ELUX : TALES OF HAILS AND FAILS

*Chapter 7: The Hunters*

The red dots didn’t stop.

They swarmed across the map like ants, all of them pointing to one place. World-7B.

“They know,” Director Lin said. She killed the main screen. “We have maybe ten minutes before the first fracture opens here.”

Elux was still on the floor with his mom. Her hand was in his. The glow under his skin was gone, but he could feel it. Heat. Pressure. Like something was trying to get out.

His mom sat up slowly. She looked at the two moons through the glass. Looked at Seven’s gun. Looked at Elux’s face.

“You brought me into this,” she said. Not angry. Tired. “So tell me what this is.”

Elux opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

Seven answered for him. “Multiverse war, ma. And your son is the only one who can win it.”

The lights cut out.

Then came the sound. Like glass breaking, but in the sky.

A fracture. Right above the facility.

Black armor poured through. No faces. No sound except the hum of the void behind them.

“Nulls,” Seven said. He was already moving. “Defensive positions!”

The first wave hit the outer doors. They didn’t blow them. They erased them. The metal just wasn’t there anymore.

Elux stood. He felt different. Heavier. The soldier echo was still in him, but now something else was moving too. The runner. The one who survived the fire.

Director Lin shoved a weapon into his hands. Not a gun. A rod of black metal that pulsed with blue light.

“It won’t kill them,” she said. “Only you can do that now. This will just slow them down.”

“How?” Elux asked.

“You bleed,” she said. “And they follow the light.”

The first Null came through the doorway.

Time slowed.

Elux saw everything. The angle of its arm. The way the air bent around it. The path it would take in three seconds.

The soldier echo took the wheel.

Elux moved.

The rod came down. It didn’t cut the Null. It passed through it. And where it passed, the Null unraveled. Black armor turning to dust, then to nothing.

Another. And another.

Seven was shooting. Director Lin was calling orders. Medics were dragging people behind cover.

But Elux was in the middle of it, and with every Null he touched, more of him came awake.

The runner echo. He was moving faster than he could see. Dodging shots that hadn’t been fired yet.

The fire echo. Pain didn’t register. Burns from grazing shots healed in seconds.

He was bleeding light. It dripped from his hands, his eyes. And the Nulls turned toward it, like moths.

“Fall back!” Director Lin shouted. “He’s drawing them in!”

Elux didn’t hear her.

Because in the middle of the fight, he heard something else.

A voice. Not in the room. In his head.

Twelve voices.

_We’re here,_ they said. _We’re with you._

The battlefield Elux. The monk Elux. The old Elux holding his mom’s hand. All of them.

_Let us in,_ they said.

Elux didn’t fight it.

He opened.

Power crashed through him. Not pain. Not anymore. It was clarity.

He raised both hands.

The blue light that had been leaking from him exploded outward in a ring.

Every Null in the room froze. Then disintegrated.

Silence.

The fracture above was still open. More Nulls were coming through. But they stopped at the edge, like they hit a wall.

Elux stood in the center of the room. His clothes weren’t torn. His skin wasn’t cut.

But his eyes were glowing.

Seven lowered his gun. Slowly.

“Okay,” he said. “That was not in the training manual.”

Director Lin stared at the readings on her tablet. Her hands were shaking.

“Resonance at 400%,” she whispered. “You just merged three echoes. Consciously.”

Elux looked at his hands. The light was fading, but it was still there. Under the skin.

He could feel them now. The other versions. Not as memories. As power.

Strength. Speed. Durability. Instinct.

And something else. Something new.

He could feel the fractures. Like cracks in glass. All across the multiverse.

And on the other side of them, he could feel the Null King. Watching.

_So you lived,_ the voice said, inside his head. Faceless. Cold. _Interesting._

Elux didn’t answer.

He turned to his mom. She was standing now, leaning on a medic.

She looked at him. Really looked at him. At the light in his eyes.

“You’re not my little boy anymore, are you?” she asked.

Elux shook his head. “No, ma. I’m more.”

The facility shook. Another fracture was opening.

Director Lin ran to the console. “They’re not stopping. They’re sending more. They want you.”

Elux took a step forward. The floor cracked under his foot.

“Good,” he said. His voice didn’t sound like his own. It sounded like twelve voices speaking at once.

“Let them come.”

Outside, the sky split open.

And Elux smiled.
