The Bloodhorn Boar charged again, and this time Grey didn’t immediately dodge. Instead, he watched the creature carefully as it accelerated toward him, paying attention to the movement of its shoulders, the position of its legs, and the subtle shift in its head immediately before it committed to the attack.

At the last possible moment, Grey stepped aside and allowed the boar to rush past before twisting his body and striking its rear leg with his weapon.

The blow landed solidly but failed to penetrate deeply enough to cause serious damage, and the boar responded with an enraged roar as it swung around far faster than something of its size should have been able to move.Full novel: Dark Evolution Begins With An SSS Yandere Dragon MILF — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Grey jumped backward just before its horns tore through the space where his body had been, and the realization that followed made him more focused rather than afraid.

It was fast but it was also predictable.

Every time the Bloodhorn Boar prepared to charge, it lowered its head slightly and shifted its weight onto its front legs before accelerating.

The movement was subtle enough that an inexperienced fighter might never notice it, but Grey had spent the last several days learning how to survive by observing patterns, and his enhanced senses made those small changes considerably easier to recognize.

The boar charged again.

Grey watched it approach without moving, allowing his Predatory Instinct to warn him of the exact moment when the creature was about to commit. He waited until the last possible instant before stepping aside, then immediately began moving toward the large tree behind him while keeping the boar’s attention focused on his position.

The Bloodhorn Boar turned and followed.

Grey’s breathing remained controlled as he deliberately backed toward the exposed roots, making sure not to move quickly enough for the creature to lose interest. His eyes remained fixed on its movements while his mind calculated the distance between himself, the roots, and the charging beast.

The creature lowered its head.

There it was.

Grey’s mouth curved into a small smile as he tightened his grip around the weapon. "Got you."

The Bloodhorn Boar released another furious roar and charged directly toward him, completely committed to crushing the smaller creature standing in its path.

Grey waited until the final second before shifting his body aside.

The Bloodhorn Boar thundered past him, but instead of finding empty ground beneath its hooves, one of its front legs struck the thick exposed root hidden beneath the vegetation. The sudden obstruction disrupted its balance and sent its enormous body stumbling forward, forcing its head downward as it struggled to regain control.

Grey didn’t waste the opportunity.

He immediately lunged toward the exposed side of its neck and drove his weapon into the vulnerable gap beneath its jaw, putting the full strength of his newly evolved body behind the strike. The crude weapon pierced through the softer flesh, and the Bloodhorn Boar released a deafening roar as it desperately attempted to shake him loose.

Grey held on.

The creature slammed against the ground, sending dirt flying around them, but Grey twisted his weapon deeper and struck again before the beast could recover. His arms trembled from the force of the struggle, yet he refused to let go until the Bloodhorn Boar’s movements gradually became weaker.

Grey remained crouched for several seconds, breathing heavily while staring at the dead monster beneath him. His entire body was covered in dirt, his arms ached from the struggle, and his weapon was nearly broken, but despite all of that, a grin slowly spread across his face.

He had done it.

He had killed a Level 5 monster.

More importantly, he had done it without relying purely on luck.

The system appeared before him.

[Bloodhorn Boar has been defeated.]

[Experience acquired.]

[Level increased.]

[Current Level: 4]

Grey stared at the notification before slowly exhaling, allowing himself a moment to appreciate the progress. He had started this world as a weak Level 1 Lesser Goblin that could barely run from a predator, and now he had managed to kill something significantly stronger by using his abilities, his surroundings, and his own understanding of the creature.

A quiet groan from nearby reminded him that the fight wasn’t the only thing he needed to worry about.

Grey turned toward the goblin and found it sitting against a tree, one hand pressed against its side while its stone axe rested several meters away. It was still watching him, but the suspicion in its eyes had changed slightly, replaced by something Grey couldn’t quite identify.

"You were hunting this thing, weren’t you?" Grey asked while approaching cautiously.

The goblin looked toward the Bloodhorn Boar before giving a slow nod.

Grey glanced between the creature and the corpse before shaking his head with a faint smile. "You picked a pretty dangerous target for a meal."

The goblin didn’t respond, although its gaze remained fixed on the boar.

Grey crouched beside the corpse and examined it carefully as the system responded almost immediately.

[Corpse detected.]

[Possible actions:]

[Consume]

[Extract Trait]

Grey’s attention immediately shifted toward the second option.

"Let’s see what you’ve got."

The system displayed several possible traits.

[Bloodhorn — Level 1]

[Enhanced Muscular Density — Level 1]

[Impact Resistance — Level 1]

Grey studied the three options while considering which one would provide the greatest benefit to his current evolution path. The Bloodhorn trait could potentially strengthen his attacks, Enhanced Muscular Density could improve his physical power, while Impact Resistance might make him more capable of surviving attacks that would otherwise cripple him.

Before he could make a decision, however, the goblin suddenly looked toward the forest.

Grey noticed the movement and followed its gaze, his expression becoming more serious as an unfamiliar sensation crawled across his skin. The forest had become strangely quiet, almost as though every creature nearby had sensed something approaching and decided that remaining silent was safer than revealing its position.

Then a distant roar echoed through the trees.

The sound was deep enough to vibrate through the ground beneath Grey’s feet, carrying a pressure that made his Predatory Instinct flare violently inside his mind.

The system appeared again.

[Warning.]

[Powerful lifeform detected.]

[Distance: Unknown.]

Grey slowly stood while staring into the darkness beyond the trees, his fingers tightening around the damaged weapon still in his hand. Only moments ago, killing a Level 5 Bloodhorn Boar had felt like a major accomplishment, but whatever had produced that roar had just reminded him that the forest contained creatures far beyond anything he was currently prepared to face.

His eyes narrowed as he looked toward the distant darkness.

"Level 4 isn’t even close to the top of the food chain, is it?"

The goblin beside him remained silent, its expression suggesting that it already knew the answer.

Grey looked down at the Bloodhorn Boar, then toward the forest where the mysterious roar had disappeared into the night, and for the first time since entering this part of the forest, he understood that becoming stronger wasn’t simply about reaching the next level.

There was always something stronger waiting beyond the next tree.
