Come to think of it, Edward never seemed to have been favored by the Goddess of Luck growing up.
Well, except for this transmigration.
But the more that was the case, the more it suggested he had used up all the good luck he had saved up before.
Edward believed in the conservation of energy, and he considered luck to be a form of energy.
Edward naturally assumed that nothing that good would happen to him for a while.
At least, things wouldn’t unfold as he expected…
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
Visibility ahead was already quite low, and just as Edward was hesitating about whether to turn back, the cave suddenly trembled violently.
In the almost pitch-black distance, Edward could only vaguely see a massive silhouette writhing frantically.
“Is that… an Onix?”
It’s not common to see a Pokémon with such a massive body, and given it was in a cave and elongated, the answer couldn’t be more obvious.
An Onix, huh…
Edward’s expression was a bit strange, and he felt a bit uneasy.
However, his feet moved before his mind caught up.
Regardless, the Onix’s roar was filled with intense pain.
As someone who deeply loves Pokémon, since he had encountered it, he naturally couldn’t just sit idly by.
Tap, tap, tap!
Edward jogged quickly, but he was still a few seconds too late.
Boom!
The Onix seemed to have reached its limit; its sturdy body could no longer support its single-horned rock head, and it crashed heavily right in front of Edward.
Uh…
is it faking an injury?
Edward looked around, but unlike the situation with the Tyrogue earlier, he didn’t see any Pokémon bullying another.
However, he could clearly see genuine pain on the Onix’s face.
What on earth was wrong?
Did it get hit by Dream Eater?
Or a Curse?
Could it be poisoned?
None of those seemed right…
The world at night was indeed full of danger.
Poison-type and Ghost-type Pokémon appeared far more frequently than during the day.
Over the past month, Edward had seen other Pokémon get attacked, and he had even suffered malicious attacks himself.
However, none of that matched the Onix’s current condition.
Crackle, crackle~
“What is going on? Say something, at least.”
Edward stood by, anxious.
If the Onix were still conscious, even if they couldn’t communicate, he could at least make better guesses.
“Hey?! Hold on…”
Crackle, crackle~
“Does this Poké Ball have a status refresh function? Or at least something to delay the deterioration… Besides, I don’t have a Joy here!”
Crackle…
“Who the hell is that? So noisy!” This chapter is updated first at g.com.
Silence…
Phew~
With the noise gone, Edward felt much better.
He let out a sigh of frustration and took the classic red-and-white Poké Ball from his pocket.
In its inactive state, it was only the size of a kumquat.
“We really have a twisted fate.”
Muttering with a complicated expression, Edward decided not to throw it.
He enlarged the Poké Ball, aimed the button at the Onix’s head, and tapped it gently.
The next second, the Poké Ball split in the middle.
An exciting red laser shot out, instantly enveloping the entire body of the Onix.
It magically dissolved its physical structure, turning it into liquid, or a non-solid state similar to nanoparticles, and stored it inside the palm-sized ball.
What an awesome piece of spatial technology!
The Poké Ball in his hand was shaking.
At the button, a red light flickered constantly, as if it were in jeopardy.
However, Edward wasn’t nervous at all.
Instead, he turned his gaze to a little green guy that had fallen out of the Onix’s body after it was sucked into the Poké Ball.
A Larvitar!
He had actually run into a pseudo-legendary!
However…
Thud~ A hollow sound.
The Poké Ball in Edward’s hand settled down, which meant…
He couldn’t capture the Larvitar!
Ahem~
One shouldn’t be like that.
Right now, he should shout, “Onix! Captured!”
Yay…
After shouting without any emotion, Edward breathed a sigh of relief.
At least the reason for the Onix’s pain had been found and resolved.
Both Onix and Larvitar are Pokémon that like to burrow and eat soil.
It was highly likely that when the Onix was digging, it accidentally trapped the unsuspecting Larvitar—or perhaps it was still an egg at the time—into a crevice in its body.
And the latter, upon gaining consciousness, instinctively started gnawing on the “rock” in front of it.
No wonder the Onix was in such agony.
“Larvi?”
The Larvitar, clearly still a newborn, was confused at this moment.
It couldn’t understand why its huge bowl of food had suddenly disappeared.
Although it was hard to chew, it was really delicious.
Then it felt its body lighten.
The whole Pokémon was lifted up.
A massive face pressed against it—how terrifying!
“Larvi!!!”
Despite having an intimidating “scarred” face, the Larvitar was actually very timid.
In mid-air, it struggled with its short arms and legs, but it couldn’t shake off the immense strength of this strange Pokémon! Follow the newest chapters on g.com.
“You’re quite something, knowing how to parasitize an Onix.”
“Larvi?! Larvi!”
The Larvitar was saying it had no idea what he was talking about!
Let me go!
Bad guy!
Edward understood the Larvitar’s body language immediately.
He did as it wanted.
Although it was a pity, he only had one Poké Ball.
And since things had come to this, there was nothing to regret.
Edward, of course, knew that he could free up space in a Poké Ball by releasing a Pokémon.
But he despised that practice, and it wasn’t necessary.
Sometimes, you just have to believe in fate.
Even though the Larvitar was right in front of him, he had missed his chance in this way.
It must just not have been the right time.
Edward wasn’t actually that broad-minded.
A large part of the reason was that he was quite satisfied with the Onix…
Ask yourself, what man could refuse a giant beast that is so big, long, thick, and hard?
He mentioned a “twisted fate” earlier.
Why call it a twisted fate?
That goes back a long, long time.
Edward wasn’t an orphan; it was just that his parents divorced when he was very young, quickly formed new families, and had new children.
As a result, he became the most redundant, but at the same time, the most free person.
Edward wasn’t sure if he was loved, but his parents were at least responsible, always providing ample living expenses.
At the time, Edward was envied by many of his friends.
Though he didn’t know what they were envying him for.
Not having a family?
His young self couldn’t understand.
In those first few years, Edward could only try to hold onto the beauty and happiness of the past by watching, over and over again, the Pokémon original series and Advanced Generation discs that his mother had given him on his fifth birthday.
However.
Memories can be forced to stay, but feelings and emotions cannot.
Edward long ago forgot what it was like to sit in his mother’s arms watching cartoons.
He only remembered one thing: it was Pokémon that saved him.
With plenty of pocket money, he bought various handheld consoles and played every version of the games.
He even had the crazy idea of collecting cards…
of course, he quickly realized his mistake and stopped his losses in time.
He just didn’t lack spending money; he wasn’t actually rich.
And given his situation, he would almost certainly have to rely on himself in the future.
Anyway.
Having played Pokémon for so many years, there was one thing Edward could never let go of, something that made him sigh repeatedly and his back teeth itch every time he thought about it.
It was, surprisingly, the Onix!
The Onix.
It appeared in the original series, was the Gym Leader of Pewter City, and was later the ace Pokémon of the traveling trio’s Brock.
That imposing body and overwhelming power.
Its first appearance left an indelible impression on Edward.
