THE NEXT DAY.........

THE TWINS..... *THE RED WEDDING*

The Twins smelled of smoke and wet wool.

The Great Hall was too loud. Too warm. Fiddlers sawed above in the gallery, wine ran red across tables, and Lord Walder Frey laughed with a mouth full of missing teeth as his new daughter Roslin was carried giggling to the bedding.

Catelyn Stark did not laugh.

Robb sat beside her, young and flushed with wine, his crown set aside for the night. His wife Talisa and Jeyne — held his hand under the table. Around them, Umber and Karstark men and river lords drank deep. They had been given wine freely, and bread and salt at the door. Guest right. Ancient, sacred.

The bedding rite was crude. Edmure was cheering, Roslin blushing. Walder leered. Then the doors boomed shut.

Catelyn frowned.

The music changed.

The fiddlers stopped the wedding jig. One chord. Then another. Slow, cold, familiar.

_And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low..._

The Rains of Castamere.

A Lannister song. Why would a Frey play a Lannister song?

Her blood went ice. She looked down the high table. Roose Bolton, Lord of the Dreadfort, smiled at her. A thin smile. She grabbed his arm.

Under silk, steel. He wore chainmail to a wedding feast.

Lothar Frey stood too quickly, grinning. His sleeves slipped — more chainmail.

"Cousin!" Catelyn struck Roose across the face, shouting, "Robb!"

Robb stood, confused. "Mother?"

From the gallery, the crossbows rose.

The first bolt took Robb in the shoulder, spinning him. The second in his gut. Talisa screamed. Mead cups flew.

"NO!" Catelyn screamed.

Men under the tables produced daggers. Greatjon Umber roared and overturned a table with his bare hands, taking a sword wound and laughing through blood. Old Lord Wylis was stabbed through the neck as he reached for bread.

Outside, through the stone walls, horns blew — not wedding horns. War horns. And screaming. The screaming of three thousand Northmen being slaughtered in their tents, drunk, unarmed, while Frey archers loosed into canvas.

In the hall, Robb crawled toward her, bleeding, eyes finding hers. "Mother—"

Lord Walder Frey just watched, drinking.

Roose Bolton walked down from his seat, unhurried. His face was calm, as if at a market.

He looked at Robb Stark — the King in the North, the boy who had never lost a battle — and said softly, almost kindly:

"The Lannisters send their regards."

He slid his longsword under Robb's ribs, up into the heart. Twisted.

Robb Stark died looking at his mother.

Catelyn had found a knife. She had Walder's little idiot wife Jinglebell by the hair, blade to throat. Her hands shook. Her voice broke.

"Please... let him go... I won't—"

Walder Frey waved a hand. "I'll get another."

The blade came from behind. Raymund Frey. One clean, deep cut across her throat.

She felt no pain at first, only cold wind on her neck. She thought she could still hear Robb's drums. She thought of Ned. She thought of Bran climbing.

Outside, Grey Wind howled once — and stopped.

The fiddlers kept playing.

After, they cut off Robb's head and sewed Grey Wind's head in its place. They nailed it to a horse and rode it around the Twins, chanting _King in the North._

And that night, for the first time in a thousand years, Guest Right died.

STORM'S END..........
