REMUS BENNET
The trip to Pasadena had been more enjoyable than he had hoped.
Lexie and him had simply walked around the town, and there was an old Victorian-esque shopping street in town which had fascinated them both.
Still, they were forced to drive back after midday, for they had a party to attend.
By the time he reached back home, he barely had enough time to shower and change.
Rue was ready as well, and with that, he drove towards Lexie’s place to pick her up.
She walked out of her room, and she was wearing the very dress he had bought for her earlier today.
It was a yellow dress that came up to her knees and had a belt that created some differentiation.
“Wow,” Rue added from the back as he opened the seat.
“You always were a gentleman,” and he had been so mesmerized by her that he had missed her mother standing in the back.
“Hey, Mrs. Howard,” Remus greeted her quickly, and she raised her wine glass in her hand.
“Treat her well, Remus, or you and I will have words,” she warned just as she had warned him when he had started dating Cassie, and he smiled as he closed the door.
“I will,” he answered back as he slid into the driving seat.
“Told you it’d look fire,” he added as Lexie blushed.
“Thank you,” and she looked into his eyes and leaned forward, the same as him, as they kissed each other, forgetting about the passenger in the back.
“Can you two drop me off first, before you start fucking,” Rue added in her deadpan voice, making them both jump back in an instant.
“Sorry,” Lexie apologized, and Rue shrugged.
“We’re late as hell,” Rue added, pointing towards her wrist.
“Save the make‑out session for the party,” and the two of them had a slight flush on their faces as he drove forward.
McKay’s family was out of town, and it was sort of the tradition at their school that if anyone’s parents were out of town, then they had to throw a massive party.
The driveway was full of cars, and he had not even pulled on the handbrake when Rue jumped out of the car.
“I am off,” and she was gone.
“Hey, wait,” but she ignored him completely as she rushed into the House.
The music was loud enough to reach the driveway, and the bass was so strong that he could feel its thrum even out here.
“We should go as well,” and before he could open the door, Lexie called him out.
“What’s up?” she said, and his head snapped towards her.
She seemed a bit nervous and hesitant.
“What is it?” he asked softly.
“Okay, you should know something before we go in,” and he closed the door once more.
“About what?” he asked, and she bit her lip nervously before she began.
She mulled over her words for half a minute before she blurted it out with a sigh.
“Maddie’s got her eyes on you,” and that was some revelation.
“Wait, seriously?” and he had never thought that he would catch her eye.
“Yes, in fact she was the one who wanted me to invite you to the party,” and that was smart of her.
“She asked me about you, and I told her a lie that you were already seeing someone,” and it did not bother him really.
Maddie Perez was beautiful, and only a fool would deny that.
She was also bat-shit crazy, and those were not his words.
He knew about her habits and preferences from the time he had dated Cassie.
“I have no interest in Maddie,” he assured Lexie, and she did not need to worry about her.
“Maybe, but if she realizes that we are together and I lied to he….”
“You don’t need to be afraid of Maddie Perez,” and he could handle her just fine.
“I can handle her,” and he had not been to a party in a long time.
“Let’s go,” and he jumped out of the car, opened her door, and led her through the crowd.
They passed by a few of his classmates until they reached the lounge.
He walked in, and immediately, he was greeted by a plethora of drunk classmates who screamed at him.
“Rockstar!” Fucking mental!”
He pushed himself through the crowd and spotted Fezco sitting there in the corner.
“I will get us some beer,” and Lexie walked towards the couch, as he grabbed two cans and joined her a few minutes later.
“I didn’t know you were coming to the party.” Fezco shook hands with him, and Fezco’s presence was standard at all their parties, for he was the source of goodies.
“I just thought it was time to take a break,” he answered, as he passed Lexie a can and slid down beside her.
“What about you? How’s business?” It had been some time since the two of them had met each other.
“Business is chill,” Fezco answered, taking a puff of his joint before his eyes finally landed on Lexie.
He had already met her once, when Remus had brought her to the shop with him.
“She your girl?” Fezco asked, and Remus turned his head and looked into Lexie’s eyes.
“Yeah, she my girl,” and he kissed her then, making the girl chuckle.
They separated a minute later, and she finally turned towards Fezco.
“Hi, I am Lexie,” and they shook hands.
“Fezco,” he responded, and she nodded.
“I know,” and everyone at their school was aware of him and his enterprise in one way or another.
“How can you be friends with him?” she whispered into his ear, not to offend his friend.
“It’s not much different than you being friends with Cassie’s friends,” he answered, and perhaps that was what friendship truly was.
Accepting everyone for what they were fully.
“I don’t see the adjacency,” she countered, and that was a mouthful.
“Adjacency!” he made a face at that; she chuckled, taking a sip of his beer.
“Who even says that at a party? No. Not even a party! Who even says that nowadays?” he began pretending to look around as she slapped his arm.
“Shut up,” she tried to make him stop.
“Maybe we should call the party police on you,” he answered, and Lexie chuckled as she grabbed his face.
“You can try,” and his hand traveled up her back, as their lips came together once more, and slowly he could feel the party fading away when suddenly a familiar voice forced them to break away.
“Lexie!” and they both pulled away in a blink, as their heads snapped towards the source of the shrill voice.
Cassie stood there, with Maddie right behind her.
“What are you doing?” Both of them had known that such a thing would happen.
“What do you think?” Remus countered as he met Cassie’s gaze, and she was lost for words.
Maddie, though, had her eyes narrowed as she stepped forward.
“So, that new girl he was dating was you,” she began, looking at Lexie, who shrugged.
“Bitch, you are insane,” Maddie added before Cassie finally found her words.
“You can’t date him,” and he could feel a crowd gathering.
“Why not?” Lexie asked.
“You know why,” Cassie countered.
“I don’t,” Lexie retorted, and Maddie raised her hand.
“I am more surprised that you chose her,” Maddie stepped forward, her posture accentuated her curves as she walked forward.
“I just figured you’d want someone more… exciting,” and there was a glint in her eyes.
Despite her offer, he shrugged as he pulled Lexie in.
“You see, I am rather fond of plain and boring,” and for all her faults, Maddie knew that the battle was lost.
Neither of them had any commitments to each other, so she simply smiled as he backed off.
“We will see how long that lasts,” and with that, he headed out towards the pool, not before casting a glance towards the kitchen where a shirtless Nate was sipping his beer with a rather rage-filled expression.
Their eyes met for a second, but the boy in question simply turned away as Cassie shook her head.
“We’ll see how long that lasts,” and with that, she stomped away, while Fezco grinned at him.
“Damn man, you got girls fighting over you,” he joked, and Lexie’s mood had been soured by this whole affair.
“Let’s go upstairs,” he offered after seeing her scowl, and she nodded.
So, they cut through the roaring crowd before they reached upstairs and found themselves in an empty room.
He kissed her as soon as the door closed behind him, but Lexie seemed hesitant.
So, he pulled back.
“What is it?” he asked a bit worriedly, and she did not answer at first.
“If it’s Maddie, you don’t need to worry about her,” and he may have rejected her advances, but he was certain that there was no bad blood here.
She finally met his gaze, and he saw that her eyes were a bit red and tearful.
“Plain and boring, huh?” she repeated his words sarcastically, and he had alarm bells ringing in his head.
“Is that what I am to you?” Lexie asked, and for a second he did not know what to say.
“I did not mean it like that,” he clarified hurriedly, but the damage was already done.
“I was not speaking about your appearance. I was just describing how good and healthy our relationship was,” but a part of him understood that his choice of words was not so good.
By now, she was crying, and he was very taken aback.
“Please, Lexie,” he implored as he grabbed her arms.
“I like you. I really do,” he assured her, and he wanted to kiss her so bad, but he was afraid that she would push him back, so he held back.
But he saw that his words had hurt her in a way that he could not quite understand.
She pushed away his arms and wiped away her tears.
“I want to go back,” she declared, and what could he say to that?
He stepped back and sat down on the bed as he took a deep breath, when suddenly he heard the music downstairs die down as the sound of glass and utensils hitting the floor tore through the house.
“Alright, fine,” he answered, and he had only agreed to come to this damn thing because of her.
“I will drop you off, but I have to find Rue first,” and he grabbed the keys out of his pocket and gave them to her.
“You can wait for me in the car,” and with that, he walked out of the room without saying anything else as he began his search for Rue.
The party had died down, and he noticed how the entire floor was quiet as a shirtless Nate stood holed up in one corner while Jules looked around angrily as blood ran down her arm.
“By the way, I am Jules,” she began as she walked towards the door.
“I just moved here,” she said, and then walked out of the party, leaving everyone silent for a few seconds before one of the boys shouted.
“Let’s get the music started,” and with that, the crowd went back to being obnoxiously loud, as he began looking around in search of Rue.
He did not find her, and so he walked up to Fezco.
“Yo, you seen Rue??” he asked.
“I spotted her going out,” he answered, and by then Lexie had slid out of the place as well.
Remus himself walked out and spotted her talking with the girl who had just caused the greatest ruckus.
He walked up to the duo.
“Rue,” he called out, and finally she turned towards him.
“Rue, your phone’s dead,” he spoke harshly, and she frowned and took the thing out of her pocket.
“Shit, it’s out of battery,” and it seemed to him that she had kept her promise as well.
“Come on, we are leaving,” and now she frowned.
“Already?” and he nodded.
“Yes,” and he offered her no further explanation.
“Wait,” Rue called him out before he could fully turn.
“Could you perhaps drop me off at her place?” she pointed towards Jules, who gave him a wave with her injured arm.
“Hi, I am Jules,” she greeted him, and he nodded.
“I know,” and he offered his own hand.
“I am Remus,” and she gave an exaggerated nod.
“I know, I listened to your song. It was pretty good,” and that was not a surprise.
“You should probably go to a hospital,” he said, pointing towards the bleeding.
“No. I will be fine. I have a first aid kit back at home,” and who was he to impose?
“She can’t bike back to her house like this,” Rue cut in.
“Plus, she will need help bandaging this thing,” and Rue blushed at his sister’s antics.
“I will be fine,” she interjected.
“She can come. We will put her bike in the trunk,” and Rue’s face lit up.
“But no funny business. You understand?” he warned, and Rue was already halfway to the driveway.
“I swear on your life,” and it took him a few minutes to get the bike into the trunk before he drove off.
Jules home came first, and if Rue and Jules noticed the strange silence in the car, neither commented on it.
He dropped them off first, before he finally reached Lexie’s home.
Neither of them had said a word to each other at all, and he tried to say something, but she was already out of the car by then.
“Goodbye,” she whispered as she rushed back to her place, while he rode back to his own house.
His mother was in the lounge as he walked in and frowned when she saw him.
“You are back already?” she questioned, and he nodded as he hung the keys.
“Where is Rue?” she asked.
“She is at a friend’s,” he answered and walked towards the room.
“Is everything okay?” she asked slowly, and he did not stop to answer back.
“Yes, it is,” and as soon as he reached his room, he fell down on the bed and refused to stand at all.
It had been a rather trying and tiring day.
He thought about Lexie and what had happened between them.
He knew that his choice of words was not the best, but was it truly such a grave thing?
No.
He concluded.
Lexie and he were old friends.
He was certain that he had made worse jokes in the past, yet for some reason she had taken his words way too harshly.
He wanted to text her, but stopped himself as he wondered if all of this had been a mistake.
“I shouldn’t have asked her out,” he whispered to himself as his phone buzzed.
‘Where r u?’ Elliot texted him.
‘Home,’ he answered.
‘What!
Why?’
‘Nothing!’
‘Whatever.
Check Twitter!
You are blowin up!’
And he frowned and quickly switched apps.
And suddenly he found himself bombarded by notifications.
He had set his account to private, so very few people could send a direct message to him.
Yet still, his inbox was overflowing, and he realized the reason rather quickly as he saw the trending list.
“Another_Love!” #Heartbreak King #Feels
And his song had gone viral.
No, this was not just viral.
This was something else.
He quickly opened up DistroKid, and his eyes blew up as he saw the numbers.
“Ten million….”
