Cold was the first thing Zion noticed.

It surrounded him, rising from the stone walls and floor.

The air smelled old, carrying dust, damp mineral, and something faintly metallic.Full novel: Dungeon Crafter — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Everything felt untouched for so long that even the silence seemed like it had permanently seeped into the walls..

Zion tried to open his eyes, but nothing changed.

For one disorienting moment, he wondered whether he had failed.

Then the darkness around him began to separate into shapes.

A vaulted ceiling curved high above the chamber, supported by thick stone pillars carved directly from the walls.

Most of the carvings had been covered beneath layers of dust, but he could still make out armored figures kneeling beneath swords, their blank stone faces turned toward the far end of the room.

Toward him.

Blue flames burned inside several iron braziers.

They gave off no smoke and very little warmth, while their weak light illuminated cracked stone, faded banners, and the broad steps beneath him.

The chamber was grand, or at least it had been once.

Now it looked like the forgotten crypt of some ancient king whose descendants had stopped visiting centuries ago.

Zion focused on the nearest pillar.

At least, he thought he was focusing on it.

He could see the room, but the sensation did not seem to come from any particular direction.

His awareness moved when he wanted it to, drifting from the braziers to the pillars before settling on the enormous stone doors at the opposite end of the chamber.

Each one was tall enough for a giant to walk through.

Heavy iron bands crossed the dark stone, and a circular seal glowed faintly where the doors met.

Zion tried to move but nothing happened.

He tried again with more urgency, but his body gave him no answer.

There was no tension in his arms, no shift of weight, not even the scrape of a shoe.

It was only then that he realized he was elevated above the rest of the chamber.

A massive throne rested at the top of the steps.

Its back rose behind him in jagged stone points, while its armrests had been carved into the heads of snarling beasts.

Dust covered nearly every surface except for one small place near the center of the seat, directly beneath where he was sitting.

Zion’s unease grew, but before he could look more closely, pale letters appeared in the air.

They did not emerge from anywhere in the room.

They simply existed inside his awareness, clear and cold.

[Awakening complete.]

A second line appeared beneath the first.

[Dungeon authority successfully established.]

Zion waited, but the words remained.

“Dungeon authority?”

He heard the question clearly, though no voice echoed through the chamber.

More text unfolded.

[Designation: Dungeon Lord]

[Position: Final Boss]

[Dungeon Status: Newly Formed]

Zion read the lines twice.

He understood each word individually, but together they seemed less cooperative.

“Final boss?” he repeated.

The system continued without acknowledging him.

[The Dungeon Lord serves as the governing authority and final objective of the dungeon.

All subordinate dungeon creatures may regenerate after defeat according to established dungeon rules.]

That sounded promising.

If anything at least it sounded cool.

[The Dungeon Lord does not regenerate.]

That was much less promising.

The blue flames in the nearest brazier flickered as another message appeared.

[The dungeon core is bound to the Dungeon Lord’s continued existence.

If the Dungeon Lord is destroyed, the dungeon will collapse.

Death will be permanent.]

Zion’s attention shifted toward the sealed doors, and the room suddenly felt much larger.

He imagined those enormous slabs opening and armored adventurers descending the steps.

Swords, spears, magic, and whatever else people carried when they entered a place specifically designed to be conquered.

All of it ending here with him.

He still didn’t know what he was, but the throne beneath him and the sheer scale of the chamber suggested something suitably terrible.

Perhaps an undead king, a skeletal dragon, or some enormous ancient warrior wearing enough armor to turn aside siege weapons.

Something worth being the final boss.

It would explain why he could see without opening his eyes.

It might even explain the strange absence of breath or heartbeat.

The next notification appeared.

[New dungeons receive a fourteen-day grace period.]

The seal across the doors brightened.

[During the grace period, the Final Boss Chamber cannot be entered by external challengers.

The dungeon entrance may be opened once a functional floor has been completed.

Essence may be earned normally through visitor entry, adventurer defeat, and dungeon activity.]

Zion focused on the number.

Fourteen days.

Oddly, that didn’t seem very long.

[When the grace period expires, the Final Boss Chamber will become accessible through standard dungeon progression.]

A timer appeared beneath the message.

[Founding Grace Remaining: 13 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes]

The last digit changed almost immediately.

“So that is already counting down.”

The system did not respond.

A pressure he had not noticed began gathering inside him.

It was not quite panic.

Panic felt sudden.

This was slower, a cold understanding settling into place one piece at a time.

He was a target.

Not metaphorically or eventually, but the final objective of a dungeon that did not yet have a single floor protecting him.

At least he was powerful.

He had to be.

The chamber was too grand for anything else.

Zion instinctively reached for the awareness he had been using to inspect the room.

It responded immediately, drawing inward toward the throne until, for the first time, he looked at himself.

A skull sat in the middle of the stone seat.

Nothing more.

There was no towering skeletal body beneath it.

No black armor.

No clawed hands resting across the throne.

He didn’t even have a spine.

A single human skull faced the enormous doors with a narrow crown resting crookedly across the top.

The metal had tarnished almost black in several places, and one side had bent inward as though someone had once stepped on it and decided the damage was not worth repairing.

Zion moved his awareness around the throne, but the skull did not turn with it.

He inspected the seat beside himself, then beneath the armrests, half expecting to find the rest of his body somewhere nearby.

“That is me?”

A status panel suddenly opened.

[Name: Zion]

[Race: Lesser Skeleton]

[Current Form: Skull]

[Position: Dungeon Lord / Final Boss]

[Level: 1]

The attributes appeared beneath it.

[Strength: 1]

[Vitality: 1]

[Agility: 1]

[Intelligence: 1]

[Will: 1]

Zion waited for another page but nothing appeared.

“Is this a display error?”

He had at least been hoping for a useful skill or ability, something that made him feel remotely qualified to serve as the final boss of a dungeon.

He focused on the Vitality stat.

[Vitality: 1]

[Minimal structural integrity.

Avoid impact.]

Zion went still.

He was already completely still, but now it felt intentional.

Avoid impact.

His attention moved down the broad steps leading away from the throne.

If someone knocked him from the seat, he would probably bounce at least twice before reaching the floor, and that alone might be enough to kill him.

An adventurer would not need a legendary sword or some forbidden spell.

They could pick him up and throw him against a wall, kick him down the stairs, or smash him with a sturdy hammer.

A particularly determined child could probably end the entire dungeon.

The crown somehow made the situation worse.

It didn’t make him look regal.

It made him look like someone had decorated the nearest skull and forgotten about it.

Zion looked toward the sealed doors again.

When the timer ended, those doors would no longer be protected by anything except what he managed to build beyond them.

He had no hands, no legs, and no body.

Even an insect had a better chance of defending itself.

And to make things even better, every one of his attributes was set to one.

Yet somewhere beyond the dungeon, a world full of adventurers already existed.

Strong ones.

Ambitious ones.

The kind of people who saw a newly formed dungeon and imagined treasure, glory, and a final boss waiting to be killed.

The meaning of the title settled inside him with absolute clarity.

Final boss was not a title.

It was a painted target.

Zion looked over the throne room again.

The kneeling statues, dead banners, and cold blue flames had all been arranged to make the chamber feel like the end of a journey.

The end of his journey.

He could almost see it from an adventurer’s perspective.

The doors would open.

An exhausted party would enter, weapons ready, and their eyes would slowly rise toward the throne.

Then the disappointment would set in.

After all that effort, their final opponent would be a skull waiting to be smashed.

“No.”

The word came without hesitation.

Zion didn’t know who had made him a Dungeon Lord.

He did not know where he had come from or why his awareness felt both new and strangely familiar.

For now, none of that mattered as much as the doors.

He could not let anyone reach them.

Not in fourteen days, not after.

Another notification appeared.

[Founding resources are now available.]

[Starting Essence: 1,000]

[Dungeon Store unlocked.]

[Three Lucky Draws available.]

Zion focused on the essence total first.

One thousand meant nothing without knowing what it could purchase, but it was already more useful than five attributes set to a single digit..

A new option opened at the edge of his awareness.

[Personal Advancement]

For the first time since learning what he was, some of the pressure inside him loosened.

So I can buy skills using essence.

The hollow sockets of his skull lit with blue flame as he immediately selected the option.

A single available skill appeared.

[Clatter — 25 Essence]

[Allows the user to rapidly strike the upper and lower teeth together, producing a faint rattling sound.]

Zion stared at the description.

Then he read it again, hoping he had missed some hidden secondary effect.

“Twenty-five essence.”

A faint preview sounded inside his awareness.

Click-click-click.

The noise was barely loud enough to make it to the stone doors.

Zion closed the menu.

His fear had not disappeared.

In fact it worsened.

Clatter was certainly not going to save him.

If anything, it would only draw unwanted attention to him.

Spending essence on buying this skill, or adding a point or two to his stats, wasn’t going to make any difference.

The only reliable answer was distance.

Walls.

Monsters.

Traps.

He needed entire floors filled with enough problems that no one ever saw the crown, the throne, or the embarrassingly fragile skull resting on it.

As long as no one could reach his boss room, he should be fine.

Zion opened the Dungeon Store.

Hundreds of darkened categories flowed down a seemingly endless list, most locked behind requirements he didn’t understand.

Only the small Founding Catalog at the top was available.

[Terrain]

[Monsters]

[Traps]

[Structures]

His attention shifted toward the three Lucky Draws waiting beside it.

He had no idea what sort of rewards they might contain, but if the system had given them to newly formed Dungeon Lords, there was at least a chance they would provide something powerful.

It made more sense to test his luck before spending any of his limited essence.

Zion glanced at the timer again.

Thirteen days, twenty-three hours, and fifty-four minutes remained to put something powerful between himself and the adventurers eventually coming to kill him.

He focused on the first draw.

“Skeletons,” he said.

“Give me cool skeletons.”

I had a lot of fun coming up with this story!

I hope you all enjoy~
