Chapter 11 — Mud and Patience

Elder Brother of the Yellow Flash

Karan's plan, when he laid it out to the Chamber's silent green light for the first time, sounded reasonable enough on paper. Master the basic Earth exercises. Master the basic Water exercises. Bring the two together once both were solid enough to survive being combined. Simple, orderly, exactly the kind of structured approach five years of Academy discipline had trained into him.

The Chamber, with its usual patient indifference to human optimism, spent the next several entries teaching him exactly how much that plan was going to cost.

Earth came first, mostly because Fumiko-sensei had drilled the foundational exercise into all three of her genin regardless of individual affinity — a simple technique meant to test raw control before anything more advanced, pressing chakra downward and outward through the soles of the feet to alter the density of the ground beneath them. For a Wind or Fire natured genin it was an academic exercise, useful mostly for balance training. For Karan, standing alone in the pale green quiet of his fourth extended Chamber stretch, it was supposed to be the foundation of everything else.

It took him the better part of two full inside-days just to get the ground beneath his feet to soften reliably instead of alternating, seemingly at random, between soft enough to sink into and hard enough to jar his ankle on contact. He fell twice, badly enough the second time that he spent an uncomfortable hour afterward icing a swollen ankle with water drawn awkwardly, gracelessly, from the small basin the Chamber allowed him — his first genuinely successful application of the Water half of his affinity, and one that felt considerably less glamorous than any elemental training montage he remembered from his old life had ever suggested it would be.

Nobody writes the part where you sprain your own ankle trying to make dirt behave, he thought, sitting on the cold not-quite-floor with his leg propped up, equal parts frustrated and, despite himself, faintly amused. That's apparently just mine to find out.

Water proved, if anything, more frustrating in the opposite direction — not because the control eluded him, but because there was so little of it to work with inside a training space that manifested exactly what he asked of it and nothing more. He could draw water from the basin readily enough, shape it into a controlled stream, hold it steady through increasingly complex patterns of movement. What he couldn't do, not for the first several attempts, was make it obey the way Earth chakra obeyed once he'd found the trick of it — water wanted to move, constantly, restlessly, and every attempt to hold it rigidly still ended in the stream collapsing back into an unglamorous puddle at his feet.

It was Kaoru's voice, unexpectedly, that finally helped him past that particular wall — not present in the Chamber, obviously, but remembered clearly enough from an evening conversation weeks earlier, some offhand comment about how Uchiha fire-users learned early that trying to force a flame to behave like something rigid only ever produced a flame that guttered out. You don't fight the nature of the element, Kaoru had said, half-joking, entirely serious underneath it. You just figure out what it already wants to do, and you get good at wanting the same thing at the same time.

Karan tried it on his sixth inside-day, standing ankle-deep in the shallow basin with his eyes closed, and stopped trying to hold the water rigid at all. He let it move the way water wanted to move, and simply guided the direction of that movement instead of fighting its nature outright — and for the first time, the stream held, twisting in a slow, controlled spiral around his raised arm instead of collapsing.

It wasn't impressive by any objective measure. It was, by every measure that actually mattered to him, the first genuine breakthrough of his entire elemental training, and he sat with the quiet satisfaction of it for a long, private moment before the Chamber's gentle warning chime — the signal that his six inside-days were drawing to their limit — pulled him back toward the door.

Combining the two proved, predictably, to be the hardest problem of all, and Karan spent three separate Chamber stretches over the following months failing at it in increasingly specific and educational ways.

His first real attempt produced nothing more dramatic than mud — actual, literal mud, thick and unremarkable, chakra barely involved in the process at all beyond the basic elemental manipulation required to mix earth and water together physically rather than through any deeper technique. Fumiko-sensei, when he mentioned the general shape of his progress at the training ground the following week without specifying exactly where the progress had happened, had laughed outright.

"That's not Mud Release," she said, not unkindly. "That's just mud. You've discovered a bucket, Namikaze, not a jutsu."

"It's a start," Karan said, entirely unbothered, and meant it.

The real difference, he came to understand slowly, painfully, across weeks of failed attempts, was that true Mud Release required the two chakra natures to fuse at the point of origin — not simply applied one after another to the same physical material, but woven together as a single unified chakra output from the very beginning of the technique's formation. It was, Fumiko-sensei confirmed once he'd worked out enough of the theory to ask her intelligent questions about it instead of just describing failures, a genuinely advanced technique, the kind most dual-natured shinobi spent years working toward rather than months.

"Good," Karan said, when she told him that, with a directness that made her raise an eyebrow at him again.

"Good?"

"I've got years," he said, which was truer than she could possibly know, and left her looking faintly bemused in the way she often did when he said something that sounded, on the surface, like an unusually mature attitude for a twelve-year-old to hold about his own limitations.

He didn't manage true fusion that year, or the year after. What he did manage, by the time his thirteenth birthday came and went without much fanfare beyond a home-cooked meal and Minato's characteristically blunt observation that Karan didn't look any stronger for having turned thirteen, was a genuinely reliable command of both halves of his affinity separately — Earth solid enough to reshape terrain meaningfully in a fight, Water controlled enough to use offensively rather than just decoratively — and the beginnings, in his most successful late-stretch attempts, of chakra that held together for a handful of seconds at the actual moment of fusion before collapsing back into its separate parts.

A handful of seconds wasn't a jutsu. He knew that. But it was progress, real and earned and entirely his own, built one frustrating inside-day at a time across a training space nobody else in his family would ever get to see the inside of — and every single evening he spent afterward sitting on the low wall behind the Academy yard, describing the vague shape of his progress to Kaoru without ever quite specifying how much time it had actually taken him, felt like exactly the kind of ordinary, hard-won life he'd promised himself, back on a rainy afternoon when he was four years old, that the Chamber's power was never supposed to replace.

One stretch at a time, he thought, watching Kaoru attempt, with increasing indignation, to skip a stone across the training yard's small pond and fail spectacularly at even that much simpler task. That's still the whole plan. It's just starting to actually work.

Coming in Chapter 12 — Chunin Exams

Fumiko-sensei brings her team news that will change the shape of the next several months entirely — Konoha's chunin exams are approaching, and for the first time, Karan's careful, unglamorous progress is about to be tested in front of people who have absolutely no idea what he's actually capable of.
