The atmosphere was unusually quiet, accompanied by the bubbling of the fragrant fish soup in the iron pot.
Both Shin and Urokodaki Sakonji remained silent for a while before Shin spoke first.
“Senior Urokodaki, please!”
Hearing this, Urokodaki Sakonji removed his tengu mask, revealing his face to Shin.
Upon seeing the old man’s appearance, Shin was not particularly surprised or shocked.
Judging from his advanced age, he was probably over sixty.
Yet even at that age, he still maintained an incredibly resolute spirit.
After removing his tengu mask, Urokodaki Sakonji did not immediately begin.
Instead, he asked Shin, “Before we start, I’d like to know who taught you Water Breathing?”
Hearing this, Shin was surprised by the old man’s question.
Slightly taken aback, he replied, “I saw Tomioka Giyu use it, so I tried to imitate it, and the effect was surprisingly good!”
Of course, this was all an exaggeration by Shin.
The reason he said this was simply to elevate his own image.
This time, Urokodaki Sakonji did not show any surprise; instead, his expression became even more serious.
The reason he was not surprised was because Urokodaki Sakonji thought Shin was bragging.
One had to gradually explore and familiarize oneself with it, mastering its origins and characteristics, and finally, through constant repetition, make it an instinct.
“Learning the Water Breathing techniques belonging to the five major schools isn’t as easy as you say.
You can’t reach your level simply by imitation.
Even Giyu took two years to reach your current level,” Urokodaki Sakonji continued calmly.
Shin did not refute him, but continued, “Senior Urokodaki, you have to believe that geniuses exist in this world, and I am one of them.”
Without further explanation, Shin attributed his mastery of Water Breathing to his genius.
After all, he had nothing to say about the system, nor was there any need to explain its existence to Urokodaki Sakonji.
Hearing this, Urokodaki Sakonji suddenly laughed, a laugh that seemed to imply that Shin was somewhat arrogant.
Soon, Urokodaki Sakonji’s laughter abruptly stopped, and his expression became somewhat melancholic.
“I once had a very outstanding disciple, even more so than Giyu, but he paid for it with his life because of his arrogance.
Or rather, it was excessive concern for others that ultimately harmed him.
To save everyone participating in the selection, he finally collapsed from exhaustion on the mountain, and naturally, he was eaten by a demon.”
Urokodaki Sakonji slowly recounted this to Shin, but Shin did not understand the old man’s true intention.
Was he simply telling him not to be arrogant?
Or was it a case of “if you don’t court death, you won’t die”?
“I’m telling you this to tell you that since you consider yourself a genius, then you absolutely mustn’t let me see this tragedy happen again. Read this novel at novelping(.)com for the best experience.
Trying to do things beyond one’s capabilities is actually a sign of arrogance.”
After listening to Urokodaki Sakonji’s explanation, Shin finally understood.
It turned out that his words reminded him of his deceased disciple, which was why he had uttered such heavy words.
