**Chapter 8A: The Gilded Cage**

The Royal Palace of Eldoria did not merely sit upon the capital’s highest hill; it seemed to grow out of it, a crown of white marble and gold leaf that glowed like a second sun against the winter night. Every spire and dome was lit from within by floating orbs of enchanted light, turning the snow that dusted the battlements into a glittering veil. As the Frost family carriage rolled through the secondary gates—reserved for nobles of lesser precedence—the sheer scale of the festivities became apparent. Hundreds of carriages, each more ornate than the last, lined the cobblestone drives. Liveried footmen in gold and white moved like clockwork figures, and the air hummed with the collective resonance of thousands of minor enchantments: warming spells against the chill, scent diffusers carrying notes of jasmine and amber, and subtle illusion charms that made the night sky appear studded with extra stars.

Inside the carriage, the silence was brittle.

Lily looked like a dream of spring made flesh. She wore a gown of pale blush silk that seemed to glow softly in the dim interior light, embroidered with silver lilies that caught every flicker of the carriage lamps. Her golden hair had been pinned back in an intricate coronet, a few artful tendrils framing her face. Diamond clips sparkled at her ears, and her skin—polished by days of milk baths and rose-petal scrubs—looked like porcelain under the soft glow. She sat with perfect posture, hands folded in her lap, though her fingers occasionally twisted the silk of her fan.

Beside her, Rin was a stark contrast.

Per Felix’s orders, she wore the colors of the House: deep midnight indigo, the shade of the Frost banner at dusk. But she had refused the heavy, layered skirts Lily favored. Her gown was structured and sharp, with a high collar that rose almost to her jawline, long sleeves that ended in narrow cuffs, and a fitted bodice that allowed freedom of movement. Silver frost-moss lace trailed down the front like frozen vines, the only concession to ornamentation. She looked less like a debutante and more like a blade wrapped in velvet—elegant, but unmistakably dangerous.

“Remember,” Lilian whispered, her hand trembling slightly as she adjusted the sapphire necklace at Lily’s throat. “Keep your chin high. Do not let the gossips see you falter.”

She did not look at Rin.

The carriage door opened to a gust of cold air laced with the scent of pine smoke and perfume. Footmen in royal livery bowed as the family descended.

The Great Ballroom was a sea of light and sound. Thousands of floating candles drifted near the vaulted ceiling, their flames steady despite the drafts, reflecting in the polished black marble floor like a mirror of stars. Massive columns of white marble veined with gold rose to support the dome, and between them hung tapestries depicting the victories of past kings—battles against dragon swarms, treaties with elven lords, and the founding of the realm itself. The air smelled of beeswax, spiced wine, and the faint metallic tang of magic.

As the herald’s voice rang out—“House Frost: Lord Felix, Lady Lilian, and their daughters, the Ladies Lily and Rin”—a noticeable hush rippled through the nearest clusters of nobles. Heads turned. Fans paused mid-flutter. Eyes widened.

The “Two Frost Daughters” had been the talk of the capital for weeks.

“Stay close,” Alfons muttered, his hand resting on the hilt of his ceremonial sword. He played the part of the protective elder brother well, his eyes scanning the crowd for threats both physical and social.

As they descended the grand staircase, the whispers began.

“The one on the left… is that her? The one from the borderlands?”

“She looks like a soldier in a dress.”

“Look at her eyes. Pure Frost blood. It’s uncanny.”

Lily plastered a perfect, practiced smile on her face, though Rin could see the way her sister’s fingers gripped her silk fan until her knuckles turned white.
