"Basically, Lilith summoned me and made me fight some demon she was in conflict with, but at least I won." Felix explains, his tone trying to downplay how serious it is.
Arthur looks at him with disbelief and respect, "You fought a demon, and won? That's... I can hardly believe it. Though I don't doubt you, but don't let it go to your head. Despite common perception, actual demon fighting capability is a wide range. Don't assume all demons fight at the same level and that you can defeat any demon you're set up against." He says, his tone helpful and cautioning.
Felix nods, "You're right. I definitely shouldn't. Though I'd like to try out my new device. If you'd still be willing to help?" He asks.
Arthur agrees, and they go to the training grounds. Felix explains how the device works, and what he wants to do. "Alright, I'll attack you, and you try to use your device to avoid or counter me. I'll go faster and harder this time, to simulate a real fight." He says, his voice serious and helpful.
They start sparring, and Felix activates his device. He feels the same sensation as before, but this time it's faster and smoother. He can sense Arthur's incoming attacks clearly, but Arthur comes at him faster and with more complex attack combinations than the demon did. Felix starts to feel overwhelmed, and his mana is low from the fight with the demon. He makes a mistake, and gets hit by Arthur's shield. He stumbles, and Arthur stops.
"Are you okay, Felix? That looked like it hurt. Is your device not working?" He asks, his voice concerned and curious. "No, it's working fine. The problem is me. I'm not used to it yet, and my mana is low. I need to practice more, and get used to the flow of information. It's a lot to process, especially at higher speeds." He admits, his voice frustrated and honest.
Arthur nods, "I understand. It's a new skill, and it takes time to master. Taking a conscious reaction and turning it into an automatic and intuitive response takes time and practice. Being exhausted isn't helping, but that's not the only problem. You're still thinking about what it's telling you before you react."
Felix smiles, "Thanks, Arthur. I appreciate your help and your feedback. If you need any help yourself, just let me know."
They decide to call it a day, and go to the cafeteria for lunch. They eat, and talk about their future plans. Felix says he wants to focus on improving his skills now before his duel with Bia. Arthur says he wants to stay the academy prefect for a while longer. He enjoys the work, and feels like he's making a difference.
They finish their meal, and part ways. Felix meditates to recover his mana a bit, and uses magic to heal himself more and repair the scorch marks on his wizard robe. He then goes to the library and browses the magic section to see if something catches his eye. He finds a book on enchantment theory, and decides to borrow it. He thinks it might help him with future projects.
He leaves the library, and heads home. He sees Nya on the way, and they walk together. They talk about their day, and he tells her about his fight and his device. She's worried about the fight, but glad he's okay. She's also proud of him for his progress. He thanks her, and holds her hand.
They arrive at his house, and find Melina in the living room. She's reading a book, and drinking tea. She greets them, and asks how they are. They say they're fine, and join her. They sit on the couch, and relax. Felix takes out his book, and starts reading. Nya looks at his book, "Oh, I've read that one. It's very good. It explains a lot of things about enchantment in a clear and simple way."
He looks at her, and says, "Really? What did you like most about it?" He asks, his voice curious and engaged.
She smiles, and says, "Well, I liked the chapter on the different types of enchantment energy sources. It talks about how, even though enchanting is mostly seen as a discipline of arcane magic, other power disciplines can be used in enchanting, and the type of energy type used even changes how the enchantments work and what kind of enchantments you can apply."
Felix nods, and flips to that chapter. He reads the first few pages, "Wow, this is fascinating. I didn't know that. I always thought enchanting was just about using mana to imbue objects with effects, but there's so much more to it."Nya replies, "Yeah, it's a great book. I'm sure you'll enjoy it."
They read together for a while, enjoying each other's company. Melina watches them with a soft smile, and says nothing. She's glad to see them getting along so well, and she hopes they'll stay that way. The rest of the day passes peacefully, and they have a nice dinner. Nya stays the night again, and they cuddle and fall asleep. Felix feels happy and content, and ready to get back to classes tomorrow. Though there's still the duel with Bia, and he needs to get ready for that. He knows it won't be easy, but he's not afraid. He has his friends, his skills, and his confidence. He can do this.
Felix wakes up feeling refreshed and ready to start the day. Nya is already up, and getting dressed. He greets her, and she smiles at him. "Good morning, Felix. How did you sleep?" She asks, her voice soft and warm. "Good morning, Nya. I slept very well, thanks to you." He replies, smiling back.
They go to the kitchen, and Melina is there, making breakfast. She greets them with a hug, and a plate of food. "Good morning, you two. I made pancakes with berries and cream." She says, her tone cheerful and loving.
"Thanks, mom. You're the best." Felix says, digging in. Nya says, "This looks delicious, Melina. Thank you." Before tasting a bite.
They eat and chat, enjoying their meal and their company. They talk about their plans for the week, and the duel with Bia. Felix says, "I'm going to focus on practicing my skill, but I'll keep my mind open about anything else that might help."
Nya nods, and says, "That's a good idea, Felix. You've improved a lot, but you can always get better. I'll help you with your magic and theory, if you need me."
Melina adds, "I'll help you with your health and stamina. I have some potions and remedies that can boost your endurance, and prevent injuries. Though I can't directly help with the duel, I'll make sure you're in the best shape possible." Felix thanks them both, "You're the best. I don't know what I'd do without you."
They finish their breakfast, and get ready to go. They kiss and hug, and wish each other a good day. Felix and Nya leave together, and walk to the academy. They hold hands, and enjoy the morning sun. Felix feels happy and loved, and he hopes the feeling will last.
They arrive at the academy, and split up. Felix goes to his first class, which is Nya's class in magic. He takes his seat at the front, and Nya soon enters from the back in teacher mode. She starts the class, and reviews some of the topics they covered last week. She then introduces a new topic: advanced offensive magic.
She says, "Today, we're going to learn about some of the more powerful and complex spells that you can use to attack your enemies. These spells require more mana, concentration, and skill than the basic ones, but they also have greater effects and versatility. Some of them are: chain lightning, scorching rays, ice storm, and force missiles. I'll explain each one, and show you how to cast them."
Felix listens attentively, and takes notes. He's eager to learn these spells, and see how they work. He wonders how well he'll be able to cast them with his casting style. He hopes he can adapt them to suit his needs.
Nya explains the pros and cons of each spell. Chain lightning is a spell that creates multiple arcs of electricity that jump from one target to another. It's very effective against groups of enemies, but it can also harm allies or bystanders if not controlled carefully. Scorching rays are beams of fire that can be aimed at different targets or locations. They're very accurate and damaging, but they require precise aim and timing. Ice storm is a spell that creates a blast of freezing cold and hailstones in an area. It can slow down and injure multiple foes, but it can also obscure vision and affect the terrain. Force missiles are projectiles of pure force that can be fired rapidly and repeatedly. They're very versatile and reliable, but they lack elemental effects and may not penetrate certain defenses.
Nya then gives the students a chance to practice each spell, and gives them feedback and tips. Felix tries them all, and finds some of them easier than others. He likes the force missiles the best, as they suit his style of quick and efficient casting. He also finds the chain lightning interesting, but he has trouble controlling the number and direction of the arcs. He decides to work on that later.
The class ends, and Nya dismisses the students. She calls Felix over "Felix, can you stay for a bit? I have something for you."
He nods, and waits for the others to leave. She then takes out a small pouch from her desk, and hands it to him. "This is a gift from me. It's a pouch of holding, which means it can store more items than its size would suggest. It also has a protection enchantment, which means the items inside are safe from damage or theft. I thought it would be useful for you, especially for your duel. You can put some of your things in there, like potions, scrolls, or tools." She says, her voice thoughtful and kind.
Felix looks at the pouch, and feels touched, "Wow, Nya. This is amazing. Thank you so much. How did you get this?" She smiles, and says, "I bought it with some money I had saved up and wasn't sure what to spend it on. I thought you could use it more than me. You're always making things and experimenting, so I'm sure you have a lot of stuff to carry around. This way, you can have more space, and more security."
He hugs her, "You're the best, Nya. I love it. Thank you." He tells her with his voice being emotional and happy. She hugs him back, "You're welcome, Felix. I'm glad you like it, and... I like you." They separate, and look into each other's eyes. They feel a connection, and a moment of silence. "Well, I have to prepare for my next class. You should go to yours. I'll see you later, okay?" She says, her voice gentle and reluctant.
He nods, "Yeah, okay. See you later, Nya." He says, his voice quiet and soft. They part ways, and Felix goes to combat class while placing the tetrahedron in the pouch of holding and still feels connected to it. He's glad to see Grog there. He greets him, and asks how he's been.
"Hey, Grog. Feels like it's been too long since we last sparred, are you ready for it?" He says with his voice cheerful and eager. Grog grins, and says, "You know it, buddy! Let's get started!"
Grog and Felix get into position, and start sparring. Grog attacks, and Felix uses his device to sense his moves. He tries to react faster and more intuitively, but he still has some hesitation and confusion. He manages to avoid or block some of Grog's strikes, but not all. He also tries to counterattack, but Grog is too strong and skilled. He gets hit a few times, but he doesn't give up. He keeps trying, and learns from his mistakes.
The teacher watches them, and gives them some feedback. He says, "Good work, both of you. Grog, you're very aggressive and powerful, but you need to watch out for Felix's tricks. He's not just a brawler, he's a smart fighter. Felix, you have good instincts and creativity, but you need to work on your speed and timing. You seem to be distracted." He says, his voice critical and constructive.
They thank him, and resume sparring. Felix focuses more on the present moment, and less on the device. It's still not natural for him, but he feels like he's making progress. He starts to anticipate Grog's moves better, and reacts accordingly. He also starts to use his physical enhancement more effectively, combining it with his device. He lands a few good hits on Grog, surprising him. The teacher notices, and nods in approval.
The class ends, and they stop. They shake hands, and congratulate each other. Grog says, "Man, you're getting better, Felix. I'm impressed. I thought I had you figured out, but you always come up with something new." Felix smiles, "Thanks, Grog. You're not so bad yourself. You always push me to my limit."
They walk to the cafeteria, talking and laughing. They meet Luna there, and she joins them. They eat lunch, and chat about their classes and their weekend. Felix tells them about his pouch, and his new spells. "That's so cool, Felix. I wish I had a pouch like that. I always have to carry my alchemy supplies with me, and they take a lot of space." She says, her voice envious and curious.
"I've been reading about enchanting lately, maybe I could try making one for you?" He offers his voice generous and kind.
Luna smiles, "Really? That would be awesome! Thank you, Felix." She says with her voice being grateful and cheerful.
They finish their meal, and Felix and Luna head to general education. They sit together, and listen to the lecture. There's math and more history. Felix is bored as usual, but Luna helps him out with her notes. He appreciates her help, and promises to make her a pouch soon.
The class ends, and Felix goes to psionics. Felix is excited to see Eleanor, and tell her about his device. He enters the classroom, and sees her at her desk. She smiles at him, and he sits in front. "Professor Eleanor, I have to show you something. It's a new psionic device I made." He says, his voice enthusiastic and proud.
She looks interested, "Really? Let me see it." She says with her voice intrigued and open-minded.
He takes out the tetrahedron, and explains how it works. She listens, "Fascinating. You've combined danger sense and precognition using two sides of it, while using the remaining two sides for the integration." He nods, "Yeah, it was Nya's idea. She's been helping me a lot with my projects."
She smiles, "She's a good teacher. She may be new, but she's showing a lot of promise as a teacher."
He agrees with a nod before asking, "What are we doing in class today?" She answers, "Today, I'm going to let you do some independent practice and research. Just take the time to meditate and practice your fundamentals in psionics. You can never train the basics of psionics too much."
He nods, "Okay, I'll do that. I think I need some practice with my cognitive load management." She responds, "Good. I'll be here if you need me, but don't rely on me too much. Try to figure things out by yourself, and learn from your own experience."
He thanks her, and starts practicing. He sits cross legged on one of the cushions and using telekinesis to levitate above the cushion while sensing the world around him. He practices his telepathy by sending and receiving thoughts from other students. He focuses on his mental shield, and tries to find the optimal balance. He feels his mind getting sharper and clearer, and his abilities getting smoother and stronger.
After class he then goes home, feeling tired but satisfied. Meeting up with Nya on the way, who brought some of her clothes with her. They head to his place, and find Melina making dinner. Melina greets them, "Hey, you two. I'm making spaghetti and meatballs tonight. I hope you're hungry." She says, her tone welcoming and motherly. "Also, Nya, after dinner, I think it's time for your next treatment."
They say hi, and sit at the table. They eat, and talk about their day. Felix tells them about his progress with his device, and his practice. Nya tells them about her classes, and her students. Melina tells them about her shop and clinic, and her customers. They have a nice conversation, and enjoy their food. Nya then asks, "Felix, could I borrow your bath after dinner?"
"Of course, Nya. You can use it whenever you want." He says, his voice kind and casual. Nya smiles, "Thanks, Felix. You're so sweet." After dinner, Melina takes Nya to the clinic, and Felix goes to his room to read his book. He learns a lot about enchanting, and focuses on chapters he thinks will help him make a pouch of holding for Luna. He gets some ideas, and makes some notes. He feels like he's on the right track.
Nya comes in while he's reading and asks, "You don't mind me putting these clothes in your closet, do you?" She's holding the clothes she brought with her. He says it's fine, and she puts the clothes in his closet before sitting on the bed with him and laying down to rest while he reads his book. Though after a while he yawns and decides to call it a night. He closes his book and gets in bed, and Nya cuddles up with him. They kiss good night, and fall asleep.
The next day is more of the same. Classes, practice, and homework. Felix feels like he's getting better and more confident, but he also feels nervous about the duel. He knows Bia is strong, and he can't underestimate him. He tries to focus on his own improvement, and not on his opponent. He hopes it will be enough.
Felix wakes up feeling nervous but determined. Today is the last day before the duel with Bia, and he wants to make the most of it. He gets up and gets ready, and then goes to the kitchen. Nya is there, and they greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. She says, "Good morning, Felix. Are you ready for today?" She asks, her voice gentle and supportive.
He smiles, and says, "As ready as I'll ever be. Thanks for being here with me, Nya. It means a lot." He says, his voice sincere and grateful.
She hugs him, and says, "Of course, Felix. I'm here for you, no matter what. I believe in you." She says, her voice warm and loving.
They have breakfast with Melina, who also gives him some encouragement and advice. She says, "Remember, Felix, this is not a fight to the death. It's a test of skill and honor. Don't let your emotions get the best of you, and don't do anything reckless. Be smart, be calm, and be yourself." She says, her voice wise and caring.
He thanks her, and finishes his meal. Then tells them, "I think I'm going to take today off from classes to try to prepare as much as I possibly can. I'll find Grog and Arthur and make sure they're up for helping me with it." He says, his voice resolute and focused.
They nod, and wish him luck. He leaves, and goes to the academy. He finds Grog first, and tells him his plan. Grog agrees, and says, "Sure, buddy. I'll help you train. Let's go to the training ground." He says, his voice enthusiastic and loyal.
They go to the training ground, and Felix tells him, "Don't hold back at all. Really lean into your attacks so I don't get to just try to block them head on." He says, his voice serious and demanding.
Grog nods, and says, "Got it. I'll give you my best, but don't blame me if you get hurt." He says, his voice challenging and joking.
Felix laughs, and says, "I won't. I can handle it. Let's do this." He says, his voice confident and ready.
They start sparring, and Grog attacks with his claws and wilder empowered punches and kicks. Felix uses his device to sense and avoid them, and Felix is much better about using his own intuition and the device at the same time naturally. Though his physical enhancement still doesn't let him match Grog in strength. So he focuses on redirecting Grog's momentum and force to trip him up or knock him off balance. Though as Felix starts doing that, Grog starts changing his approach to work around it. Felix uses his spells to diversify his attack strategies in addition to physical attacks, and telekinesis to adjust his positioning and movements beyond what he could do otherwise. They fight for a long time, and both get tired and sweaty. They take a break, and drink some water.
Grog says, "Wow, Felix. You've improved a lot. You're faster, smarter, and more versatile. I'm impressed." He says, his voice honest and admiring.
Felix smiles, and says, "Thanks, Grog. You're not so bad yourself. You always push me to my limits." He says, his tone humble and friendly.
They rest for a bit, and then Felix says, "I think I'm ready for the most brutal test. I won't hold you too long, I'll go find Arthur, and ask him to not hold back either." He says, his voice eager and nervous.
Grog nods, and says, "Okay. Good luck, Felix. I'll see you later." He says, his voice supportive and casual.
Felix goes to the prefect building, and knocks on Arthur's door. Arthur opens it, and looks surprised. "Felix? What are you doing here?" He asks, his voice confused and curious.
Felix explains, "Arthur, I need your help. I want you to spar with me, and use your full strength. I feel like I should really test my limits, with this being the last day before the duel. Can you do that for me?" He asks, his voice pleading and urgent.
Arthur looks at him, and says, "I don't know, Felix. You're not a full fledged adventurer yet, and I don't want to hurt you. I don't even have to hold back that much to overwhelm you, I could just try to use more advanced techniques." He says, his voice concerned and reluctant.
Felix insists, and says, "Please, Arthur. I need this. I need to know what I can do, and what I can't. I won't hold it against you if you beat me, I just want to learn." He says, his voice desperate and sincere.
Arthur sighs, and says, "Alright, Felix. If you're sure about this, I'll do it, but don't say I didn't warn you. Don't forget to yield if you can't take it anymore." He says, his voice stern and responsible.
Felix agrees, and they go to the training ground. Arthur equips his sword and shield, and says, "Okay, Felix. Let's begin." He says, his voice serious and focused.
Felix activates his device, and channels his physical enhancement. He says, "Ready when you are." His voice calm and ready.
Arthur attacks, and Felix tries to defend himself. But Arthur is on another level than Grog. He's faster, stronger, more skilled, and more experienced. He uses his sword and shield to create a variety of attacks, feints, and counters. He also uses his paladin abilities, such as divine smite, holy light, and celestial wrath. Felix tries to use his device, his magic, and his psionics to cope, but it's not enough. He gets hit, cut, burned, and knocked down. He feels pain, exhaustion, and frustration. Though as he persists, he feels himself refining his physical enhancement more, and the pressure cooker difficulty pushing him to hybridize his style more and more. Starting to weave his magic and psionics together to make them more effective and less draining.
