Luo Guang had his reasons for telling those two about Nemesis’s target and Nikolai’s real position.

Both of them belonged to Umbrella’s U.B.C.S., which conveniently placed them on the same side as Luo Guang, this “intelligence operative.”

And judging from the way Delta Platoon leader Viktor treated him, there was already a certain foundation of trust between them.Full novel: Evolution Begins with Resident Evil — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Only under those conditions did Luo Guang’s information stand a chance of being believed.

If, on the other hand, he had told Jill, she would have immediately started questioning his identity and refused to believe his intel.

Luo Guang had no ill will toward Jill, but their relationship was nowhere near the point where he would rack his brains trying to convince her.

It could not be helped.

The moment Luo Guang transmigrated here, he and Jill were placed in naturally opposing positions.

Even if he had revealed his identity from the very beginning, would Jill really have believed that an Umbrella intelligence agent had suddenly grown a conscience and decided to hand over such important information?

After all, anyone with access to that kind of information had to occupy at least a certain rank within Umbrella.

Returning to the matter of this “insurance” job Luo Guang had taken on—

Was Umbrella’s Luo Guang some kind of operative who could both talk and fight?

Why the hell would they send me to do something this dangerous?!

Although, in Carlos’s and Viktor’s eyes, Luo Guang had seemed to accept the task very calmly, the truth was that he was nowhere near as strong or composed as he looked.

It had already been nearly four hours since he arrived in this world.

The exhilaration brought by obtaining the system had long since faded, leaving behind only uncertainty about the future.

After leaving the subway train, Luo Guang sat by the ticket window in the station, feeding 9mm rounds one by one into the Glock 17’s magazine as he thought things over.

The system was not especially powerful, but it undeniably played a huge role for Luo Guang in Raccoon City.

At the very least, when facing ordinary zombies, Luo Guang could now deal with them with ease.

But in the earlier fight against Nemesis, if the system had not briefly taken control of his body to dodge that sweeping tentacle strike, he would probably already be seriously wounded—then unsuccessfully treated—and “peacefully” dead.

Even with the system, his odds against Tyrant-type bio-weapons were still far too low.

If this world really is one based on the Resident Evil games, then after the Raccoon City biohazard, bioterror incidents around the world will become frighteningly frequent.

If I don’t have enough strength to protect myself, that just won’t do.

As Luo Guang thought that, the system naturally read his mind.

As a system bound to an Adaptee, it could alter Luo Guang’s emotions by regulating his hormone secretion and the like, but it did not do so.

As long as Luo Guang remained within normal human limits and lacked heavy weapon support, then yes—he really would have a hard time defeating Tyrant-class bio-weapons that were resistant to most small arms fire.

At the current stage, the system had no good answer to that either.

After all, it existed only as support.

Whether evolution ultimately succeeded would still depend on Luo Guang himself.

Luo Guang did not stay downcast for long.

After loading the magazine and putting the remaining loose rounds back into his backpack, he pulled himself together, gripped his gun, and followed the route Jill had taken out of Central Street Subway Station.

There were not many obstacles along the way that he could not handle.

With the system’s help, Luo Guang did not lose his bearings as he headed toward the substation, following the trail Jill had left by killing zombies along the route she had already taken.

After getting the short knife, Jill had clearly preferred to deal with ordinary zombies using melee weapons.

Looking at the wounds on the truly dead zombies lying on the ground, Luo Guang thought that over.

Because Jill had mostly used close-range methods to eliminate her enemies, other zombies had not gathered in response to gunfire, which made Luo Guang’s trip here go very smoothly.

“Kendo Gun Shop.” Luo Guang looked up at the shop sign in front of him.

The name “Kendo” came from the surname of the gun shop’s owner, Robert Kendo.

When the Raccoon City biohazard broke out, Robert Kendo had distributed the weapons in his shop to the surrounding neighbors, saving a lot of people during the first wave of the outbreak.

So at the moment, the gun shop’s front door stood wide open, yet from the outside it did not look as though it had been smashed up or looted clean.

Looks like all the good stuff’s already been taken.

That was what Luo Guang thought, but right then, part of the street looked as though it had suffered a gas explosion and collapsed inward.

There were quite a few zombies across the gap and down in the pit, which meant Jill clearly had not gone that way.

Fair enough.

Luo Guang himself was also worried about being attacked while climbing down and back up.

Since there happened to be an unlocked shop right next door, and because most storefronts in the good old Land of Freedom usually had a rear exit or a loading passage, it might be worth going inside and trying his luck.

Thinking that, Luo Guang did exactly that.

There was no one in the gun shop, but faint sounds came from behind an iron door.

Luo Guang remembered Robert Kendo and his daughter’s situation fairly clearly, so naturally he had no intention of disturbing them.

Since the owner was still inside, Luo Guang did not bother softening his footsteps.

He cleared his throat once, just to signal that someone had arrived.

He could hear movement from behind the iron door, but the person inside obviously had no intention of opening it.

If anything, they were putting themselves on guard against whoever was outside.

There seemed to be a small supply of vaccine at the hospital, but Luo Guang had no intention of telling Kendo that.

First, the two of them did not share that sort of relationship.

Second, because of his wife’s death and his daughter’s infection, Kendo had already sunk into obsession.

In the final hours of his daughter’s life, Kendo had already decided what his own ending would be.

He was not going to carry his daughter—who was on the verge of turning into a zombie—off in pursuit of some vague and uncertain hope.

And if Kendo failed to find a cure, he might well end up resenting Luo Guang instead.

Better not to interfere.

Naturally, the gun shop had been swept clean.

Luo Guang gave it a quick look, saw nothing useful, and soon passed through Kendo Gun Shop’s back exit, continuing on toward the substation.

Bang.

Bang.

After leaving Kendo Gun Shop and circling around the collapsed road through an alley, Luo Guang continued forward and soon reached an area that looked like some kind of residential community.

Not long after, he vaguely heard two gunshots in quick succession.

The sound was similar to his own Glock 17—probably a gun of the same family.

Jill?

Luo Guang immediately ran toward the sound.

And there, near a neighborhood basketball court, he saw Jill being slowly surrounded by several zombie dogs.

Their bodies were rotting all over, some with yellow-white leg bones exposed.

Several tentacle-like things had torn through their flesh and were waving about aimlessly.

Their eyes were milky white, yet they still tracked Jill’s position with uncanny precision.

Like a pack of hunting hounds, the zombie dogs did not recklessly rush in and die under Jill’s gun.

Instead, they started spreading out, preparing to encircle her.

Jill clearly understood what they were trying to do, yet she also refrained from moving rashly.

If the zombie dogs all stayed clustered together and chased her as one, it would actually be harder for her to pick them off one by one—and much easier to expose her own weak points to them.

Jill was not motionless, though.

Her left hand drew the short knife from her waist.

At the same time, she spotted Luo Guang in her line of sight, gun in hand, and gave him a slight nod.

Just before the zombie dogs completed the encirclement and launched their attack, two more shots rang out.

They came from Luo Guang’s Glock 17, which he had already brought up into a firing stance.

His targets were the zombie dogs flanking Jill on either side.

There were zombie dogs between Luo Guang and Jill as well, but Luo Guang had little confidence in his marksmanship, so he placed his targets on the dogs to Jill’s sides instead.

Faster to react than the other zombie dogs, the muzzle flash from Luo Guang’s first shot acted like a starting signal.

Jill moved.

She burst toward Luo Guang.

Compared to Luo Guang, Jill was fairly confident in her aim.

And since the zombie dogs were lower to the ground, she only had to angle her gun slightly downward.

Against the zombie dogs blocking the way between her and Luo Guang, she was practically firing with the muzzle pressed against their heads.

Naturally, she did not miss.

Jill did not slow down.

In Luo Guang’s eyes, it looked as though she had casually blown away a zombie dog on the way to breaking through toward him.

It looked cool as hell.

That zombie dog did not even react in time.

A moment ago it had been the hunter—how had it suddenly become the prey?

It had no chance to counterattack.

With a yelp, and before its body had even fully hit the ground, Jill had already leapt over it and regrouped with Luo Guang.

Taking advantage of surprise, they killed one and wounded another.

After that, Luo Guang did not continue firing, instead waiting first for Jill to join up with him.

In that flash of action, Jill and Luo Guang came together.

The other zombie dogs also reacted, launching their ambush and charging after Jill from behind.

“Nice,” Luo Guang praised.

“Thanks.”

After regrouping, Jill answered him, stepping slightly aside to clear his line of fire, then immediately raised her gun and shot.

The instant Jill moved clear, Luo Guang followed up at once.

He aimed at the zombie dogs charging straight through the narrow passage between the abandoned vehicles.

Those enemies had no room to dodge, and Luo Guang, now properly set, naturally would not waste such a chance.

In just a couple of shots, he put one of them down.

The dog in front fell and tripped the one behind it before that second one could react in time.

But because the head of the tripping dog was moving unpredictably after it stumbled, Luo Guang did not shift his aim onto it.

Instead, he targeted the zombie dog that leapt up to clear the “traffic accident” in front of it and fired three shots. This chapter was taken from g.com without permission.

Once the dog was in the air, the trajectory of its head became much easier to predict.

Since Luo Guang’s hit rate on moving targets was still poor for the time being, he chose to fire a quick three-round string—and successfully killed the jumping zombie dog.

The two of them had an unexpected sense of coordination.

Without exchanging a single word, Jill saw Luo Guang take aim at the zombie dogs between the vehicles, so she shifted her own focus to the ones sprinting and leaping across the tops of the cars.

Whenever one jumped, that was Jill’s cue to strike.

To make sure they truly killed their targets, the two of them fired a fair number of rounds.

Even so, two zombie dogs on the left and one on the right still managed to break through, closing to less than five meters from Luo Guang and Jill.

Jill, who stood on Luo Guang’s left, fired three more shots in quick succession, but that only stopped the pounce of one zombie dog.

The other one, drool dripping from its jaws, lunged greedily at Jill.

At the critical moment, Jill bent and dropped low, tossing aside the Glock 19 in her right hand.

With the short knife in her left, she drove it upward into the zombie dog’s neck, then used both arms to guide the momentum of its leap and fling the creature off to the rear left.

Bang!

Just as the zombie dog was about to get back up, a shot rang out.

Jill, gripping the Glock 19 she had dropped a moment earlier with both hands, fired the last round remaining in the chamber.

Straight between the dog’s brows.

Jill turned her head to check on Luo Guang’s side.

Only one zombie dog had broken through on the right, but because it was moving at high speed, Luo Guang chose not to conserve ammunition.

The instant it jumped, he rapidly squeezed the trigger again and again, dumping the pistol’s rounds into the zombie dog while it was airborne.

One bullet struck the joint of its left foreleg, causing it to stumble badly on landing.

It rolled off the car roof and fell in front of Luo Guang.

The zombie dog tried to rise—and Luo Guang’s last bullet struck it in the head, ending it on the spot.

Several seconds passed in silence.

Only after confirming there were no signs of any other zombie dogs did Luo Guang finally let the tension leave his body.

He exhaled softly, then turned to Jill—who looked ready to ask something—and said first, “This place isn’t safe.

Let’s get out of here first.”

Although the battle had not lasted long, the two of them had fired guns here after all.

Luo Guang was worried the gunshots would attract zombies—or certain bio-weapons many times more terrifying than zombies.

Jill understood what he meant and nodded.

Then, while changing the magazine in her weapon, she walked toward the zombie dog she had killed, preparing to retrieve the short knife lodged in its neck.

Seeing that, Luo Guang did not move off immediately.

He scanned the surroundings.

Perhaps because this place had been the zombie dogs’ territory, he did not see any zombies for the moment.

So he pulled out his loose rounds as well and started reloading the single magazine for his Glock 17.

Along the way here, he had already gone through about two magazines’ worth of ammunition.

That box of 9mm rounds he had taken from the S.T.A.R.S.

safe house was now nearly empty.

“Five, six, seven…”

Seven rounds left?

Luo Guang casually tossed away the now-empty 9mm ammo box.

“Come with me.

I know a shortcut.” Jill knew Raccoon City’s layout much better than Luo Guang did.

She quickly finished reloading, turned around, and called to him.

“I’m done too.” Luo Guang inserted the magazine, chambered a round, and only then lifted his gaze from the Glock 17.

He had just turned to answer Jill when, from between the pile of cars to his right, a zombie dog suddenly shot out straight at him.

The system had already reacted, but Luo Guang’s body still lagged half a beat behind.

The gun was in his right hand.

By the time he managed to bring it toward the zombie dog, he could already clearly see its hideous face and smell the sewer-like stench coming off it.

Thud.

The zombie dog slammed directly into Luo Guang’s right arm, knocking his Glock 17 off line.

“Tch!” Luo Guang’s face darkened in irritation.

His right hand followed through with the force of the impact instead of resisting it, and with one hard swing, he smashed the zombie dog off to the side.

Luo Guang was just about to raise his gun and fire when Jill—who had already reacted but had held off shooting because the zombie dog was too close to Luo Guang—fired the instant Luo Guang knocked it away, killing it on the spot.

Seeing that, Luo Guang let out a breath and looked down at his right arm.

Through the three matching tears in his sleeve, three bloody claw marks were faintly visible underneath.

It’s not really mandatory—I’ll eventually upload all the chapters here—but it helps a lot in supporting me and allows me to dedicate more time to it.
