Unlike the Seven Kingdoms, where Weirwood trees had dwindled to a precious few, the Haunted Forest beyond the Wall was full of them.
Face-carved trunks everywhere, ancient eyes watching from the dark between the trees.
The ritual itself was simple.
Leon recited his oath before a Weirwood, rose to his feet, and felt nothing different.
No surge of power.
No divine weight settling onto his shoulders.
Just the wind, the cold, and the quiet forest.
Chief Steward Bowen Marsh had accompanied him through the oath-taking, then led his men back to the Wall, leaving Leon alone.
First time outside the castle.
He didn’t rush back.
He knew the odds.
Wandering the Haunted Forest alone meant a real chance of running into White Walkers.
But Leon had a Valyrian Steel Sword at his hip, and after what he’d already lived through, White Walkers didn’t frighten him much anymore.
Seeing no one around, he spoke quietly.
“Panel.”
The display bloomed in front of him.

Leon studied the newly added functions, then turned his attention to the most immediate decision: the Agility specialization point from equipping the Black and White Kiss.
“Bows, Crossbows, Throwing…”
Three options.
The three mainstream ranged combat methods in Westeros, when you got down to it.
Bows were the safe pick.
High skill ceiling, average damage, nothing special except attack speed.
Easy to acquire, easy to keep supplied.
The jack-of-all-trades choice.
Crossbows were the opposite.
Almost no learning curve: aim, squeeze, done.
The killing power was brutal, and this world even had Scorpion Bolts capable of dropping dragons.
But acquiring one was another matter entirely.
Every lord controlled them as restricted military hardware, and getting his hands on one wouldn’t be simple.
Throwing weapons covered everything from spears and javelins to wildling axes and the rocks bandits hurled from ambush.
The easiest category to source: whatever was in reach, you threw.
The problem was variance.
The gap between a thrown stone and a war javelin was enormous, making the ceiling and floor wildly inconsistent.
Leon thought it over, then put the Agility specialization point into Bows.
The logic was straightforward: bows scaled for mass deployment, and Night’s Watch Rangers already leaned toward the bow.
Crossbows weren’t a bad choice on their own, but the reload speed killed it for him.
Too slow.
He set it aside without much regret.
This wasn’t a max-level allocation, so even with the point spent, Leon would still need to find a bow and put in actual practice.
The panel had handed him a full archery guide to work from, though.
The learning curve wouldn’t be brutal.
He scrolled down.
Time to deal with the free attributes.
As Master-at-Arms of the Night’s Watch, training would be a constant part of his life going forward.
The 11 free attribute points from leveling up had been sitting unspent long enough.
Leon put all 9 into Social.
Then he took the new Social specialization point and dropped it into Leadership.
This wasn’t a game world, so there was no hard troop cap.
Pay the wages, and the army could grow as large as he wanted.
Simple math.
It was the first time he’d allocated points to the panel’s bottom three stats.
He was curious what a single point in Leadership would actually do.
He found out immediately.
“Panel unlocked: ‘Veteran’s Respect’ — Bandit units in your force can now be converted into regular troops!”
A line of text appeared before his eyes and Leon stared at it, equal parts stunned and thrilled.
The troop-farming skill from Mount and Blade.
The actual one.
With that unlocked, soldier shortages were no longer something he’d ever have to worry about.
He thought about the world map: bandit parties cluttering every road and valley, practically begging to be recruited.
Westeros was probably no different.
The corners of his mouth pulled into a grin so wide he nearly blew a snot bubble.
