Winter arrived early.
Snow covered the rooftops of Stone River Town, muffling the sounds of the busy streets. The mountains surrounding the valley stood silent beneath a blanket of white, and the river flowed slowly beneath thin sheets of ice.
Another year had passed.
Ye Chen was now eleven.
His face had begun to lose the softness of childhood. Months of gathering herbs, carrying water, and training from dawn until dusk had broadened his shoulders and strengthened his limbs. His hands were rough with calluses, his movements calm and deliberate.
Yet the greatest change was invisible.
He had learned patience.
On the first day of spring, the elderly physician summoned Ye Chen and Gu Ming to the courtyard.
The old man placed a worn travel bag on the stone table.
"It is time."
Ye Chen looked at him in surprise.
"Time for what?"
The physician smiled.
"To leave."
Lin Yue, who had been drying herbs nearby, quietly lowered her hands.
Although she had known this day would come, her heart still tightened.
"The Azure Cloud Sect?"
Ye Chen asked.
The physician slowly nodded.
"I promised Elder Han that if, after one year, I still believed you should walk this road, I would personally take you to Azure Cloud Mountain."
Gu Ming smiled faintly.
"I never thought the day would arrive so quickly."
"It didn't."
The physician looked toward Ye Chen.
"It only feels that way."
That evening, the small family shared dinner together.
There was no celebration.
Only warm food and quiet conversation.
Lin Yue carefully placed another piece of meat into Ye Chen's bowl.
He immediately moved half of it back onto hers.
She smiled.
"You've become stubborn."
"I learned from Father."
For a moment...
Neither of them spoke.
Then, unexpectedly, they both laughed.
The laughter was gentle.
Bittersweet.
It carried grief...
But no longer despair.
Later that night, Lin Yue called Ye Chen outside.
The moon illuminated the quiet courtyard.
From within her robe, she removed a small cloth bundle.
"I've been keeping this safe."
Ye Chen carefully opened it.
Inside lay his father's knife.
Its wooden handle was worn smooth, and the steel blade bore tiny marks from years of sharpening.
"It's not a weapon."
Lin Yue said softly.
"It's a farmer's knife."
She gently placed it into his hands.
"Your father carried it every day."
Ye Chen traced the familiar handle with his fingers.
He remembered watching Ye Shan use it to harvest grain, carve wooden toys, and prepare firewood.
It had never been meant to kill.
"Take it."
Lin Yue smiled through moist eyes.
"So wherever your road leads..."
"...you'll remember where it began."
Ye Chen bowed deeply.
"I will."
Three days later, the journey began.
The elderly physician walked at the front.
Gu Ming carried their supplies.
Ye Chen followed quietly, his father's knife hanging at his waist beneath his robe.
Lin Yue remained standing outside the clinic until they disappeared beyond the southern gate.
Only then did she whisper,
"Come back alive."
The wind carried her words into the distance.
Azure Cloud Mountain rose far above the surrounding landscape.
Unlike ordinary mountains, its peak pierced through the clouds themselves.
Waterfalls cascaded down sheer cliffs, while ancient forests stretched endlessly across its lower slopes.
Halfway up the mountain stood a colossal stone staircase.
Each step was carved from white granite.
Thousands of them.
At the foot of the staircase stood dozens of young boys and girls from every corner of the region.
Some wore expensive silk robes.
Others arrived barefoot.
Some carried swords.
Others clung nervously to their parents.
Every one of them had come for the same reason.
To become disciples of the Azure Cloud Sect.
Ye Chen quietly observed the crowd.
Nobles.
Merchants.
Hunters.
Farmers.
For the first time, birth mattered less than potential.
Or so it appeared.
A deep bell echoed across the mountain.
The conversations instantly ceased.
An elderly cultivator dressed in azure robes slowly descended the staircase.
His long white hair flowed behind him, and though he walked without haste, each step carried an indescribable dignity.
His voice spread across the entire plaza without effort.
"Welcome."
"I am Elder Xu."
"You have come seeking the path of martial arts."
His calm gaze swept across the hundreds of hopeful faces.
"Most of you will fail."
No one dared speak.
"This is not cruelty."
"It is reality."
He raised one hand toward the endless staircase.
"The first examination..."
"...is simply reaching the summit."
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Ye Chen looked upward.
The staircase seemed endless.
Lost among the clouds.
Elder Xu continued,
"Those who give up..."
"...may leave peacefully."
"Those who collapse..."
"...will be carried down."
"But understand this."
His voice became solemn.
"No one will carry you through life."
With a wave of his sleeve, a massive bronze gong sounded.
The examination had begun.
Hundreds of young candidates surged toward the staircase.
Some sprinted recklessly.
Others climbed steadily.
Ye Chen did not move.
He quietly watched.
The physician smiled faintly.
"What are you waiting for?"
Ye Chen answered calmly,
"The mountain isn't running away."
Then, after allowing the crowd to thin, he placed one foot upon the first step.
He did not know it.
But from a pavilion hidden high above the clouds, Elder Han watched the young boy with quiet interest.
"He has learned..."
the Elder murmured.
"...that haste is often the first enemy of those seeking greatness."
Far away, unseen by anyone on the mountain, the black-robed man observed the same scene from the depths of the forest.
A cruel smile spread across his face.
"So..."
he whispered.
"The game truly begins now."
The ordinary farmer's son had taken his first step toward the martial world.
Neither he nor anyone else could imagine that one day...
Those same steps would shake the heavens themselves.
