The teacher was busy explaining today’s activities while everyone else stretched or chatted with their friends.

I, on the other hand, had absolutely no interest in any of it.

Leaning against the wall with one earbud in, I lazily scrolled through my phone, tuning out the noise around me.

The gym had been divided into two halves.

Section A occupied one side.

Section E occupied the other.

Even though everyone was pretending to mind their own business, the atmosphere felt…

off.

Uncomfortable.

Heavy.

After everything that had happened with Ella, Keifer, and Yuri, it wasn’t exactly surprising.

The whispers hadn’t stopped all week.

Every glance between the two sections seemed cautious, almost as if everyone was waiting for someone to start another fight.

Honestly, I never thought I’d witness the same love triangle happen twice.

First, it was Freya.

then it was Ella.

I almost laughed to myself.

Those two really were best friends for a reason.

“Jay.” A familiar voice pulled me away from my thoughts.

I looked up from my phone, my expression immediately flattening.

Yuri.

He stood a few feet away with his hands shoved into his pockets, watching me with that same unreadable expression he’d been wearing all week.

I raised an eyebrow before returning my attention to my phone.

“What do you want?” I asked lazily, scrolling through my screen as if he wasn’t standing right in front of me.

“I have the same question.” I let out a slow, irritated sigh.

Seriously?

For the past week, he’d been doing nothing but following me around whenever he got the chance, asking the exact same thing over and over again.

Who are you, really?

At first, I ignored him.

Then I mocked him.

After that, I threatened him.

None of it worked.

He was persistent.

Annoyingly persistent.

My grip around my phone tightened.

I could practically feel my patience slipping away.

“I don’t think it’s necessary for you to know who I am,” I snapped, shoving my phone into my pocket with more force than necessary.

I pushed myself away from the wall and finally looked him straight in the eyes.

“What exactly are you trying to achieve, Yuri?” My voice was sharp enough to make a few nearby students glance in our direction.

“You’ve been asking me the same damn question for a week.” “You follow me during breaks.” “You stop me after class.” “You corner me during lunch.” I folded my arms across my chest.

“It’s getting annoying.” Yuri didn’t react to my outburst.

He didn’t look offended.

He didn’t look angry.

If anything…

He looked…

determined.

That irritated me even more.

“What?” I scoffed.

“Cat got your tongue?” He shook his head slowly.

“No.” His voice remained calm.

My heart skipped.

Only for a split second.

Then I laughed.

A short, sarcastic laugh.

“Congratulations.” I tilted my head with a mocking smile.

“You’ve officially become crazier than your best friend.” But despite the smile on my face…

The words lingered in the back of my mind.

Because somehow…

Yuri had gotten closer to the truth than anyone else ever had.

“Alright, everyone!

Warm-up laps!” Coach called, clapping his hands together.

“Let’s get moving!” Finally.

I slipped my phone into my pocket with a quiet sigh and pushed myself off the wall.

The conversation with Yuri had already drained what little patience I had left, and the last thing I wanted was to spend another hour in gym class.

Still, I joined the rest of the class as we started jogging around the gym.

Sneakers squeaked against the polished hardwood floor while conversations blended into a dull hum.

Some people were already out of breath, others were laughing with their friends.

I kept my eyes forward.

“Yo, Jay!” I glanced to my left.

Kiko was stretching a few feet away, flashing me his usual carefree grin.

He lifted a hand and waved enthusiastically.

“Morning!” I didn’t smile.

I rarely did.

But I lifted my hand anyway, about to give him a small wave back.

That’s when someone slammed into my leg.

My balance disappeared in an instant.

I stumbled hard, catching myself with one hand against the floor before I completely fell.

A sharp sting shot through my knee as I sucked in a quiet breath.

I looked up.

Keifer.

Of course it was him.

He stood over me with an expression that was almost bored, like knocking me down hadn’t been a big deal.

“Tss.” He shrugged.

“You were in the way.” I stared at him.

There was plenty of room to pass me.

He hadn’t bumped into me by accident.

He wanted a reaction.

Slowly, I stood up, brushing the dust from my palms.

Keifer gave me one last smug look before turning around, clearly pleased with himself.

He’d barely taken a single step.

I casually shifted my foot behind his heel.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing obvious.

Just enough.

His shoe caught against my leg.

For a split second, his arms flailed wildly as he tried to catch himself.

Then— THUD!

He crashed face-first onto the gym floor.

The sound echoed through the entire gym.

Every conversation stopped.

The squeaking of sneakers faded into silence.

Even Coach looked over.

Keifer groaned, slowly lifting his head while rubbing his forehead.

A wave of whispers spread across Section E.

“Did Jay just trip him?” “I think she did…” “He totally deserved that.” “No way…” I folded my arms and looked down at him with a blank expression.

Then, after a beat, I tilted my head.

“Huh.” My voice was calm. Enjoying the story? Read on at g.com.

“I thought I was the one blocking the way.” A few students failed to hide their snickers.

Keifer’s face darkened.

Mine didn’t.

I simply turned around and continued jogging as if nothing had happened, leaving him to pick himself up in front of the entire gym.

“You crazy woman!” Keifer shouted, his voice ringing across the gym.

I came to a slow stop, turning just enough to look at him over my shoulder.

A laugh slipped from my lips—short, dry, and laced with pure disbelief.

“The only crazy person I see here is you, Keifer.” I didn’t wait for a response.

Rolling my eyes, I turned and resumed my pace, letting the rhythmic squeak of my sneakers against the polished hardwood drown him out.

As far as I was concerned, the conversation was over.

Apparently, he didn’t agree.

I had barely taken another step when fingers suddenly closed around my wrist.

The unexpected force yanked me backward.

“What—” The word never had the chance to leave my mouth.

Everything happened too quickly.

My momentum carried me toward him just as he instinctively pulled me around.

Neither of us had time to react.

Neither of us had enough room to catch ourselves.

The distance between us disappeared in an instant.

Our lips collided.

It wasn’t gentle.

It wasn’t intentional.

It was the kind of split-second accident that left your mind completely blank.

For a heartbeat, time seemed to freeze.

My eyes widened.

So did his.

The gym—the conversations, the footsteps, the coach barking instructions—everything dissolved into a dull, distant blur.

I couldn’t hear anything except the frantic pounding of my own heartbeat.

Then reality slammed back into me.

I shoved him away so hard he stumbled backward several steps, barely managing to keep his balance.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Every student in the gym had stopped moving.

Every head had turned toward us.

Even Coach stood frozen, whistle hanging loosely from his fingers.

Keifer stared at me, his expression stripped of every ounce of arrogance he’d worn just moments ago.

The smug grin was gone, replaced by something I had never seen on his face before.

Shock.

Pure, unmistakable shock.

I stood rooted to the spot, breathing hard, one hand still hanging in the air from where I’d shoved him.

My mind refused to process what had just happened.

Then, slowly, I lifted the back of my hand and wiped my lips without taking my eyes off him.

“What the hell…” I said quietly, my voice trembling with anger more than surprise.

The whispers began almost immediately.

At first, they were barely audible.

Then they spread through the gym like wildfire.

“…Did they just kiss?” “No way…” “I swear I saw it.” “Was that on purpose?” “Keifer grabbed her first.” “I don’t think either of them meant for that to happen…” The murmurs only grew louder.

For the first time since I’d met Mark Keifer Watson…

He didn’t have a single sarcastic remark.

He simply stood there, staring at me with the same stunned expression I knew was mirrored on my own face.

Neither of us had expected this.

And judging by the horrified looks spreading across both Section A and Section E…

Neither had anyone else.
