While Conner and Raven shared an unusual moment of sincerity and revelation on the porch of the farmhouse, a very similar scene was unfolding elsewhere in Smallville.
The air at the edge of the woods was cool, and the scent of wild vegetation and wet earth completely filled the environment.
John and Kyla walked side by side along a narrow dirt path.
The silence between them wasn’t awkward at all; on the contrary, it was filled with a tranquility and peace so deep that neither of them dared to break it.
John couldn’t help but look at Kyla out of the corner of his eye.
The gentle afternoon breeze caused a few strands of her long dark hair to dance across her face, forcing her to delicately brush them away every now and then with a subtle gesture.
He stood fascinated watching her, and almost without realizing it, the corners of his lips curved into an involuntary smile.
For the young man, this was already, without a doubt, a perfect date.
“Thanks for the date, John,” Kyla said suddenly, breaking the silence while winking and flashing him a smile that made the boy’s heart race in an instant.
“I had a lot of fun today.”
“I had a lot of fun too, Kyla,” John replied with total sincerity, holding her gaze without hesitating.
“Being with you today made time fly by way too fast.”
Kyla let out a small, melodious laugh.
“Is that a complaint?”
“Hey, no!
It’s just…
an observation,” John explained quickly, feeling the heat rise up his neck.
Then, after blushing a little, he continued honestly, “Though, well…
yeah.
I wish this afternoon could have lasted a bit longer.”
She looked down for a moment, unable to hide the light but obvious blush that crept onto her cheeks at the confession.
They continued walking slowly under the shade of the trees, until a subtle movement caused their hands to accidentally brush against each other.
Both looked away at the same time toward opposite sides of the path, awkwardly pretending nothing had happened.
However, a few steps further, John gathered enough courage that his heritage granted him.
With a certain shyness, he reached his hand out toward her and left it open.
“Can I…?”
Kyla looked at the boy’s extended hand and, after a few seconds that felt like a mystical eternity to John, she intertwined her fingers with his.
“Sure.
You can,” she replied softly.
The contact was incredibly warm.
Neither said anything else for several minutes, allowing the crunch of leaves beneath their feet to be the only background music.
John could feel the rhythmic pounding of his own heart in his chest, while a hard-to-describe happiness filled every corner of his body.
Never in his life had he imagined that the simple act of walking hand-in-hand with someone could make him feel so complete and at peace.
Kyla, for her part, lightly squeezed her grip.
“You know what’s funny, John?”
“What’s that?” he asked, curious.
“Before I came to meet you, I was a little nervous.
I really thought it would be an awkward date, full of weird silences,” Kyla confessed, turning to look him straight in the eye.
“And was it?” John asked, expectant and with a slight trace of nervousness in his voice.
She gazed at him in silence for a few seconds, enjoying the boy’s adorable expression of worry, before flashing a wide grin and shaking her head.
“Not at all.
In fact…
I think it’s been one of the best afternoons I’ve had in a long time.”
“So…
does that mean there will be a second date?”
Kyla watched him closely, playing with the young man’s anticipation.
With a highly playful smile, she tilted her head.
“Hmm…
let me think about it…”
She pretended to ponder the answer with extreme seriousness for a couple of moments, before closing the distance between them and leaning a bit closer to his shoulder.
“Yes.
There definitely will be.”
John let out a small laugh of pure happiness.
However, the playful atmosphere gradually shifted.
Kyla stared at him, moved by the sensitivity and respect the boy always showed her.
She let out a long sigh, as if she had made a momentous decision in her mind, and squeezed her fingers against his.
“John…
you know, now that we’re moving forward…
I want to reveal something to you,” Kyla said in a serious tone that bewildered the boy.
John was surprised by the sudden change in atmosphere, but he tried to maintain his composure.
Looking at Kyla’s serious face, he wondered what could be so grave, so he nodded firmly and reassured her:
“Sure.
You can tell me anything, Kyla.
I’ll always support you, no matter what.”
Kyla smiled at his words, feeling the necessary courage rise in her chest.
“I trust you.
There’s a secret about me that, apart from my family, nobody else in this world knows.
And I think it’s time you see it with your own eyes.”
John’s curiosity peaked, paying absolute attention to her every move.
He immediately assumed she would tell him some mystical family secret or a sacred tradition from the reserve, but what happened next left him completely stunned, plunging him into a state of absolute shock.
Kyla closed her eyes and took a deep breath, connecting with the earth.
Suddenly, before John’s astonished eyes, Kyla’s figure began to shapeshift with a mystical fluidity.
In a blink, the beautiful girl disappeared entirely from his sight, leaving her civilian clothes scattered on the forest floor, and in her place appeared an imposing, beautiful, and majestic wolf with snow-white fur.
The wolf fixed its bright eyes—which kept the same spark and intelligence of Kyla—on John’s frozen face, taking a gentle and peaceful step forward.
John stood completely static, unable to react, his eyes wide as saucers.
A mix of shock, pure excitement, and absolute wonder coursed through every fiber of his being.
His mind raced at a thousand miles an hour; thanks to the teachings of his father Conner, he already knew perfectly well that this world had people with superhuman abilities and that eccentricities existed—after all, his own family and best friend were living proof.
But it was one very different thing to process it in theory, and quite another to see that Kyla, his school friend and the girl he was officially starting to date, was one of them.
Seeing her transformed into a spiritual animal was something on a completely mystical level.
However, after the initial impact, John managed to calm his thoughts, and a mental smile appeared in his head: ‘Maybe it’s not a bad thing at all that she’s part of that hidden side of the world too.’
“K-Kyla…” John whispered, completely awed by the animal’s majesty.
The white wolf performed an elegant turn on itself, and with that same mystical fluidity, the energy retracted.
The fur vanished, giving way once again to the girl’s human form.
But at that exact instant, a small logistical problem occurred.
John reacted a couple of seconds too late and discovered, his face turning completely red, that upon returning to her human form, Kyla wasn’t wearing her clothes, which were still lying on the ground.
“Turn around!”
John, acting purely mechanically and at top speed out of panic, immediately spun around to face away from her while murmuring under his breath with a sigh:
“Beautiful…”
After the rustle of fabric was heard and Kyla finished getting dressed in a hurry, John received the signal to turn back around, clearing his throat to break the tension.
“This is my big secret…
I’m a skinwalker, John,” she explained, shyly rubbing her arms.
“I can transform into the wolf, which is my spirit animal.
I was so scared to show you because I thought…
I thought you’d see me as a monster from the legends.”
“You’re not a monster,” John interrupted her immediately, taking a firm step forward and gripping her hands tightly, his eyes shining with a genuine and protective emotion.
“Kyla, your power is absolutely amazing!
You have no idea how incredible and beautiful you are.”
Seeing John’s incredibly positive, mature, and understanding reaction, Kyla felt an enormous, heavy anvil lift off her shoulders.
She smiled with relief, her cheeks heavily flushed by the boy’s sincere compliments.
John, however, stared down at their intertwined hands.
A brief but intense internal battle raged in his mind.
Kyla had just had the courage to trust him with her deepest, most vulnerable secret, laying her identity bare before him.
How could he keep hiding his true nature from her?
She deserved the exact same honesty from his side.
After hesitating for a brief second, John looked at her with a determination loaded with deep affection.
“Kyla…
if you trust me like this, then I have to be completely fair with you too.
My family and I…
we aren’t what people consider normal either.”
Kyla looked at him with genuine confusion, tilting her head, not understanding what he meant.
John gently let go of her hands and took a step back.
Without warning and with a subtle push, John’s body rose into the air in a fluid manner, lifting completely off the ground and hovering a couple of meters high, defying gravity with total naturalness as the forest breeze rustled his clothes.
Kyla slapped her hands over her mouth, her eyes widening to the extreme, completely stunned and unable to process that the quiet, studious boy from high school had the mystical or physical capability to float in the air just like that.
“Looks like we both have some pretty interesting secrets to hide, don’t you think?” John said with a playful smile, before descending smoothly until the soles of his shoes touched the ground again.
Following the initial astonishment, John proceeded to sit with her on a nearby log and began explaining the hidden side of the world in detail, telling her about the concept of metahumans and the various scientific and genetic theories about their origins that his father had taught them.
“So…
the reason why specific individuals in my tribe have the ability to shapeshift is because we are what you call metahumans?” Kyla asked, awed by the avalanche of new information that gave meaning to her lineage.
John simply nodded his head, confirming she was right.
Kyla continued processing everything in her mind, connecting the dots.
“That means in this world…
there are a lot more people with powers out there?”
John nodded again with a calm smile.
Kyla looked up at the treetops and the clear sky for a few seconds, taking in the vastness of the world that had just opened up before her.
Finally, she let out a light, amused laugh, looking at her date.
“What a first date…
It really was great.”
She had planned the day with the firm intention of impressing and scaring John a little with her secret, but by the end of the day, he was the one who had left her completely amazed.
