The arena in Suna, when Karan finally saw it in full, was nothing like the modest sand-floored exam hall stage two's written test had used. Tiered stone seating rose in a wide bowl around a broad, sun-baked fighting floor, banners marking sections reserved for visiting delegations from half a dozen villages, and even from the competitors' waiting area beneath the stands, Karan could feel the low, expectant hum of a genuinely enormous crowd settling into place.
"That's the Kazekage's box," Sae said quietly, following his gaze up toward a shaded platform positioned with clear sightlines to the entire floor, several other well-dressed dignitaries already seated near it. "And that one, with the leaf banner — that's ours."
Karan picked out the Konoha delegation without much difficulty, a cluster of formally dressed shinobi he didn't recognize individually, though the leaf-marked flak jackets made their allegiance plain enough. Somewhere in that cluster, he understood, sat people whose opinions of this exam's outcome would ripple outward into decisions well above a genin's usual concerns — alliances measured, reputations weighed, the kind of quiet political theater Fumiko-sensei had warned them about weeks earlier finally made real and immediate.
"Try not to think about the box too much," Fumiko-sensei told them, appearing at his shoulder with her usual unhurried calm, though something in her posture today read marginally sharper than her ordinary composure. "The floor doesn't care who's watching. Neither should you, once the match actually starts."
The bracket board went up an hour before the first match, eight names remaining from the original preliminary field, paired off into the tournament's opening round, and Karan found his own name a third of the way down the list, matched against a Konoha genin he didn't recognize by face but recognized, the instant he read the accompanying surname, with a jolt of cold, immediate unease that had nothing to do with the fight itself.
Shimura.
He knew that name. Not from any personal history, not from any classmate he'd crossed paths with at the Academy — Konoha's clans and notable families were numerous enough that plenty of surnames existed entirely outside his direct experience. But he knew, with the specific, unwelcome clarity of someone who'd read the whole story from the safety of an ending, exactly which shadowy corner of Konoha's political landscape that particular name belonged to.
Root. Danzo. An entire faction operating in the careful, deniable spaces between Konoha's official chain of command and whatever quiet, ruthless agenda its founder actually pursued underneath it.
This could mean nothing, he reminded himself, the same careful caution he'd applied to Kirikawa's name months earlier. Plenty of people share a clan name without belonging to whatever specific faction that name sometimes gets associated with. Don't assume the worst before you've actually seen anything to confirm it.
He held to that reasoning as firmly as he could manage, and found it held considerably less well the moment he actually laid eyes on his opponent during the pre-match formalities.
The boy was younger-looking than most of the remaining competitors, though something in his bearing made him seem older than his face suggested — a careful, controlled stillness that Karan recognized immediately as fundamentally different from Kaoru's over-formal clan discipline, or Tarou's methodical calm, or even Fumiko-sensei's professional composure. Those were all, in their own ways, expressions of a person still visibly present underneath the control. This boy's stillness felt, unsettlingly, like there was considerably less person left underneath it to express at all.
"Shimura Ren," the proctor announced, and the boy inclined his head with mechanical precision, offering no other reaction whatsoever — no nerves, no anticipation, nothing that read as remotely human in the way every other competitor Karan had watched fight so far had at least briefly betrayed.
"Namikaze Karan," the proctor continued, and Karan matched the formal bow, studying his opponent with every scrap of careful attention three years of training had taught him to bring to an unknown threat.
Root doesn't just recruit orphans and train them in secret, Karan thought, watching Ren's flat, unreadable eyes track his own movement with the same mechanical precision as everything else about him. It strips something out of them first. If the story I remember is even half accurate about how that faction actually operates, whatever's standing across from me right now has already had considerably more taken from him than any genin his age should have lost.
The realization sat cold and uncomfortable in his chest, layered uneasily over the straightforward tactical problem of an unknown opponent he still had to actually defeat. He'd spent this entire exam quietly relieved every time a name meant nothing to him, grateful for the freedom of facing people the story had never bothered to write down. This was the first time since Iwa's watchful Tsuchida that a name had meant something — and unlike Tsuchida, whose motives had turned out pragmatic and almost reassuringly ordinary once explained, Shimura Ren's presence in this arena felt like the first genuine, confirmed thread connecting Karan's careful, unwritten life back to the specific, dangerous currents the story he remembered had always warned him ran beneath Konoha's peaceful surface.
"Begin," the proctor called, and Ren moved.
There was no opening exchange of testing strikes, no careful probing rhythm the way Genma had approached their own match weeks earlier. Ren simply closed the distance with a flat, economical speed that Karan barely tracked in time to redirect the first strike, and the taijutsu that followed carried none of the individual style or personality Karan had come to expect from every other genin he'd faced — no favored stance, no habitual weakness to read and exploit, just precise, efficient, utterly impersonal technique executed with a consistency that felt less like a trained fighting style and more like a program running exactly as designed.
This isn't a genin testing an opponent, Karan thought, giving ground carefully, cataloging every strike with the same desperate attention he'd once given a chakra-paper test. This is a weapon executing a function. There's a difference, and it matters more than I want it to right now.
He caught the fourth strike on a redirected block, exactly as he had against Genma, and found the technique cost him considerably more effort against an opponent who adjusted his own follow-through with inhuman precision rather than the natural, readable hesitation every other fighter carried. Ren's counter came a half-second faster than Karan had braced for, and only a desperate, instinctive pivot — water-slicked footwork drawn reflexively from months of practice — kept the strike from connecting solidly.
"You're better prepared than most," Ren said, and it was the first thing he'd said in the entire match, delivered in a flat, affectless tone that made the words considerably more unsettling than any taunt could have managed. "That will not be sufficient."
Karan settled back into a ready stance, feeling the crowd's distant hum press down around the fight like weight, and understood, with a clarity that had nothing to do with the story he remembered and everything to do with the boy standing in front of him right now, that whatever this match actually cost both of them, it was going to demand considerably more than three years of careful, honest preparation had ever asked of him before.
