**Chapter 9A: The Hunter’s Instinct**

The final notes of the orchestra lingered in the air like the last breath of a dying winter. As the music faded, a heavy silence settled over the immediate circle of nobles, their eyes darting between the prince and the girl who looked as though she had been carved from the very ice her family claimed to command.

Prince Kieran did not release her immediately. He looked down at Rin, searching her silver-blue eyes for any crack in the armor, any sign of the girl lost for fourteen years. He found none. She remained as still as a frozen lake. Sensing her subtle tension—the way her shoulders stayed squared, braced for a strike—he realized she loathed this scrutiny.

With a graceful motion, he raised her hand and pressed a slow, respectful kiss to her knuckles, his eyes never leaving hers. It was a silent acknowledgment: *I see you.*

“I shall return you to your kin, Lady Rin,” Kieran said softly, his voice a low hum beneath the rising chatter. “It seems I have occupied the Diamond’s time enough for one evening.”

He escorted her back to the Frost family with the practiced elegance of a lion returning a prize. After a brief, courtly nod to Felix and a lingering, inscrutable look at Rin, he turned and vanished into a circle of high-ranking ministers.

“Well,” Albert whispered the moment the prince was out of earshot, “you didn’t step on his toes, and you didn’t head-butt him. I’d call that a resounding success, sis. Though you look like you’d rather be wrestling a mountain troll.”

Rin ignored his teasing, her gaze sweeping the room. The heat of the ballroom, the cloying scent of a thousand perfumes, and the weight of the indigo silk were becoming a physical burden.

“I need air,” she muttered.

Before Lilian could object or Felix could steer her toward the next waiting suitor, Rin slipped into the shadows of a massive marble pillar. She moved with a silence that defied the rustle of her skirts, threading through the crowd like a ghost.

The balcony she found was tucked away in the West Wing, overlooking the frost-dusted rose gardens. The air here was sharp and honest, biting at her exposed skin. Rin didn’t stop at the railing. She moved toward the darkness of a stone alcove and let out a short, rhythmic whistle—a low, three-note call used by scouts of the Adventurers’ Guild.

A shadow detached itself from the underside of a stone gargoyle above. A figure in a slate-gray cloak dropped silently to the balcony floor.

“You did not need to leave the ball, Little Frost,” the cloaked figure said. The voice was gravelly but warm. He kept his hood up, though the faint glow of the palace lights caught the edge of a jagged scar on his chin.
