Ser Willem Darry moved through the crowded streets of Braavos like a hunted man.

His heavy cloak hid his face, and one hand stayed clamped on his sword hilt.

His eyes swept every shadow, every alley, every face that lingered too long.Full novel: Game of Thrones: The Dragon Who Remembers — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He had every reason to be jumpy.

Only hours earlier, assassins had tried to kill him in the harbor district.

After doubling back through twisting lanes and confirming no one was following, he slipped into a narrow side street.

Halfway down stood a nondescript house that most people would walk past without noticing.

Willem knocked in a precise, coded rhythm.

The door opened almost at once.

A woman in her thirties stood in the doorway.

Before she could speak, Willem pushed inside and the door shut behind him with a solid click.

The woman’s nose twitched.

She caught the sharp copper scent of blood on him.

“You’re hurt, ser?”

Willem dropped into a chair, exhausted.

“Killers jumped me at the docks. I’m fine. But we have to leave Braavos, Your Grace. Tonight.”

What truly terrified him wasn’t the attack itself.

A week earlier, the guards he had personally chosen had turned on them.

Only Princess Visenya’s quick sword had stopped one of the traitors from reaching Daenerys.

Another few seconds and the youngest Targaryen would have been dead.

The woman listening was Rhaella Targaryen, widow of the Mad King and mother of the last living Targaryen princesses.

Years of exile had burned away whatever softness remained in her.

The last week had only sharpened her further.

Braavos was no longer safe.

It had become a trap.

“Then we leave,” she said without hesitation.

“Where do you suggest?”

“Volantis,” Willem answered.

Rhaella waited for him to explain.

“Four years ago the Red Priests took complete control. The city is now a theocracy ruled by their High Mother—Kinvara. Twenty thousand fanatical soldiers answer to her. In a place full of Red God zealots, even Robert’s assassins would think twice before striking. It’s the safest stronghold in Essos right now.”

Rhaella considered it.

She knew the rumors.

Volantis had become something new and dangerous.

But she also knew her bloodline.

If the High Mother learned who they truly were, she might decide to keep the last Targaryen women as trophies—or worse.

Still, staying in Braavos meant waiting for the next knife in the dark.

Robert and Tywin would never stop sending killers.

At least in Volantis they had a chance.

Rhaella’s voice was steady.

“Volantis it is.”

Willem nodded and pushed himself up to begin preparations.

Rhaella watched him go with quiet gratitude.

Without this old knight’s stubborn loyalty, she and her daughters would never have survived the first brutal years of exile.

She was no longer the sheltered queen who once sat in the Red Keep doing needlework.

Exile had forged her into something harder.

But it was Willem who had bought her the time to become that woman.

She opened the inner door.

Two girls looked up from their packing.

The younger one, ten years old, had silver-gold hair and bright purple eyes.

She was small and delicate, pretty enough to stop hearts when she grew older.

Daenerys smiled the moment she saw her mother.

“Mother!”

Rhaella crossed the room and kissed both of Daenerys’s round cheeks.

The girl squirmed.

“I’m not a baby anymore.”

Rhaella only smiled.

She was already dangerous with a dagger and knew more about poisons than most grown men.

Her older sister, Visenya, stood nearby.

Seventeen, tall for a girl, with the same striking silver hair and vivid purple eyes.

Where Daenerys favored stealth and poison, Visenya had taken after her namesake.

She lived for the sword.

Her skill with a longsword already shamed most men who called themselves warriors.

Rhaella looked at both of them.

“We’re leaving for Volantis. Before we go, dye your hair black. All of it.”

Neither girl argued.

They moved at once—Visenya gathering the dye, Daenerys pulling out the plain traveling clothes they would need.

There was no complaint, no hesitation.

In this family, survival came first.

Unity was not a choice; it was the only reason they were still breathing.

Rhaella joined them, helping Daenerys pack the few valuables that might one day buy them swords or silence.

The fine gowns and crowns stayed behind.

A mother’s priority was simple: keep her children fed and alive.

Everything else was weight they could no longer afford to carry.

An hour later they were ready.

Three black-haired women and one old knight stepped out of the house with the famous red door.

They wore the loose, sand-colored robes of desert travelers—anonymous, forgettable.

Daenerys paused at the threshold and looked back at the red door one last time.

For a moment her young face was solemn.

Then she turned and followed her mother into the night.

Rhaella did not look back at all.

The only home she had ever truly wanted was the Red Keep.

Everything else had only ever been temporary shelter.
