Darkness. Heat. Pressure on all sides.
She existed in it without understanding what it was. Not asleep, not awake. Something in between. An awareness without a body to move, without eyes to open, without a mouth to scream.
Then the pain came.
It started small. A pulling sensation deep inside her chest, like two hands gripping the same thing from opposite directions and pulling. Then it grew. Spread through her whole being like fire and ice meeting in her veins, each one trying to burn the other out.
She couldn't move. Couldn't cry out. Could only feel her body tearing itself apart from the inside.
A notification appeared in her mind. Cold. Clean. Clinical.
[System activated]
Host condition: critical
Bloodline conflict detected: Human bloodline vs Blood Demon bloodline
Compatibility: 0%
Estimated time until host death: 3 days
The host's two bloodlines are mutually destructive. Without intervention, the host will not survive.
She was dying. She hadn't even been born yet and she was dying.
Another notification.
[Proposal]
The system can stabilize the host's bloodline conflict by forcing both bloodlines into equilibrium.
Condition: The host must accept the system and serve as its surveillance unit.
Accept / Decline
She accepted.
There was no deliberation. No weighing of pros and cons. She was a soul trapped in a dying body suspended in fluid and darkness. Whatever this system was, whatever it wanted from her, it was better than ceasing to exist.
The system moved.
It didn't feel like medicine. It felt like something threading itself into her blood, wrapping around the two warring forces inside her and pulling them apart. Not resolving them. Not merging them. Just holding them still. Two wild animals separated by a fence that constant, quiet effort had to maintain.
The pain didn't vanish. It dulled. Settled into something she could endure.
Then the system began to speak.
[System Overview]
This is a surveillance system.
Its function is to guide the host into becoming a being who can observe the important figures of this world from close range, record their journeys, and continue existing without becoming a disruptive force in their stories.
She lay in the warmth and darkness and read the words floating in her mind.
A surveillance system. She was going to be a surveillance unit. The wording was blunt and impersonal, like a job description handed to someone who hadn't applied for the job.
Then the next notification came, and it was worse.
[Host Profile]
Previous life: Unemployed. Primary activities: watching television programmes, gaming, sleeping.
The host's deep desire to observe stories — to watch characters move through their lives without stepping into the frame — has been recognized as this system's founding wish.
The system exists to fulfill this wish.
She stared at the words.
It had read her. Not her body, not her bloodlines. Her. The person she used to be. The woman who spent her days on a couch watching other people's stories unfold on a screen. Who never tried to be the main character. Who was perfectly happy being the audience.
The system continued. Methodical. Thorough.
[Core Functions]
1. Surveillance Map
The host perceives the world overlaid with a mental map marking important individuals, danger zones, treasure locations, and quest objectives. Updates in real time. Cannot be disabled.
So she would see everything. Everyone who mattered, every place of significance, laid out in her mind like markers on a game minimap. Whether she wanted to or not.
2. Perfect Memory
The system records all information the host observes. Any witnessed detail can be recalled with perfect clarity.
She wouldn't just see things. She would remember them. Perfectly. Forever. Every expression, every word, every death she watched happen and couldn't prevent.
3. Bystander Field
A passive aura that makes the host unremarkable to others. People will naturally overlook her, forget her presence, and fail to register her as significant. This is not invisibility. She can still be seen if someone deliberately focuses on her. But she will never stand out unless she does something significant.
Perfect for a watcher.
The host can read, write, understand, and speak any language in this world.
A small mercy. At least she wouldn't have to learn.
5. Spatial Awareness
The host has an innate sense of all entities and objects within a fixed radius. Positions, movement speed, direction. Range scales with cultivation level.
Another tool for observation. She would always know who was near her, how fast they were moving, where they were headed.
6. Surveillance Exchange
The host can access a store to purchase cultivation resources, blood demon items, techniques, equipment, and utilities using surveillance value.
A store. Currency. She could buy things. Grow stronger. The system wasn't just keeping her alive — it was giving her a way to improve herself.
7. Quest System
The system generates surveillance quests based on upcoming events related to important figures. Quests direct the host to specific locations and observation targets. Completing quests earns surveillance value and additional rewards.
She would be told where to go and who to watch. Like missions in a game. Except she was the one living inside them.
8. Pain Feedback
If the host interferes with a designated story event, the system will enforce punishment through physical pain, body lock, or both. Severity scales with the level of interference.
And there it was. The leash.
Then the rules.
[Core Rule]
Minimal disturbance. The host must not interfere with the stories of designated important figures.
Interference includes but is not limited to:
— Attacking a designated figure
— Taking a designated treasure or inheritance
— Warning anyone about a future event
— Revealing information about designated figures to others
— Directly altering the outcome of a designated event
Violations will result in immediate punishment.
She read it twice. The wording was careful. It didn't say she couldn't fight. It didn't say she couldn't take treasures. It said she couldn't interfere with designated figures and designated events.
Which meant the system was going to tell her what she could and couldn't touch. And she would have to follow it for the rest of her life.
One more notification.
[Bloodline Status]
The host possesses two bloodlines:
— Human bloodline (maternal)
— Blood Demon bloodline (paternal)
These bloodlines are inherently incompatible. The system is maintaining equilibrium between them.
If the system is removed, the host will die.
The Blood Demon bloodline grants the host unique body cultivation potential.
Blood demons grow by consuming human and beast blood, then performing Blood Tempering — an internal refinement process that transforms consumed blood into physical power.
The system can perform Blood Tempering automatically on the host's behalf.
The host's ancestral bloodline ceiling: Calamity Demon.
The system is not bound by ancestral bloodline limits.
Human from her mother. Blood demon from a father she would never know. Two halves of herself that wanted to destroy each other, held together by a system she couldn't escape.
If the system died, she died.
She was chained to it forever.
But the last line lingered. The system was not bound by ancestral bloodline limits. Her father's bloodline was Calamity — that should have been her ceiling. The most she could ever become. But the system had quietly told her, in the same clinical tone as everything else, that it didn't care about that rule.
After all of that — the explanations, the rules, the bloodline report — the system issued its first quest.
[Quest received]
Objective: Sleep.
Reward: 30 surveillance value per 3 days of sleep.
This quest is recurring and does not expire.
She almost laughed.
Sleep. That was it. That was her first mission as a surveillance unit. Lie still and sleep. And the system would pay her for it. Every three days, thirty surveillance value. Forever.
She could do that.
She did do that.
The months passed in a haze. She drifted in and out of awareness, sometimes conscious of the warmth around her, sometimes lost in nothing. The system occasionally fed her fragments — markers appearing on the map she couldn't see yet, quest updates for events happening somewhere in the world above. She absorbed them without understanding.
Every three days, another 30 surveillance value. Quiet. Automatic. Like a heartbeat.
Then the pressure changed. The darkness shifted. The world pushed her out.
She was born.
The quest didn't end. It never ended. She kept sleeping. Kept earning. The crib, the mat, the bed — wherever she lay down, the system counted the hours and paid her in three-day cycles.
Ten years.
She had lived ten years in this world under this system. Ten years of sleeping and earning. Ten years of spending what she earned, one careful purchase at a time.
The Qi absorption bed was her first — tier 2, quadruple Qi absorption rate during sleep. Two thousand surveillance value. She'd saved for months to afford it and never regretted the purchase for a single day. Every night she slept, Qi poured into her meridians four times faster than normal. Her Qi cultivation climbed while she did nothing.
She bought beast blood. Common grade first, then uncommon, then rare. Each vial fed her blood demon half. She'd drink the blood before sleeping, and the system would handle the Blood Tempering while she rested — no pain, no struggle, no failed refinement. The raw power in the blood was extracted, refined, and folded into her body with perfect efficiency. Every drop utilized. Nothing wasted.
A normal blood demon would have to endure the Tempering themselves. Would have to learn to control the process, hold the blood inside their body while it thrashed and fought and tried to tear them apart from within. Most failed on their first attempts. Many never mastered it at all. The ones who did spent years perfecting it, and even then, every refinement was a gamble — too much blood at once, blood too strong for their current body, a momentary lapse in control, and the Tempering backfired.
Luoxue never experienced any of that. She drank. She slept. She woke up stronger.
Blood purification pills came with the blood — raw beast blood was volatile, and even with the system handling Tempering, the pills stabilized the mixture beforehand. Made it safer. Cleaner.
She bought a stealth robe for herself. A storage ring to hold everything. Spirit-thread clothing that looked ordinary but passively absorbed Qi during the day.
She even bought a second Qi absorption bed. Tier 2. Two thousand more surveillance value. Swapped it into her mother's room one afternoon without explanation. Her mother never asked. Probably assumed it was a sect allocation. The woman was Nascent Soul — a tier 1 bed wouldn't have worked on her anyway.
And through all of it, the sleep quest never stopped. Thirty surveillance value every three days. Sleep, earn, spend, sleep, earn, spend. The system had built her life around the one thing she was exceptional at — doing nothing.
Late stage Foundation Establishment in Qi cultivation. Body cultivation strengthened by years of beast blood and automated Blood Tempering — tougher than her Qi level suggested, denser muscle, harder bone, sharper reflexes. Her blood demon half made her a brute force instrument wrapped in the body of a girl who looked like she'd never trained a day in her life.
She was also tired. Tired in a way sleep couldn't fix. Tired in the bones, in the spirit, in the part of her that used to sit on a couch and watch stories for fun.
So she slept. Because what else was there to do?
Then yesterday happened.
She met a person the system couldn't scan nor see.
Nothing. At first she assumed he wasn't marked because he wasn't a protagonist but it's as if he doesn't exist
Like a hole punched in the map where a person should be.
She could see him with her eyes. She could hear him breathing. But the system insisted the space he occupied was empty.
She lay on her bed and stared at the ceiling and thought about what this could mean.
Why? Why couldn't the system see him? Was he immune? Was the system broken? Was he something the system wasn't designed to handle? Something from outside its scope?
She turned the questions over and over in her mind. They circled like water going down a drain, faster and faster, and then —
She stopped.
Her heart was pounding.
It didn't matter why.
It doesn't matter why.
What mattered was what she could do with it.
If the system couldn't see Yusheng, then the system couldn't track what Yusheng did. If the system couldn't track what Yusheng did, then the system couldn't punish him for doing it. He existed outside the rules. Outside the leash. Outside the fence that had held her in place for ten years.
She sat up in bed.
She was grinning.
For the first time in years — maybe for the first time in this life — Ye Luoxue was genuinely, viscerally excited.
She laughed then quickly got up and headed to Yusheng's room
She reached Yusheng's room and pushed it open.
Empty.
It seemed he wasn't here.
She took his bedding and placed it on a chair then bought a new one in the store this also increased the rate of absorbing Qi by 50 percent. She might as well sleep while waiting for him
The blanket was warm against her skin. Faint Qi seeped into her meridians — a trickle, barely noticeable at her level, but pleasant. She leaned back against the wall.
She would wait for him here.
She closed her eyes.
And because she was Ye Luoxue, she fell asleep within minutes.
"Hey."
A voice. A hand on her shoulder.
Her eyes opened.
A boy was crouching in front of her. Young face. Cute features. Except his eyes were steady and direct in a way that didn't match the rest of him.
Di Yusheng.
She smiled she was genuinely happy to see him.
Then the system spoke.
[Quest received]
Objective: Observe. Assisted by an elder of the sect,a young demon hunter, will infiltrate the Cloud-Step Sect through the eastern ward.
The host must observe the infiltration without interfering.
Reward: 300 surveillance value
Time of arrival :15 minutes
She read it.
A protagonist. Infiltrating her sect. Tonight.
The system wanted her to watch. Again. Stand in the shadows and observe and record and do nothing. Like always.
Her smile widened.
"Perfect timing."
She opened the Surveillance Exchange. Her balance sat at a comfortable number — tens of thousands of surveillance value accumulated over ten years of sleeping and questing, minus what she'd spent on beds, blood, pills, and gear. The 150 for a standard stealth robe was barely a rounding error.
Surveillance value -150
Item acquired: Stealth Robe (standard)
The robe materialized in her hands. Dark fabric, smooth and cool to the touch. She held it out to Yusheng.
"Wear this, then come with me."
She also took out her own and worn it.
He looked at the robe. Looked at her.
"Where to?"
"There's no time to explain. Be quick."
He put it on. The fabric settled over his shoulders and seemed to drink the light around him. For a moment he looked like a shadow that had learned to stand upright.
He followed her.
Brief hesitation then he finally spoke "just to confirm you know I can't leave the peak right? ."
She led him out of the room and into the evening air, her pulse quick and steady in her ears. The map pulsed in her vision. The eastern ward was marked. Lin Xue's approach route was already traced in a thin gold line.
"I already asked for permission to bring you so it's ok"
For the first time in ten years, Ye Luoxue was stepping into a quest with something to look up to.
She held Yusheng's hand then said "Try to keep up"
