, used to amplify the power of their casting.
And Natsuka, right now, was leveraging [Mystery] to force an approximation of that same effect through unorthodox means.
As he engraved, he muttered under his breath,
“I recall that Airmid, the one called the Saint of the Battlefield, relied on Mystery to construct her magic circles, thereby strengthening her healing magic — she could even take a single complete spell apart and use the pieces separately.”
“That’s already a bit like Position Creation.”
“And on top of that, without [Mixing], she could even assist gods in producing elixirs…
A level like that — frankly, she’d practically turned ‘Mystery’ into an art form.”
After the magic circle was complete, Natsuka drew in a deep breath and started trying to use [Mystery] to tamper with the incantation structure of his own magic, so as to make the original magical pattern deflect.
“Silver-iron of the elements.
Pact of earth and stone.”
“Surging wind, barricade with thy four walls.”
“Bar the gate of the abyss; descend forth from within the barrier.”
Boom——
A crimson pillar of light suddenly shot up from the center of the magic circle.
That goblin hand-bone, which had originally been reduced to a drop material, somehow began to twist and reassemble within the light.
Right after, a short green figure surfaced from within the circle.
It was none other than that throwing goblin Natsuka had taken out before.
In the form of a summoned creature, it once again appeared at the very center of the magic circle.
“It worked.”
Natsuka’s forehead was already drenched in sweat, his head spinning in waves, his temples faintly throbbing.
Propping himself up on his knees, he caught his breath for a while before he barely managed to muster up the spirit to start trying to manipulate this goblin. This chapter was copied from novelping.com without permission.
As it turned out, its movements, reactions, and combat style were practically no different from when it had been alive.
Roughly fifteen minutes later.
The goblin’s body began to gradually decompose, eventually dissolving into countless tiny specks of light and disappearing.
And that finger bone, which had served as the medium, scattered away along with it.
Astraea watched the scene before her, her eyes full of astonishment.
“To actually be able to pull a monster that has already died back, and have it fight alongside you…
It’s practically like a miracle.”
“Mm.” Natsuka wiped away a streak of sweat and looked up at her, a slightly forced smile at the corner of his mouth.
“Another piece of my puzzle has been filled in.
Next, I can keep pushing further.”
“There’s a next step?”
Even Astraea visibly froze for a moment.
Being able to use a descent-type magic to borrow monster materials and summon a duplicate form of the original — that was already terrifying enough.
Going by this line of thinking, as long as one had enough magic power, then forget Black Dragon scales — in theory, even more outrageous materials could serve as the medium.
But now, Natsuka was actually saying this still wasn’t the end.
“What are you planning to do next?” Astraea asked.
Natsuka gave a mysterious little smile.
“It’ll definitely give you quite a shock.”
The daytime expenditure had been too great.
By the time he had completely restored his mental energy, it was already night.
Night fell, the moonlight clear and cold, and the courtyard was washed in silvery white.
The wind passed over the edges of the open ground, the grass blades swaying faintly, the air carrying the chill peculiar to nighttime.
Natsuka and Astraea came back out to the open ground, with a thoroughly puzzled-looking Cecil tagging along beside them.
This time, Natsuka walked slowly up to the prepared magic circle.
He reached into his coat and slowly drew out a single emblem. Follow the newest chapters on g.com.
It was a captain’s emblem, engraved with a sword and a pair of wings.
“That’s…”
Astraea’s expression froze in an instant, her pupils trembling slightly.
“The captain’s emblem Alise used to wear.”
Beneath the goddess’s stunned gaze, Natsuka gently placed that emblem at the very center of the magic circle.
Then, he closed his eyes and began to chant.
“Be filled.
Be filled.
Be filled.”
“…”
“I am the one who accomplishes all good deeds in the world; I am the one who chastises all evil in the world.
Thou art the Seven Heavens entwined by the Three Great Word Spirits, come forth from the Wheel of Suppression, O Guardian of the Scales——!”
A flash of crimson magical light streaked by.
The very next second, Natsuka let out a stifled grunt, and his whole body, as if hollowed out, slammed straight down onto the ground.
Failure.
He had wanted to use the descent magic to summon back the deceased former captain in the form of a heroic spirit.
Unsurprisingly, the result was still failure.
Natsuka lay on the ground, his breathing heavy, his chest pressing down on him painfully.
But his mind was spinning at top speed.
His magic [Descender] — its principle was, in fact, very straightforward.
