The Exiled Child

The palace was quiet.

Quiet to the point that the sound of candles burning inside the long corridors could be heard clearly.Full novel: DESTROYER OF WORLDS — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Night had fallen hours ago.

The servants had disappeared.

The guards had changed shifts.

The young princes had gone to their rooms.

But in a distant place inside the palace…

There was a window still lit.

The royal palace library.

The largest library in the kingdom.

Hundreds of thousands of books.

Shelves reaching the ceiling.

Manuscripts hundreds of years old.

And ancient statues of sages whose names no one remembered anymore.

In the middle of this silent world…

There was a small child.

Sitting alone.

No older than four.

His black hair hung over his eyes.

And a small body barely disappearing inside the huge wooden seat.

That child was…

Kentro.

He turned another page of the book.

Then another.

Then another.

He was not reading as children read.

He was not looking at pictures.

But at words.

At lines.

At stories.

As if something inside the books was calling him.

The elderly librarian once said:

“This child is strange.”

And when someone asked her:

“Why?”

She answered:

“Children run away from books.”

“But he…”

“The books chase him.”

Kentro closed one of the books.

Then he reached his hand toward a high shelf.

He could not reach.

He jumped.

He could not reach.

He looked around.

He pulled a small chair.

He stood on it.

Then he picked up an old book covered in dust.

It was different from the rest of the books.

Completely black.

Without a title.

Without a symbol.

Without a name.

He sat on the ground.

He opened the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

And suddenly…

He stopped.

His small eyes widened.

An ancient drawing appeared before him.

A man standing on a mountain of skulls.

And behind him, a world burning.

Beneath the drawing was a short sentence.

“When the Destroyer of Worlds returns…”

“The sky will tremble.”

Kentro stared at the words.

He did not understand their meaning.

But he felt something strange.

A feeling he did not know how to explain.

As if the words were looking at him.

Not at anyone else.

“I found you.”

The voice came from behind him.

Kentro jumped from his place.

Then he breathed in relief.

It was a woman.

The only person in the palace who always smiled at him.

She placed her hand on his head.

And said:

“I knew you were here.”

He raised the book toward her.

And said:

“Who is this?”

She looked at the drawing.

Then her face changed for a moment.

A very brief moment.

But it was there.

She quickly closed the book.

And said with a smile:

“Just a legend.”

“Old stories.”

“Don’t pay attention to it.”

But Kentro was not convinced.

He kept looking at the book.

At the name.

At the drawing.

At the man standing in the middle of the flames.

Then he whispered to himself:

“The Destroyer of Worlds…”

That night…

He did not know.

That this name would one day chase him.

Nor that the entire world would change because of it.

Nor that his life itself…

Had begun to deviate from its path since that moment.

Outside the library…

Inside one of the dark corridors…

There was a strange presence.

Watching.

In silence.

Looking at the child.

And looking at the book.

Then he said in a low voice:

“So…”

“The book has indeed reached him.”

And he disappeared into the darkness.

Years passed slowly.

But one thing did not change.

Kentro.

He was different from everyone else.

He did not like noise.

Nor celebrations.

Nor gatherings of noble children.

He spent most of his time among books.

Among quiet corridors.

Or alone under the shadows of trees inside the palace.

One day…

He was sitting on a stone wall overlooking the palace gardens.

Watching the clouds move slowly.

When he heard laughter approaching.

A group of children from high demon families.

They stopped before him.

They looked at him.

Then they exchanged glances.

Before one of them laughed and said:

“Here comes the little devil.”

The others burst into laughter.

Kentro looked at them in silence.

He did not understand.

This word had been repeated often these days.

“The little devil.”

One of them said mockingly:

“Be careful…”

“He might destroy the kingdom if he gets angry.”

Everyone laughed.

And another added:

“Or maybe he will burn the palace tonight.”

Kentro rose from his place.

And said calmly:

“My name is Kentro.”

A brief silence fell.

Then they burst into laughter again.

One of them pushed him hard.

He fell to the ground.

Another said while looking at him with contempt:

“Everyone knows your name.”

“But everyone also knows what you will become.”

They left him and went away.

As for Kentro…

He remained sitting in his place.

Trying to understand.

What had he done?

And why did everyone look at him this way?

As the months passed…

It was no longer just children.

Rather, fear began to spread inside the palace itself.

Among the servants.

Among the soldiers.

Even among some nobles.

They thought he could not hear.

But he heard.

Always.

“It is him.”

“The signs have begun to appear.”

“Do you think the prophecy is true?”

“I hope I am not here when he grows up.”

And one night…

Kentro was walking inside one of the royal corridors.

When he heard voices inside a closed room.

He stopped unintentionally.

“The matter can no longer be ignored.”

One of the voices said.

“The kingdom has begun to be disturbed.”

“And the people are talking.”

“If this continues…”

A brief silence.

Then came the reply:

“He must be removed.”

Kentro froze in place.

“He is just a child.”

“Today a child.”

Came the cold reply.

“And tomorrow?”

Then the other man said:

“If the prophecy is true…”

“Then his staying here will bring catastrophe.”

Kentro slowly moved away.

He did not wait to hear more.

That night…

He did not sleep.

He sat near his window.

Looking at the moon.

Trying to understand.

But the answer did not come.

Rather, the catastrophe came.

A few weeks later…

The entire palace shook.

A mysterious incident.

An explosion.

Dark energy.

And widespread chaos.

But everyone found one thing.

The traces of that energy…

Were close to where Kentro was.

And here…

Everything turned upside down.

The smiles disappeared.

The doors closed.

And fear became public.

Then the day came.

The emperors summoned him.

The small child stood inside the great judgment hall.

The massive black pillars surrounded him.

And the silence was terrifying.

The emperors stood in a line.

Their faces rigid.

Carrying no emotions.

And at the top of the hall…

Sat the Demon King.

Kentro looked at him.

As a son looks at his father.

And as a child looks at the person he believes will protect him.

But the king did not smile.

And did not even look at him.

Then one of the emperors stood.

And said in a voice that shook the hall:

“By order of His Majesty the Demon King…”

Kentro felt his heart stop.

“Kentro is exiled beyond the kingdom’s borders.”

Silence fell.

He did not understand.

He slowly raised his head.

He looked at the king.

“Why?”

The king did not answer.

“Did I do wrong?”

Silence.

“What did I do?”

Silence.

That silence was harsher than any judgment.

Then the emperors stood.

And advanced toward him.

They grabbed him and began to fly.

Only then…

Did Kentro begin to realize the truth.

They were not joking.

They were really banishing him.

He looked one last time toward the king.

He was waiting.

Any word.

Any objection.

Any sign.

But the Demon King remained seated.

With a rigid face.

As if he was watching a stranger.

Not a child who had lived inside his palace.

Then they flew outside the palace.

Amid heavy rain.

Amid thick darkness.

Amid endless sounds of beasts.

The Dark Forest.

The place where even soldiers did not dare to enter.

And when the gate closed behind him…

Kentro realized something for the first time.

That he had become alone.

Completely.

And so…

The child’s life ended.

And the legend’s birth began.
