The older keeper pointed the pole at the east face of the cone.

“Wild dragons den there.

One of them is black as coal and worse than the rest.

It takes kills off the others.

When it gets hungry enough it eats the small ones.

We do not go that way.”

Aemon knew the name.

“The Cannibal.”

The keeper saw the interest and did not feed it.

“Every wild beast that cracks its shell on this mountain is a danger.

No Targaryen has ever put a saddle on them.

They do not know a man’s hand.

Do not try the Cannibal unless the thing was always going to be yours.”

“If you want a mount,” Rhaegar said, “why not take Balerion?” He wanted a door into the Dragonpit and he did not mind using Aemon to cut it.

Aemon put a hand on Baelon’s shoulder.

“Leave the Black Dread for him.

He hit the nose when he was two.”

“The Spring Prince,” Rhaegar said, and copied the hold.

They had Baelon between them.

“Brave Baelon.”

Baelon dropped his weight and went forward out from under both arms.

“When other men say it, it is praise.

When you two say it, it is a joke.”

“You got the kind kind,” Rhaegar said.

The face went long.

“They call me Hardbar.

I asked for Tearless Death.”

Baelon pointed at him and laughed.

“Hardbar is in the royal book.

You will die with it.”

Aemon set a thumb along his jaw.

“You can bury a name under other names.

Father has a string of them.”

Men had started to say Jaehaerys the Wise.

They meant the people put back into the years the Shivers had emptied, the coin moving again, the kingsroad cut through the realm.

Aemon had been named Prince of Dragonstone years ago.

There was no statute that said the title made a man heir.

Targaryen custom did the work, and no one was fool enough to hang a silly byname on him.

He wore a serious face for the rest of the world.

The true one came out around his brothers.

Baelon, the second son, ran hotter.

When the three of them had spent the laugh, the older keeper took the talk back.

“If you mean to claim a dragon, Vhagar is a good thought.

There are two red ones on the west face as well.

Caraxes and Meleys.

Aenys and Jaehaerys both put work into them when they were young.

They will take a command or two.”

Aemon smiled.

“Your people say Caraxes is the meanest of the young ones if you set the wild beasts aside.

I have seen him pull a fish out of another dragon’s mouth.”

“So it has been Caraxes the whole time.” Baelon rubbed his own jaw and started counting beasts for himself.

Every Targaryen child, girl or boy, went into a cradle with an egg.

If the egg opened, the hatchling grew up against that child and the pair became rider and mount.

The eggs in Aemon’s cradle and in Baelon’s had stayed cold.

They would have to take a grown beast on Dragonstone and do the work themselves.

Rhaegar saw where Aemon’s mind had gone and put history under it.

“Thirty-seven after Aegon’s Conquest.

The Conqueror was dead and the realm came apart.

The Hand and Harren the Red killed each other.

Maegor had done useful work putting fires out elsewhere, so Aenys named him Hand and gave him Blackfyre.

That same year two eggs opened on Dragonstone.

Men called it a sign.

Two brothers, one realm.”

The years of Westeros ran long.

Rhaegar was not a Citadel man.

He could not keep every house and every petty war.

He had learned the stories that sat on Harrenhal, and he had learned them properly.

Jaehaerys almost never gave the boys Maegor.

Children who had been born into peace could live in it.

The family’s war was a thing to leave buried.

“Thirty-seven,” Aemon said.

“Those two eggs were Caraxes and Meleys?”

“Balerion and Vhagar were here before the Conquest.

Quicksilver is dead, and she was Aenys’s.

Rhaena was on Dreamfyre in 35, and Dreamfyre was already flying.

That leaves those four out.

Vermithor and Silverwing came out of cradle eggs Rhaena put there with her own hands.

The two that opened in 37 are Caraxes and Meleys.

Aenys named them.”

He said it as fact.

Rhaena had said it first.

How to keep a dragon, how to claim one, how to hatch an egg: the house did not write that down.

It went from head to head.

Aegon had given it to Aenys.

Visenya had given it to Maegor.

Aenys had given it to Aegon the Uncrowned.

Both of those men had been Rhaena’s husbands.

From 37 the realm had been a wreck.

Alysanne had been smaller.

When the war ended in 48, three siblings were left, and Rhaena held more of the dragon-lore than the other two.

What Jaehaerys knew now, she had put in him.

Once she had decided Rhaegar was a true dragon of a different kind, she had given him the same store.

High Valyrian was the piece still sitting half-learned in his mouth.

The older keeper listened and nodded.

He would take the boy’s count.

“Caraxes is vicious.

We call him the Blood Wyrm.

If Prince Aemon wants him, he will need more patience than most.”

“Thank you.” Aemon was polite with every man.

It was how he was built.

The keeper gave him a one-handed bow.

“It is our work.

And our honor.”

Rhaegar came off his feet and hooked an arm around Aemon’s long thin neck.

“I talked all that and you thank him.”

“Thank you?” Aemon tried to pry the arm off and found he could not.

The voice went up.

“You broke my sister’s nose.

The maester says it will heal crooked.

She will wear that face for life.”

Rhaegar would not give him intent.

“A yard takes marks.

She took a fight that was too big for her.”

Baelon came in from the other side and got Rhaegar’s throat.

“She found us at first light.

Wooden sword.

She knighted us.

The price was you.”

“You said yes?”

Baelon wrenched at his head.

“She is our sister.”

Rhaegar tightened on Aemon.

“She is my aunt.”

Aemon had the height and none of the meat.

He could not break the hold.

“Baelon.

His feet.

Up.”

“Leave the breeches!”

Rhaegar got a hand down and caught what Baelon was dragging off him.

“Two of you.

Fine.

I have slaps enough for a dragon.” Comment, its makes me happy …
