Chapter 11 – The Core

Empire of Blood

The chamber opened gradually as Jack stepped forward, the transition from corridor to open space subtle but deliberate. The walls curved inward in a way that guided movement toward the center without forcing it, and the ground beneath his feet was smoother than anything he had encountered so far, worn down by repeated motion over time. It didn’t feel natural, and that alone told him what he needed to know.

This space had a purpose.

Jack slowed just enough to let his awareness extend outward. Blood Sense spread through the chamber, and the signals it returned were immediate and structured. Several lesser presences occupied the outer edges of the room, positioned in a way that limited approach angles, while one presence at the center remained still, dense and anchored in a way that set it apart from everything else.

He focused on it without moving any closer.

“Identify.”

The response came without delay.

[Core Guardian — Lv.9]

Type: Bound Entity

Traits: High durability, area control, sustained aggression

Weakness: Variable

Jack let out a slow breath as he took in the information. The level alone confirmed what the structure of the room had already suggested. This wasn’t another encounter to adapt to mid-fight. It was something designed to test whether he had already adapted enough.

The lesser creatures shifted first as he stepped further in, not attacking immediately but adjusting their positions to narrow his available movement. They weren’t reacting individually. They were part of the same system.

He didn’t give them time to complete it.

Instead of advancing directly toward the center, he angled toward the outer edge, targeting one of the lesser creatures before the formation could fully close. The scythe moved in a controlled arc, its reach allowing him to strike cleanly without committing his entire position. The blade connected across the creature’s side, and the bleed effect began immediately, weakening it before it could contribute properly.

He moved again the moment the strike landed, forcing the others to reposition instead of letting them collapse inward all at once.

The Guardian responded.

It didn’t rush blindly, but the speed it displayed when it committed was still faster than its size should have allowed. The distance between them closed quickly, and Jack was forced to adjust his angle rather than hold it. He brought the scythe up to intercept, but even with proper positioning, the impact pushed him back, his footing slipping slightly on the smoother ground.

The difference in strength was clear.

This wasn’t something he could overpower directly.

He adjusted immediately, shifting his focus away from direct confrontation and toward control of the space. The lesser creatures attempted to maintain pressure, but the initial bleed had already disrupted their timing enough that they couldn’t close cleanly.

That gave him just enough room to work.

He kept moving, cutting short arcs instead of full swings, forcing reactions rather than committing to damage. Each strike layered more bleed into the fight, not enough to weaken the Guardian directly, but enough to reduce the effectiveness of everything supporting it.

The Guardian adapted quickly.

Instead of chasing him outward, it began cutting angles, gradually forcing him back toward the center of the chamber. Jack felt the shift before it fully happened and adjusted his approach accordingly.

Instead of avoiding the center, he stepped into it deliberately.

That forced the Guardian to commit at the same time the lesser creatures were still recovering from earlier damage, breaking their timing again.

The clash was immediate.

Jack’s strike connected first, the scythe biting into the Guardian’s side, but the resistance was far greater than anything he had encountered before. The blade cut, but not deeply enough to matter on its own. The return strike came almost instantly, and although he avoided the full force, the edge of it caught his side and reopened earlier wounds.

Blood flowed again.

More than before.

He ignored it.

Pulling back would have given the Guardian space to reset.

Instead, he stayed close.

Within that range, the Guardian’s size worked against it. Its full strength couldn’t be applied cleanly, and its movements required more adjustment than his own. Jack used that, driving shorter, more precise strikes into joints and structural weak points rather than aiming for mass.

The bleed effect began to accumulate.

Slowly.

Not enough to weaken it significantly, but enough to introduce hesitation where there had been none.

The lesser creatures re-entered the fight.

One struck from behind, claws tearing across his back and forcing him forward again, closer to the Guardian than he wanted to be. The impact reopened more damage, and for a moment, the pressure of the fight shifted against him.

He didn’t retreat.

Instead, he stepped forward again, reversing the scythe mid-motion and cutting down the smaller creature before it could follow up.

Blood Draw triggered.

The effect was small, but immediate. It didn’t heal the damage, but it stabilized him just enough to continue.

That was all he needed.

The fight continued to stretch, each exchange building on the last. Sanguine Surge became harder to manage, its strain increasing with each activation, but it remained necessary. Without it, his reactions wouldn’t keep pace with the Guardian’s adjustments.

He felt the limit approaching.

Not suddenly, but steadily.

If the fight continued at the same pace, he would lose.

That made the decision simple.

He needed to end it.

The Guardian pressed forward again, its movements still strong but no longer as precise as before. The bleed had taken effect, creating small but consistent delays in its recovery.

Jack recognized one of those delays as it happened.

A slight shift in weight.

A fraction of a second longer than before.

He committed.

Sanguine Surge activated fully, pushing his body harder than at any point in the fight. The strain was immediate and sharp, but he didn’t pull back from it.

The scythe drove forward in a full arc, targeting the same weakened point he had been building toward the entire fight.

This time, the blade broke through.

The Guardian faltered.

Jack stepped in fully, closing the distance and driving the weapon into its throat with everything the Surge had left.

The resistance gave.

The guardian collapsed .
