After searching the notable areas on the second floor of the east wing, Luo Guang followed the corridor and safely reached the rooftop.

Without him noticing, a light drizzle had begun to fall.

Pulling open the door from the corridor to the rooftop, Luo Guang narrowed his eyes slightly and swept his gaze across the area.Full novel: Evolution Begins with Resident Evil — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The rooftop was not small.

There was a large circle with an equally large H inside it—a helicopter landing pad—with wire fencing around the edges.

On the other side, if one looked up along the wall, there was an antenna.

To Luo Guang, it had quite a bit of old-school charm.

His black jacket had no hood, so he could only walk through the drizzle to the base of the antenna.

There he found a large box.

Opening it and looking inside, he saw a red light glowing.

So that meant the box still had power, but its relay function was cut off?

Luo Guang did not understand electrical work, so to be safe, he pulled out the walkie-talkie, switched it on, and pressed the transmit button twice, leaving about a second between presses.

“Shh…

beep…

shh…

beep…”

He did not have to wait long.

The same two soft bursts of static came from the walkie-talkie in response.

“This is Luo Guang, over.”

“This is Marvin, received, over.”

After the proper little routine, Luo Guang began reporting the rooftop situation to Marvin.

“Right.

There’s a red indicator light on.”

When Luo Guang spoke, he held the transmit button down.

Releasing it let him receive Marvin’s signal on the same channel.

“There should be another box inside.

You can open that plastic latch by hand.

Check there first.”

Through the monitor, Marvin could see Luo Guang, though the image quality was grainy enough to resemble mosaic blur, so Marvin could only bring up a basic maintenance manual on the computer and guide him while reading from it.

When he heard Luo Guang say the box still had a lit indicator, Marvin let out a sigh of relief.

That meant the damage was still within an acceptable range.

If none of the lights inside the box had been on, they could basically have given up on repairing it.

“Opened it.”

Only after confirming that the latch really was plastic did Luo Guang pop it open.

“Ah…”

The moment he saw what was inside, he froze for a second.

A fuse again, right?

This has to be that bastard chief’s handiwork, doesn’t it?

Luo Guang’s anger toward the chief deepened yet again.

True, he had no proof it really was the chief.

But aside from that inside man, who else would do something this rotten?

If they were going to sabotage it, why not just smash the whole thing?

Why deliberately steal a single fuse and leave it at that?

Luo Guang raised the radio.

“Marvin, one fuse is missing.”

“That’s bad.

We’re not going to find a matching fuse that quickly.” Marvin had only just finished feeling relieved, and Luo Guang’s next sentence sent him right back down to earth.

If a fuse had burned out, that would still be normal.

But if a fuse was simply gone, then nine times out of ten it had been removed by someone on purpose.

Just like Luo Guang, Marvin’s first suspect was the police chief, who had been constantly disappearing whenever the crisis broke out.

The chief’s office was also on the second floor of the east wing, which made it convenient for him to do something like this.

As for motive, Marvin himself still did not know.

“Didn’t the east wing already lose power?” Hearing Marvin fall silent, Luo Guang assumed he was discouraged because finding a replacement fuse would be difficult.

So Luo Guang quickly thought of robbing Peter to pay Paul and asked, “Is the main breaker box over there built in a similar way?”

Hold on.” Marvin pushed aside his suspicion, unsupported as it was, and immediately started searching for the relevant information on the computer.

He did not keep Luo Guang waiting long.

“The breaker box on the east side has a slightly different structure, but the fuse specifications are the same.

If any of those still work, they can be used here.”

Marvin switched to the camera feed, paused, then added, “That breaker box is surrounded by a bunch of zombies.

It’s in the corridor you went through after entering the east wing—directly across from the left-side door of the East Office, beside the vending machine.”

“Ah…” Luo Guang froze too after hearing that, realizing that without noticing, he had dug himself a neat little pit to fall into.

“Oh.

Not a big problem.”

He thought of a solution quickly enough.

It was not that he wanted to put on another one-man zombie massacre.

Marvin still had a decent amount of ammunition left on his side, but not enough to clear every zombie, and Luo Guang had no idea whether, like Leon and Jill in the games, he would be able to keep finding bullets all over Raccoon City.

Better to conserve what he had.

Besides, the first-floor windows were already broken.

Aside from the main entrance, the east and west side entrances had both fallen, and there was no stopping zombies from entering the station anymore.

Firing earlier had been an accident—really, a mistake.

So Luo Guang did not want to start shooting again and lure even more zombies into the police station.

“You’re not thinking…” Marvin trailed off, apparently recalling the way Luo Guang had fought the zombies earlier and seriously suspecting the man had an unhealthy fondness for violence.

“No.” Luo Guang could not help laughing bitterly.

Just what kind of person do I look like in Marvin’s eyes now?

He explained, “I’m planning to lure those zombies into the East Office.”

Marvin knew the east wing layout well.

With only that brief explanation, he immediately understood Luo Guang’s plan and could not help saying it was a good one.

The idea was simple: Luo Guang would use movable objects inside the East Office—chairs, filing cabinets, and the like—to create a funnel or obstacle course.

Then he would open the left-side door and lure the zombies inside, vault over the desks to the other side, exit through the East Office’s right-side door, run along the corridor back around to the left-side entrance, and shut the door from outside.

Marvin thought it was a solid plan, though there were still a few things that needed confirming.

After working the computer a few more times, Marvin spoke over the radio: “Because of the gunshots, more zombies have come in through the broken windows, but they’re all jammed at the far end of the corridor.

Since you left the first floor, they’ve lost your scent and have started spreading out again.

“After you lure the zombies and head down the corridor toward the left side, watch both directions at the T-junction.

When you shut the door, you’ll probably still have to fight your way through some of them.”

Having seen the way Luo Guang handled ordinary zombies, Marvin was not worried that he could not deal with them.

Even if there were a lot, as long as he had room to kite them and a way to retreat, he could finish them off eventually.

So Marvin did not bother repeating things like be careful all over again.

“Mm…

So the zombies are still mostly concentrated on the left side of the east wing for now?” Luo Guang asked while thinking things through.

What if I make noise in the corridor, draw them into the right side of the east wing, and have them enter from the East Office’s right door instead?

No, that would not work.

Once he got the fuse, he still had to use the stairs on the right side of the east wing to get back to the second floor.

He would still have to deal with the horde.

For the moment, Luo Guang could not think of a better method.

He would just have to see what the situation looked like when the time came and rely on his own ability to adapt.

Marvin answered as well: “Yes.

One, two, three…

judging by the monitor feed, the corridor on the left side of the East Office has about ten or so zombies in it, definitely a two-digit number.

There are quite a few at the other end of the corridor too, but they’re only wandering around near that side and aren’t moving toward the East Office’s left-side door.”

Marvin tried his best to describe the corridor conditions clearly.

The corridor itself was not especially wide.

With ten or so zombies in it, it already looked pretty packed.

But if Luo Guang had to, he could always lure them out in small groups and deal with them that way.

If the plan worked safely, he did not mind using that kind of slow, “stupid” method.

“We’ll just have to play it by ear.”

Things in Raccoon City changed by the second.

Plans could never keep up with reality, so Luo Guang stopped dwelling on it and turned to leave the rooftop.

…

The trip back was uneventful.

Luo Guang returned to the East Office.

He had talked about setting up a funnel, but in practice that just meant dragging chairs, filing cabinets, and other office furniture into positions that blocked off some of the interior routes. Visit novelping . com for the full chapter.

He did not deliberately try to stay quiet, allowing the sounds he made to gradually draw the zombies back toward the East Office’s left side.

“Have the zombies gathered?” Luo Guang asked over the walkie-talkie.

From the increasingly dense, continuous pounding on the door and the smacking at the office windows, he already knew the zombies had gathered exactly as he intended.

“They’ve gathered.

The right side is still clear, though, so you can start the plan,” Marvin reported promptly, keeping an eye on the various corridors of the east wing.

“Received.

I’m turning off the radio now.”

After saying that, Luo Guang did not wait for a response.

He switched the walkie-talkie off and clipped it back onto his belt.

He took a few deep breaths, loosened up his limbs, and got moving.

He yanked open the left-side office door of the East Office with one hand, then immediately backed away without hesitation.

The zombies that had already been packed together outside shoved and surged their way in.

Luo Guang avoided the door panel swinging inward and the classic zombie pounce that followed.

For the current Luo Guang, ordinary zombies were already child’s play—as long as he did not let himself be surrounded by too many at once.

That was exactly what his plan was meant to avoid, so he kept himself one hundred percent focused and did not dare relax in the slightest.

Smelling and seeing Luo Guang, fresh prey, the zombies practically lit up with joy and began cramming themselves into the East Office.

Half the plan went smoothly.

The only problem was that aside from the zombies crowding the doorway, the ones at the office windows kept stupidly slapping at the glass.

Looking through the blinds under his flashlight beam, Luo Guang could barely make out the figures flailing outside the windows—but they just would not move.

Lazy as hell.

Forget it.

Seeing that no more zombies were entering from the doorway, and that the ones already inside had been blocked, tripped, or stepped on because of the tables, chairs, and cabinets, Luo Guang stopped caring about those idiots still smacking the windows outside.

He immediately exited through the office’s right-side door and ran along the corridor toward the opposite end of the East Office.

To avoid getting jumped at corners, Luo Guang always gave the left wall a wide berth and rounded the corners in a broad arc.

After two turns, he reached the corridor outside the East Office’s left-side entrance.

Because the zombies were all busy slapping the office windows, Luo Guang kept hearing smack, smack, smack, which conveniently masked his own footsteps.

He had now come up right behind them, and the zombies were still immersed in their window-smacking obsession, giving Luo Guang a perfect opening.

With the telescopic dagger he had already grown thoroughly proficient with, Luo Guang began opening holes in the heads of those lazy, brain-dead zombies one by one.

Even when some failed to cooperate, he could still make them behave.

And in the end, with the sound of the door shutting, the plan was complete.

Dealing with ordinary zombies really doesn’t feel difficult anymore, Luo Guang thought.

Right after evolving, he had still felt a trace of tension toward ordinary zombies.

But after that battle in the east wing, he was beginning to suspect that as long as his stamina held out, he could still fight even if surrounded.

“That is because the Adaptee’s current capabilities are overwhelmingly superior to ordinary zombies,” the system said.

“Originally, these standard zombies were already less dangerous than an average adult human.

It is only their lack of pain and fear that allows them to psychologically crush those seeing them for the first time.”

That actually made sense.

With the system putting it that way, Luo Guang finally grasped the key point.

Perhaps back when the very first Resident Evil game had been released, everyone had felt real fear toward the zombies in it—especially that famous over-the-shoulder turn-and-smile scene.

But as humans became more familiar with zombie films and zombie games, the fear of zombies gradually weakened, to the point that people started saying all fear came from insufficient firepower.

And that had been exactly the key that allowed Luo Guang to survive the early stage—to adapt to this world so quickly.

No wonder ordinary zombies in later games and movies kept getting stronger.

Smiling bitterly, Luo Guang pulled all the fuses from the breaker box on the first floor.

He would take them back and test them one by one to see which still worked.

The trip back to the rooftop was smooth as well.

Under Marvin’s guidance, Luo Guang tried the second fuse, pulled the switch, and finally turned the red light green.

“The green light’s on.

Is it working now?” Luo Guang asked.

“It can receive more signals, and from farther away too.” Marvin tried contacting a distant communications post, confirmed that it worked, and replied, “Good.

You can come back now.”

“Received.”

After answering, Luo Guang placed the unused fuses directly into the antenna control box on the rooftop, then shut the box and prepared to return to the main hall.

Once the exchange ended, Marvin lowered the radio.

Something was moving on the monitor outside the door.

It’s not really mandatory—I’ll eventually upload all the chapters here—but it helps a lot in supporting me and allows me to dedicate more time to it.
