Morning dew clung to every leaf.

Today…

The children would hunt.

Not for glory.

Not for food.

But for understanding.

Grandmother Wu handed each child three blunt arrows.

“You will return before sunset.”

“No one is judged by what they kill.”

“You will be judged by what you choose.”

The children looked at one another in confusion.

A hunt…

Where killing didn’t matter?

…

The forest soon swallowed them.

Some chased rabbits.

Others searched for birds.

One boy proudly climbed a tree, hoping to bring back a monkey.

Zhao Long walked alone.

His bow remained slung across his back.

He stopped beside a stream.

Tiny hoofprints dotted the muddy bank.

Fresh.

He crouched.

Then smiled faintly.

“They’re drinking earlier today…”

A few steps farther…

He noticed broken reeds.

Not broken by animals.

He quietly stepped away.

…

Hours later…

A shout echoed through the forest.

“Help!”

Zhao Long sprinted toward the sound.

He found two children trapped on a narrow ledge.

Below them…

A large black bear stood on its hind legs, roaring.

One child nocked an arrow with trembling hands.

“Don’t shoot!” Zhao Long said.

“But it’ll kill us!”

Zhao Long glanced around.

His eyes settled on a fallen beehive.

He picked it up carefully.

Then threw it-not at the bear-

But against a rock beyond the trees.

The sweet scent spread through the air.

The bear turned.

Sniffed.

And lumbered away toward the smashed hive.

The children stared in disbelief.

“You…

saved us.”

Zhao Long simply replied,

“No.”

“The bear chose the honey.”

…

By sunset…

The children returned to the village.

Some carried birds.

Others carried rabbits.

Grandmother Wu inspected each hunt.

When Zhao Long stepped forward…

His hands were empty.

The children laughed.

“He caught nothing!”

Grandmother Wu looked at him.

“What did you bring back?”

Zhao Long bowed.

“Three children.”

Silence.

The laughter faded.

One of the rescued boys stepped forward.

“He saved us…”

Twice.”

Grandmother Wu slowly nodded.

“Then your hunt was the most successful.”

The children lowered their heads.

For the first time…

They began to understand.

A hunter’s greatest skill…

Was not taking life.

It was knowing when life should be spared.

…

That night…

The moon reflected on the quiet waters of the Black Marsh.

Zhao Long sat beside the stream, carving a small wooden spear.

He paused.

A ripple crossed the water.

He looked up.

No one was there.

Only the reeds…

Swaying gently in the night breeze.
