Chapter 16: Synchronization

Femboy: I will be the greatest mage!

The next day, right after class, I sat cross-legged in the center of the clubroom, a small white ball of fur resting in my lap.

It had been a day since I chose the Path of the Bonded Vessel, and the initial excitement had settled into a focused determination. After finishing my morning classes, I had rushed straight here, skipping lunch, eager to begin my first real training session with Elara.

Elara stood over me, her arms crossed, observing with a critical eye. Nibbles, the Celestial Lynx, was awake and alert, his blue eyes darting around the room.

"Today," Elara began, her voice calm but firm, "we focus on the core mechanic of your Singular Magic: Synchronization."

I looked up at her. "Synchronization?"

Elara nodded. "It isn't just about borrowing power; it's about matching frequencies. Think of it like two instruments playing the same note. If they are even slightly off, the sound is discordant. If they match perfectly, the sound is amplified."

She gestured to Nibbles. "You need to sync your mana flow with his. Not overpower him, not suppress him, but flow alongside him."

I nodded, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath. I placed my hands on my knees, focusing on the mana circulating within my body. I could feel it: a steady, warm current moving through my veins.

I extended my hand toward Nibbles, channeling a small amount of mana, trying to push it toward him. Just a little bit, I thought. Just enough to connect.

I forced the mana out, aiming to wrap it around Nibbles like a net.

Hiss!

My eyes snapped open. Nibbles arched his back, his fur bristling, and leaped off my lap, landing several feet away. He hissed at me, his tail lashing violently.

"What happened?" I asked, startled.

Elara sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "You dominated him. You tried to force your mana into his vessel."

She walked over and knelt beside Nibbles, stroking his fur to calm him down. "Bell, you are the vessel, but he is the source. You cannot simply take, you must invite him."

I looked at my hands, guilt washing over me. "I didn't mean to scare him."

"I know," Elara said gently. "But your instinct was to control. You need to change that. Stop thinking about 'magic' as a tool to be wielded. Start thinking about it as a connection to be felt."

I nodded slowly, absorbing her words. I closed my eyes again, but this time, I didn't focus on the flow of mana.

Instead, I focused on a memory.

I recalled the comfort of Nibbles' purring against my chest, the vibration of his life energy syncing with my heartbeat.

I let those feelings wash over me. My mana, which had been sharp and directive, began to soften. It lost its edge, becoming gentle, inviting, and open.

I opened my eyes and looked at Nibbles. He was still wary, watching me from the corner of the room.

"I'm sorry," I whispered, not just with my voice, but with my mana. I let it radiate from me not as a command, but as a silent invitation.

Nibbles' ears twitched. He took a hesitant step forward, then another. His tail stopped lashing, settling into a gentle sway.

He walked back to me and nudged my hand with his head.

I smiled, I slowly placed him back in my lap, this time without forcing any mana. I simply held him, letting our auras mingle naturally.

"Good," Elara whispered. "Now, try to bridge the gap."

I closed my eyes again. I visualized a thread of silver light connecting my heart to Nibbles'. I didn't push; I pulled.

Suddenly, a warmth bloomed in my chest. A silver light flared between us, connecting our foreheads.

Whoosh.

It felt as though a window had been thrown open in a frozen room. A rush of cold, crisp air flooded my lungs, so pure and sharp it made my head spin. It was Nibbles' mana, his elemental affinity of light and space, refined and crystalline.

My vision shifted.

The world around me didn't disappear, but it changed. The clubroom was no longer defined by color, but by heat. I saw the warmth of my own body glowing red and orange. I saw Elara standing by the window, a warm silhouette against the cool background. I saw the mana in the air, faint wisps of energy drifting like dust.

Thermal vision.

The sensation was overwhelming. I could feel the cold floorboards beneath me, the warmth of Nibbles in my lap, the draft from the window.

I held onto the connection, breathing in the cold air, feeling the flow of mana synchronize perfectly. One heartbeat, two heartbeats...

Ten seconds.

Then, the connection snapped. The silver light vanished, and my vision returned to normal. The rush of energy left me, and I slumped forward, gasping for breath. Nibbles let out a tired meow, collapsing in my lap, exhausted.

I looked up at Elara, my eyes wide. "I saw... I saw everything in heat."

Elara smiled, a rare, genuine smile. "That is one of the Celestial Lynx's unique traits. Thermal vision. It allows them to see the flow of mana and the heat of living things."

She walked over and offered me a hand. I took it, and she pulled me to my feet.

"But," she cautioned, "to actually use his elements, to cast light spells or spatial shifts, you will need a firmer relationship with Nibbles. Synchronization is the key, but trust is the lock."

I lifted Nibbles up, cradling him against my cheek. "Hear that, Nibbles? We have a long way to go."

Nibbles tilted his head, licking my chin with a rough tongue. I laughed and hugged him tighter, burying my face in his soft fur.

A week passed in a blur of classes and training.

Every day, I visited the clubroom after my lessons. Every day, I sat on the floor with Nibbles in my lap, practicing the synchronization. It was grueling work. There were days when the connection broke instantly, days when Nibbles was stubborn and refused to cooperate, and days when I was simply too tired to focus.

But slowly, the time increased. Eleven seconds. Twelve seconds.

Today, we had hit a new record.

Fifteen seconds.

I stood up from the floor, dusting off my skirt, a triumphant grin on my face. Nibbles, looking pleased with himself, hopped onto my shoulder and settled there, his tail wrapping around my neck.

"I did it, Elara! Fifteen seconds!" I cheered.

Elara, sitting at the desk, looked up and nodded approvingly. "Good progress. You're adapting faster than I anticipated."

I nodded, grabbing my satchel. "Thanks, Elara! I'm going to see Kaelen!"

I rushed out of the Magic Tower, Nibbles perched securely on my head this time, his ears twitching in the wind. I ran through the academy grounds, my heart light with the success of the day.

I reached the infirmary, slightly out of breath, and pushed the door open.

"Kaelen, I did it! I managed to synchronize for fifteen seconds straight—"

The words died in my throat.

The room was silent. Kaelen was standing in the center of the room, but he wasn't alone.

He was no longer wearing the infirmary gown or the heavy bandages that had wrapped his arms for the past week. He was halfnaked, without the bandages, his arms were fully exposed. The light from the window caught the definition of his muscles, sculpted and powerful, the result of years of relentless training. He looked strong. He looked... hot.

My face flushed instantly, heat rushing to my cheeks.

But my attention was immediately drawn to the other person in the room.

A man stood before Kaelen, he had a lean figure, nearly as tall as Kaelen, but his presence was suffocating. The air in the room felt heavy, static.

He turned slightly, catching my eye.

Grey skin. Purple eyes.

My breath hitched. The man's skin was a pale, ashen grey, smooth and flawless, contrasting sharply with his deep, amethyst eyes. He wore a smile that didn't reach his eyes, a smile that seemed to say, I am better than you.

My knees wobbled slightly under the weight of his gaze. It wasn't just intimidation; it was a pressure, a density of mana that made the air thick.

Is... is he...?

I knew that description. Grey skin and purple eyes were the hallmark of the royal lineage of the kingdom.

The man finished speaking to Kaelen, his voice smooth and silky. "I trust you will convey my regards to your father. I look forward to our future interactions."

Kaelen's expression was unreadable, he gave a curt nod. "I will."

The man turned and walked toward the door. As he passed me, his purple eyes swept over me, lingering for a fraction of a second on Nibbles before dismissing me entirely. He didn't stop, gliding past with an air of absolute superiority.

The door clicked shut behind him, and the suffocating pressure lifted.

I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding.

Kaelen turned to me, and the tension in his shoulders vanished. A warm smile replaced the stoic mask he had worn. He opened his arms.

"Bell."

I didn't hesitate. I rushed forward and threw my arms around his waist, burying my face in his chest. He smelled of soap and fresh air, the sterile scent of the infirmary gone.

He wrapped his arms around me, holding me close.

"Who was that?" I asked, my voice muffled against his shirt. "He had grey skin and purple eyes..."

Kaelen's grip tightened slightly. "Prince Arcturus. The older brother of Valerius."

I pulled back, looking up at him in shock. "The Prince? Why was he here?"

"He came to 'apologize,'" Kaelen said, the word dripping with sarcasm. "For the incident with upperclassmen and Ren."

I frowned, my expression hardening. "An apology? After what they did to you?"

Kaelen sighed, releasing me and stepping back. "It's politics, Bell. He's the Prince. He doesn't want to make enemies with my father, the Duke of the Eastern Marches. It was a calculated move to smooth things over."

I looked up at him, my face shadowed with anger. "You should have been tougher on him. He shouldn't get away with just a 'sorry' after what happened to you."

Kaelen waved it off, though his eyes were serious. "I don't want to be involved in royal drama. It's better to let it be gone."

He didn't want to fight the Prince. He wanted to keep the peace.

But I wasn't satisfied. I stepped closer, my eyes blazing. "He hurt you, Kaelen. His friend nearly killed you."

Kaelen looked down at me, seeing the fierce protectiveness in my eyes.

He pulled me into another hug, this time tighter. "And if it happens again," he whispered, his voice low and dangerous, "I won't forgive."

We stayed there in silence, the warmth of his body seeping into mine. I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart.

Time seemed to slow down. I realized I had been hugging him for a really long time. My hands were pressed against his back, feeling the hard planes of muscle beneath the thin fabric of his uniform.

Wait.

My hands were on his bare back.

I froze. I had forgotten, he wasn't wearing a shirt.

My palms were pressed directly against his skin. The heat of him, the texture of his muscles.

My face burned crimson. I could feel the heat radiating from my cheeks, spreading down my neck.

Kaelen didn't seem to realize it. He was simply holding me, his chin resting on the top of my head, completely at ease.

I didn't pull away immediately. I let myself linger for one more second, soaking in the feeling, before the embarrassment became too much.

I pulled back quickly, stumbling slightly.

"I... uh..." I stammered, my hands hovering in the air, unsure where to put them.

Kaelen looked at me, confused by my sudden retreat. "Bell? Is something wrong?"

"N-nothing!" I squeaked, my voice an octave higher than usual. "Just... you're not wearing a shirt."

Kaelen blinked, then looked down at himself. He saw his bare chest and a faint flush colored his own cheeks, though he recovered quickly.

"Oh. Right. I just got cleared by the nurse. I was in the middle of changing when the Prince arrived."

He reached for his undershirt, pulling it on quickly. I averted my eyes, staring intently at the floor, though I couldn't help but steal a glance from the corner of my eye as he dressed.

"I'm sorry," he said, buttoning his jacket. "I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."

"It's fine," I mumbled, still unable to look him in the eye. "I just... I was surprised."

He finished dressing and walked over to me, gently taking my hand. "Come on. Let's get out of this room. I've been stuck here for a week. I need to move."

I looked up at him, my blush fading slightly, replaced by a smile. "Okay. Let's go."

As we walked out of the infirmary, Nibbles, who had been quiet on my head the entire time, let out a soft, judgmental meow.

I swatted gently at his tail, my face burning again.

Kaelen chuckled. "So, you said you managed fifteen seconds?"

I nodded, pushing the embarrassment aside. "Yes! It was incredible."
