Chapter 3 – Inside

Empire of Blood

The ground was harder than it should have been.

Not stone in the natural sense. Not packed earth either. Something in between, like the floor had been formed rather than grown.

Jack pushed himself up without hesitation, already scanning his surroundings.

The space stretched outward in uneven corridors, the walls dark and damp, faintly reflective in places where a thin sheen of moisture clung to the surface. The light was dim but constant, with no visible source. Shadows didn’t behave naturally. They clung too close to the walls, as if they didn’t fully belong to the space either.

The air carried a metallic scent.

Blood.

Not fresh.

Not old.

Just present.

Jack adjusted his stance, blade held low but ready.

This wasn’t the forest.

This wasn’t open ground.

This was controlled space.

Which meant something controlled it.

A faint system notification lingered at the edge of his awareness.

[Unstable Dungeon Detected]

[Instance Established]

No further information followed.

Of course.

He started moving.

Not quickly. Not slowly. Just controlled, each step deliberate, minimizing unnecessary sound while maintaining momentum. Standing still inside something like this served no purpose.

The corridor narrowed slightly ahead, curving out of sight. The walls pulsed faintly in places—not visibly moving, but subtly uneven, like something beneath the surface was shifting.

Jack noted it.

Didn’t react.

The first sound came from ahead.

Low.

Dragging.

He slowed immediately, weight shifting forward, center of balance ready to adjust in any direction.

The sound came again.

Closer.

Something scraped against the floor.

Then it emerged.

The creature moved into view from around the bend, its body lower to the ground than the scavengers from before. Broader. Heavier. Its limbs were thicker, built for impact rather than speed, but its movement wasn’t slow.

It was controlled.

Its head turned toward him.

The eyes were different.

Not just hostile.

Focused.

Jack tightened his grip on the blade.

No hesitation.

The creature charged.

Fast.

Too fast for something that size.

Jack stepped in at an angle instead of backing away, forcing the creature to adjust its line of attack rather than taking the impact directly. The timing was close—closer than he preferred—but it worked.

The blade struck across its side.

Resistance.

Thicker hide.

Not as clean as before.

The creature twisted immediately, its mass carrying through the motion as it slammed into him.

Jack absorbed part of the impact, the armor taking the worst of it, but it still drove him back a step. The force was real. Heavy.

Stronger than the scavengers.

He adjusted instantly.

This wasn’t a clean kill.

This required pressure.

The creature lunged again, jaws snapping toward his upper body.

Jack shifted left, then forward, closing the distance instead of retreating. He drove the blade downward, targeting the base of the neck where the structure looked weaker.

This time the strike bit deeper.

The creature recoiled, its movement breaking for just a fraction of a second.

Enough.

Jack didn’t waste it.

He followed with a second strike, then a third, each one more controlled than the last, forcing it down instead of trading blows.

The creature collapsed, its body convulsing once before going still.

Jack stepped back immediately.

Breathing steady.

Watching.

A message appeared.

[You have defeated: Burrow Hound (Lv.2)]

[Experience Gained]

He dismissed it without focus.

His attention stayed on the environment.

That had been stronger.

More durable.

Which meant escalation.

Expected.

Jack exhaled slowly, then paused.

Something was off.

Not the dungeon.

Him.

He shifted his focus inward, pulling up his status again.

The interface appeared instantly.

He scanned it quickly.

Then stopped.

There.

Under Class.

Bloodborne Warrior.

Two entries.

Unfamiliar.

Unused.

He hadn’t accessed them.

Not once.

“…Right.”

He had been fighting like he always had.

Ignoring what he had been given.

He focused on the first.

[Blood Sense — Passive]

Allows perception of active life signatures through blood presence within range. Scales with Perception.

Jack’s eyes shifted slightly.

That explained the feeling.

The subtle awareness.

He hadn’t noticed it because it felt natural.

The second ability followed.

[Sanguine Surge — Active]

Temporarily enhances physical output by accelerating blood flow. Increased strength and speed. Minor strain applied after use.

He read it once.

Then closed the interface.

No overthinking.

No delay.

He adjusted his grip on the blade again.

Now—

He had context.

A faint shift in awareness spread outward from him.

Subtle.

But present.

Something ahead.

Two.

Maybe three.

Further down the corridor.

Not guessing.

Knowing.

Jack moved.

This time with purpose.

The dungeon wasn’t just space.

It was pressure.

And now—

He could feel where it was coming from.

The corridor opened slightly ahead into a wider chamber. The floor dipped unevenly, creating shallow depressions filled with dark liquid that reflected the dim light in distorted patterns.

Movement.

Multiple shapes.

Lower to the ground.

Waiting.

Jack stepped forward.

Not rushing.

Not hesitating.

The first one lunged.

He activated the ability without thinking.

Sanguine Surge.

The effect was immediate.

His body responded faster than expected, muscles tightening, movement sharpening. The world didn’t slow—but his reaction to it improved.

He stepped inside the attack instead of avoiding it, the blade moving with more force than before. The strike landed clean, deeper than the last fight.

The creature dropped.

The second came from the side.

Jack turned, faster than before, intercepting it mid-lunge.

Controlled.

Efficient.

No wasted motion.

The third hesitated.

That was a mistake.

Jack closed the distance and ended it before it could commit.

Silence returned to the chamber.

He stood still for a moment, letting the effect fade.

The strain hit lightly. Not enough to slow him, but noticeable.

Manageable.

He adjusted.

The dungeon extended further ahead.

Deeper.

More pressure.

Jack looked forward to it.
