“Luo Guang, between Raccoon City, Reach, and Silent Hill, which one would you choose to transmigrate to?”
It was a quiet afternoon.
In the college dorm, only Luo Guang and one of his “sons” were there.
The other two roommates had long since gone out shopping with their girlfriends, leaving just the two of them behind—one lying on the bed playing on his phone, the other sitting at the desk gaming on his computer.
Hearing his friend suddenly ask that, Luo Guang, who was sprawled on the bed scrolling through his phone, did not find it strange.
After thinking for a moment, he answered, “Raccoon City, I guess.
Relatively speaking, it’s safer.”
“Is that so?”
His friend’s voice suddenly turned extremely strange.
A hoarse, distorted sound rang right beside Luo Guang’s ear.
Luo Guang shifted his gaze away from his phone and toward the edge of the bed.
What entered his sight was his friend’s peeling skin, corpse-maggots writhing through black-red rotten flesh, and an eerie smile that made one’s blood run cold.
…
“Ah!”
Luo Guang, asleep in his own bed, jolted awake from the nightmare.
He flipped over and shot upright on the wooden bed, already drenched in sweat.
“I’ve been out of college for years already…
how am I still having this kind of nightmare…”
Luo Guang, who had long since entered the workforce, gently shook his head and took several deep breaths.
Just as he was about to lie back down and go to sleep again, his body suddenly froze.
All drowsiness vanished as he stared at the green quilt in his hands.
This isn’t my blanket…
and I’m not wearing pajamas either, but a black tank top I’ve never seen before.
And not only that.
Luo Guang raised his head and looked around.
He was not in the bedroom he knew so well.
The three cats that usually curled up beside him while sleeping were nowhere to be seen.
Instead, he was in a room he had absolutely no memory of.
There was not much furniture inside: a bed, a desk, and a wardrobe.
No extra decoration.
That was all.
Having just been startled awake and still not fully conscious, Luo Guang fell into confusion for a moment, unable to tell whether he was still dreaming.
“Protection system loading…”
Suddenly, an emotionless, androgynous voice rang out in Luo Guang’s mind.
Before he could even think about what those words meant, a burst of violent pain exploded through his head, forcing the Luo Guang who had been about to stand up right back onto the bed.
A certain curse exploded from Luo Guang’s mouth.
Before he could steady himself, he fell backward with the motion, eyes squeezed shut, both hands clamped tightly over his aching head as his entire body curled onto its side.
“Loading progress: 23.96%.”
…
“Scan complete.
Adaptee compatibility: 120%.
Conditions met.
Continuing load…”
…
His head ached terribly, yet every sentence rang out with crystal clarity in his mind.
The swelling pain only intensified, until Luo Guang lost all sense of the passage of time.
“System loading complete.
Welcome, Adaptee.”
Who knew how much time had passed.
Unable to trigger any kind of bodily protection mechanism to faint from the pain, Luo Guang had finally endured it.
His whole body was already soaked through.
With the loading complete, the pain in his head vanished in an instant as though it had all been an illusion.
Although he was covered in sweat, Luo Guang miraculously did not feel even the slightest fatigue anywhere in his body.
His stomach, however, chose a very inappropriate moment to start growling.
“What is the system?” Though he already had a few guesses in mind, Luo Guang still asked out loud.
“Protection System.
Full designation: Adaptive Evolution Protection System.
A biological systems program responsible for assisting the Adaptee in completing their own evolution.
The system relies on the Adaptee to provide processing power and energy.
Please pay attention to maintaining cranial health and sufficient nutritional intake.”
So it really is that legendary cheat, Luo Guang thought to himself, not saying it out loud.
Even so, the system still responded.
“This system is not a cheat.
This system is intended to assist the Adaptee’s evolution, coordinate the Adaptee’s physical development, and according to the Adaptee’s knowledge base, this system more closely resembles an auxiliary biological optical brain.”
Since the voice sounded directly in his head, Luo Guang also realized that as long as he formed the words in his mind, he could communicate with the system.
Thinking that, Luo Guang got out of bed.
Multitasking, he searched the unfamiliar room while asking in his mind, “What exactly does this ‘assistance’ mainly refer to?”
Judging from the system’s tone, it did not seem to be the kind of cheat system that could exchange for powerful items.
But no matter what, it was still a revolutionary creation.
If he wanted to make full use of it, Luo Guang urgently needed to understand its functions and make plans accordingly.
“First: digitization of the Adaptee’s physical attributes and skills;
Second: assistance in controlling the Adaptee’s body, increasing the precision and strength of movements while reducing stamina consumption;
Third: assistance with memory and learning;
Fourth: predicting and helping the Adaptee select an evolutionary path;
Other functions will unlock upon meeting the required conditions.”
“What are my current body stats—”
It seemed he had triggered a keyword.
The moment Luo Guang formed the thought of checking his physical data, the system had already processed it and projected the information before his eyes.
Adaptee ID: 00001s
Name: Luo Guang
Adaptability Rank: S-
Age: 25
Sex: Male
Luo Guang only glanced over the basic information before skipping past it.
The important part was what came next.
Strength: 7 (A standard male is 5.
This attribute is a composite of grip strength, explosive force, upper- and lower-body strength, and related factors.)
Agility: 7 (A standard male is 5.
This attribute is a composite of dexterity, flexibility, bodily reaction speed, jumping ability, and related factors.)
Endurance: 8 (A standard male is 5.
This attribute is a composite of lung capacity, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and related factors.)
Intelligence: 6 (A standard male is 5.
This attribute is a composite of thinking speed, IQ and EQ, memory, imagination, and related factors.)
Willpower: 10 (A standard male is 5.)
Special Ability: None
“So the standard value is 5.
Looks like I’m above standard across the board.” Luo Guang looked at his fairly decent numbers and could not help feeling rather pleased with himself.
All those years of discipline had not gone to waste.
“The upper limit of the human body is 12.
Exceeding standard values is easy, but breaking through the limit is difficult.
The higher the value, the harder each additional point becomes to raise.”
Just as Luo Guang was getting a little smug, the system dumped a bucket of cold water over him.
His rummaging through the drawer paused slightly when he heard that.
He curled his lips, then continued searching.
He had no intention of trying to argue with a machine-like system, and instead kept confirming its functions and some terms he did not understand.
“What do you mean by adaptability?”
“Adaptability refers to the degree to which one is compatible with this system.
At the same time, the higher an Adaptee’s adaptability, the more evolutionary paths they can choose from, and the more likely they are to surpass human limits and complete human evolution,” the system replied quickly.
“Human evolution?” Luo Guang did not understand.
How could his own evolution somehow represent the evolution of all humanity?
“If one individual evolves successfully, that proves humanity possesses the possibility of evolution.
Going from zero to one is difficult, but going from one to two is simple—just like the development of all kinds of human technology.
Detailed explanations and more questions can be addressed through the ‘Instruction Manual.'”
Through thought alone, Luo Guang brought up the suddenly added contents of the Instruction Manual in his mind and began reading it carefully.
At the same time, he continued asking, “Are there other Adaptees?”
Because there had been an ID number in the information, and because of what the system had just said, Luo Guang asked with a trace of worry.
There was a world of difference between one person possessing a system and a whole group possessing systems.
Things are precious because they are rare.
If many people had systems, then he would need to think very carefully about how to preserve his advantage.
“This system is the first to undergo adaptive installation.
According to current scans, there are no other Adaptees detected within range.
In addition, based on the Adaptee’s personality, the system immediately entered hidden mode upon activation and scanned to ensure there were no startup responses from other Adaptees.”
Although what the system said sounded reassuring, there was no telling whether new Adaptees would appear later.
And the way it said that made it feel as though it had been secretly observing him for a long time already.
“Keep scanning at intervals, then.” That was all Luo Guang could do—have the system stay alert.
While chatting with the system and confirming its capabilities, Luo Guang finally finished searching the entire room.
Fortunately, the room was not large.
It was a single-floor apartment with one living room, one bedroom, one kitchen, and one bathroom.
The furniture and personal belongings were also sparse, so Luo Guang did not need much time to finish searching it.
Biting off a corner of a chocolate bar, Luo Guang flipped through the items he had found on the dining table.
Then he suddenly noticed an employee ID card from a certain famous biotech company, causing him to stop chewing the bitter, hard-to-swallow chocolate and fall into silence.
“Umbrella Corporation.
Motherfucker!”
After a brief silence came several consecutive curses.
The infamously notorious company logo from that certain game franchise was printed very prominently in the upper-right corner of the ID card.
Aside from that, it only contained the employee’s identity information.
The name was also Luo Guang, same surname and given name, and the department listed was the Raccoon City branch of Umbrella Corporation’s Intelligence Department.
There was no photo attached, which honestly made it more convenient for Luo Guang to pass himself off under muddy circumstances.
Other than that, there was only a long employee serial number.
Luo Guang, who liked reading novels to relax outside of his workout routine, naturally understood by now that he had run straight into the whole transmigration setup.
And it was highly likely he had replaced an Umbrella employee with the exact same name, meaning that, by default, he stood on the opposite side of the Resident Evil protagonists.
But other than swearing his head off, Luo Guang had no especially good solution for the moment.
He could only take things one step at a time.
Although he had a system, it looked much weaker than those other systems with outright causality-bending powers.
In the end, though, whether anything could be accomplished would still depend on the person who possessed it.
Besides the ID card, Luo Guang also found a machine of unknown purpose.
He had no idea how to use it.
Even after putting on the headphones, no sound came through.
Since it was rather heavy, he did not move it onto the dining table.
There were weapons for self-defense as well.
In the drawer beneath the table holding the unknown machine, Luo Guang found a Beretta M92F pistol—also called an M9—and a telescopic dagger.
The pistol in Luo Guang’s hand had a matte finish and was fitted with a suppressor.
Its total length was 217 millimeters, its unloaded weight was 0.96 kilograms, its muzzle velocity was 333.7 meters per second, and its effective range was 50 meters.
Although Luo Guang did enjoy watching various military videos, most of it was only surface-level interest.
Most of the detailed information about the pistol had been told to him by the system.
According to the system’s description, a significant part of the vast amount of data loaded during installation consisted of various information and knowledge from this world.
In a sense, the system also counted as Luo Guang’s personal database.
Besides that, Luo Guang also found three matching 15-round magazines and one box containing forty 9×19mm Parabellum rounds.
Because of the environment he had grown up in, Luo Guang had no knowledge of how to use firearms.
Since he now had the opportunity, he set aside his investigation of everything else and immediately had the system teach him on the spot.
After eating a little, a bit of light exercise would help digestion anyway, Luo Guang thought.
The isosceles triangle shooting stance: simply put, the body faces the target directly, the feet are spread slightly wider than shoulder width, the knees are bent slightly to form elastic support, and the toes angle somewhat inward.
The chest is tucked and the shoulders relaxed, lowering the body’s center of gravity.
Both arms extend naturally.
The right hand grips the gun, while the left hand wraps around it, with the web of the thumb placed above and the palm turned inward around the trigger guard.
Alternatively, the palm may face upward to support the bottom of the grip, keeping the firearm level.
Although this shooting method allowed the shooter to maintain firing stability, it lacked some flexibility.
But for Luo Guang, who had little muscle memory to speak of, this was the most suitable method.
Therefore, after Luo Guang asked whether the system had any related shooting techniques, it immediately chose this beginner-friendly stance for target shooting.
Luo Guang practiced with the pistol for a few rounds of dry handling, while the system assisted by correcting his posture.
After spending around twenty minutes, he finally earned a passing mark from the system.
If something unexpected happened, at least he could now maintain a fairly standard posture while firing.
Checking the custom electronic wristband on his hand, made by Umbrella Corporation, he saw that the time was already close to 7:30.
Only then did Luo Guang realize that although he knew he had transmigrated into a world where biohazard outbreaks were as commonplace as eating a meal, he still had no clue where exactly he was.
At that thought, Luo Guang turned his gaze toward a notebook on the table.
He casually flipped it open—and felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead.
A name familiar to anyone with even a basic understanding of the Resident Evil game series came into view—Jill Valentine.
Still a little unwilling to accept it, Luo Guang flipped through the notebook again from side to side.
Its contents could basically be regarded as Jill Valentine’s daily life log.
What she did at each time of day was recorded in clear detail.
Even some of her phone conversations with other people were written down.
This room belonged to the person monitoring Jill Valentine.
And judging from certain information in the log, Luo Guang had already realized where he probably was: the city that was doomed to be nuked sooner or later—Raccoon City.
The terrain around Raccoon City was complex, surrounded by mountains on three sides, with only one route connecting it to the outside world.
But for Luo Guang, escaping the blast radius of that nuclear strike was the top priority.
With that in mind, Luo Guang had no intention of staying in the room any longer and immediately began packing up everything he had found that might be useful.
He tore off the Umbrella Corporation patch attached to the black backpack with Velcro and tossed it aside.
Without stopping, he stuffed bottle after bottle of water into the pack.
After hesitating for a moment, he also shoved in the notebook he had not yet finished reading.
As for the pistol and the loaded magazines, Luo Guang tucked them inside the inner side of a jacket.
The jacket had been placed beside the bed and had clearly been specially modified.
On the outside it looked like nothing more than an ordinary black jacket, with no decorations at all, giving off a cool, understated impression.
But on the inside, it had fitted slots for a pistol and pistol magazines.
Naturally, there was also an inner pocket for carrying other things.
Aside from the pistol, Luo Guang had also found a telescopic dagger with the same matte finish.
Since the dagger was not large, he simply slipped it straight into his pants pocket instead of putting it into the black jacket’s inner pocket.
That way it would be easier to pull out and use at any time.
Once he had finished packing, Luo Guang checked his gear once more to make sure nothing on him would interfere with his movement.
Just as he was about to push the door open and leave the room, a crash rang out through the entire apartment building.
The whole building shook violently, as though it were about to collapse.
A strange roar sounded immediately afterward.
Then one of the walls in the room was punched through by some gigantic humanoid.
Luo Guang did not react at once.
Instead, he just stood there with his mouth half-open, utterly dumbfounded, watching that giant fist withdraw back through the hole it had made.
It’s not really mandatory—I’ll eventually upload all the chapters here—but it helps a lot in supporting me and allows me to dedicate more time to it.
