Chapter 18 — Karan's Match

Elder Brother of the Yellow Flash

His opponent's name was Genma — no relation, the proctor clarified dryly before the match began, to any shinobi currently serving in Konoha's ranks, which drew a small, tired laugh from the thinned-out crowd still filling the tower's central hall. He was a Kusagakure genin, wiry and quick-footed, carrying a short blade at his hip with the loose, practiced ease of someone who'd built his entire style around speed and precision rather than raw power.

Karan studied him across the cleared floor while the proctor ran through the preliminary round's rules — no time limit, victory by knockout, surrender, or a judged inability to continue, medical staff on standby, nothing that hadn't already been made clear at the exam's opening. Genma studied him back with the same careful, assessing attention, and Karan found himself, for the first time in this entire exam, facing an opponent with absolutely nothing to read from beyond what he could see standing in front of him right now.

No name from the story. No history I already know. No idea what he's actually capable of beyond a blade and quick feet. The thought settled into his chest not as fear but as something closer to relief. Good. Let's find out the honest way.

"Begin," the proctor said, and stepped back.

Genma opened fast, exactly as his loose, ready stance had promised — three quick strikes in close succession, blade angled to test rather than commit, probing for an opening rather than attempting to end things in one decisive blow. Karan gave ground deliberately on the first two, reading the rhythm of the attack, and caught the third on a redirected block that sent Genma's own momentum skidding half a step past him.

"Careful," Genma said, recovering fast, a faint, appreciative grin flickering across his face. "You read that better than most genin manage on a first exchange."

"Three years of a very patient sensei," Karan said, settling back into a ready stance of his own, and didn't elaborate further than that.

They traded another handful of exchanges, testing rather than committing, each of them mapping the other's rhythm with the careful, professional caution of shinobi who understood that overcommitting early against an unknown opponent was how promising exams ended in embarrassingly short matches. Karan noted, with the same detached attention he brought to a chakra-paper test, that Genma's footwork favored his right side slightly — nothing dramatic, nothing that would have been visible without three years of watching Fumiko-sensei drill positional awareness into him from every conceivable angle, but present, and useful.

He compensates for it by keeping the exchange fast enough that it doesn't usually matter, Karan thought, giving ground again on a fourth exchange, deliberately, to buy himself another half-second of observation. If I can force him to slow down, even slightly, that weakness gets considerably harder to hide.

He reached, mid-retreat, for the same rooted, downward pull of Earth chakra he'd spent three years cultivating, and let the ground beneath Genma's next forward step soften just enough to cost him a fraction of a second's stability — not a dramatic technique, nothing that would have impressed anyone watching from a distance, just a small, precise application of exactly the kind of control the Chamber had spent years teaching him to trust.

Genma stumbled, barely, correcting fast — but the correction favored his right side exactly as Karan had predicted, and Karan was already moving into the gap it created before the older genin had fully regained his footing.

The exchange that followed moved faster than anything before it, both genin committing properly for the first time, and Karan found himself falling into a rhythm that felt less like conscious thought and more like the accumulated weight of three years of drilling finally paying out all at once — a strike, a redirect, a counter that almost connected before Genma's genuinely excellent reflexes pulled him clear at the last possible instant.

"You're better than your file suggested," Genma said, breathing harder now, blade still steady despite it. "Kusa's intelligence had you down as competent. Competent doesn't usually manage that."

"Everyone keeps having files on me this exam," Karan said, matching his breathing to the exchange rather than the conversation, "and none of you seem to agree on what's actually in them."

Genma's grin sharpened at that, and he came in harder on the next exchange, blade work speeding up in a way that told Karan the testing phase of the match had genuinely ended. Karan met the increased pace as best he could, drawing on every hour of taijutsu drilling the Academy and Fumiko-sensei had put into him, and found, somewhere in the middle of an exchange that had both of them moving faster than either had opened with, that holding his own against a blade-user this quick was going to cost him considerably more focus than the ground-softening trick alone could provide.

Time to actually work for it, then, he thought, and reached, carefully, for the deeper well of control three years of doubled elemental practice had built in him — not the fusion technique, still too unreliable to risk mid-match against a genuinely dangerous opponent, but the separate, individually mastered halves of his affinity, applied now with the kind of precision that came only from having failed at this exact combination dozens of times in the privacy of a chamber nobody else would ever see.

He drew a thin, controlled thread of water from the canteen at his hip mid-exchange — barely enough to notice, nowhere near a dramatic technique — and used it, in the space of a single desperate heartbeat, to slick the ground beneath his own back foot into something that let him pivot faster than his own natural footing would have allowed, closing the gap Genma's next strike had opened at exactly the wrong moment for him to react to it.

The blade caught Karan's shoulder instead of his throat, a shallow, stinging line that would leave a mark but nothing worse, and Karan's own counter-strike, driven by the sudden, unexpected burst of pivoted momentum, connected solidly with Genma's ribs hard enough to drive the air from his lungs in a single sharp exhale.

Both of them staggered back from the exchange at roughly the same moment, breathing hard, and for a long beat neither moved to close the distance again, each reading the other for exactly how much that last trade had actually cost.

"That's a new one," Genma said eventually, one hand pressed briefly to his ribs, grin still present despite the visible pain behind it. "Water-slick footwork mid-exchange. Nobody warned me about that either."

"Turns out that's the theme of the whole exam," Karan said, feeling the shallow cut on his shoulder sting with every breath, and found, beneath the pain, a kind of clear, focused satisfaction he hadn't expected a real fight to actually feel like. Not the story he remembered. Not a battle some old narrative had already decided the outcome of. Just his own three years, tested honestly, against an opponent who'd earned every single exchange the same hard way.

Genma's stance shifted, weight settling more fully onto his uninjured side, blade rising into a considerably more committed guard than he'd opened the match with. "Guess we find out which of us actually planned for the other option, then," he said.

Karan matched the shift, feeling the small, hard-won confidence of three years settle into something steadier than nerves, and readied himself for whatever the older genin intended to bring next.

End of Chapter 18

Coming in Chapter 19 — What the Water Wants

The match's decisive exchange, and a moment inside it that pushes Karan's control past anything he's tested even in the privacy of the Chamber.
