The morning sun shone through the gaps in the curtains, gently tickling William's eyes as he slowly opened them. For once, he did not have to tear himself away from this blissful state in order to make it to the morning training session, or to prepare himself for the important match against Blackpool.
However, as William sleepily glanced at the clock, he was surprised to feel that his limbs were still heavy with tiredness. Not the tiredness of a footballer who had just finished a hard game, but the aftertaste of the roaring crowd still had him rooted to the spot.
Nevertheless, time spent away from his studies was time wasted, and as William had devoted several days away from school in order to focus on his trial, it was high time he returned to his studies. With a reluctant sigh, he dragged himself away from his cozy bed, yawn widely as he stretched his arms upwards, as he entered the bathroom. With a heavy breakfast of oatmeal and fruits, William pulled on his school uniform, the fabric of which felt especially tight after the light Blackpool shirt.
As William made his way towards the gates of the school, he felt incomparably nervous, as if he was walking past the heavy doors of the stadium for the first time. As he made his way down the hallway towards his locker, he was surprised to feel that people were whispering as he passed by, pointing him out as he walked by.
When William entered the classroom, there was an expectant hush that fell over the room before erupting into welcoming smiles and waves. Even the girls who had never shown him any attention before were giggling and sending him welcoming smiles and waves.
William felt himself blush at the sudden popularity, feeling incredibly embarrassed that he had not anticipated this sudden change in his status. Sitting down at his desk, William pulled out his notebook, feeling the stares of his classmates on his back as he did so. Did they find him incredibly fascinating now that they had seen him on television, or was it because they missed him in class? Either way, William was not a celebrity before his trial, and he had no idea how to react to this sudden change in his fortune. He pulled his head down to focus on his work, but the attentive stares of his classmates continued throughout the morning, reminding him that his life had changed dramatically.
As William walked towards the cafeteria during the mid-morning break, he felt a familiar presence block his path. Stone, his best friend
from the Chelsea Academy, stood before him, his muscular frame blocking the view of the rest of the hallway. Stone was a giant of a man, and he had an incredible eye for talent, which made him one of the most respected figures in the footballing world. Stone had a wide grin on his face as he playfully shoved William's shoulder, almost knocking him off balance with his incredible strength.
"Well, well, if it isn't the new star of Blackpool!" Stone exclaimed, his voice echoing through the hallway as he laughed heartily. Stone grabbed William's arm and pulled him aside, eyeing him up and down with a mixture of surprise and admiration.
"Why didn't you tell me that you had already signed a massive contract with Blackpool FC? I saw the highlights, man, and you looked like you had been playing there for years!"
William shook his head furiously, his hands raised in a gesture of protest as he tried to stop the rumors from spreading. "I haven't signed
anything with Blackpool, Stone, I swear," William said, his voice low and serious as he tried to keep the excitement out of his voice. He explained to his friend that he was only there for a trial, and that the game they had seen was his final opportunity to impress the club's board members. "I am still waiting for the call, and to be honest, I haven't heard from the club since I left the locker room that night.
Stone looked surprised, but he did not let it dampen his mood since he knew how much talent William had. "Regardless of the contract, William, you have changed,I've watched you play since we were kids at Chelsea, but now you play like a professional who has been in the league for a decade. You move with such confidence, and your decision-making is so quick that it's scary."
William felt a rush of pride in his chest since Stone was one of the hardest critics to please. He thanked his friend for his kind words, and
they continued chatting about the finer details of the game before the bell rang, signaling the end of the break.
The rest of the day was relatively uneventful, but William's thoughts were consumed with his phone, waiting for a call from either Blackpool or his home club, Chelsea. When the final bell rang, he did not stay to chat with the girls who had waited by the door, but he walked home with his heavy bag over his shoulder. The house was empty when he arrived, so he threw his bag on the table and lay down on the living room couch, staring blankly at the ceiling. He was waiting for his father, Mr. Gill, to return from work so they could discuss what the next step should be.
To kill the time, William picked up the television remote and turned the channels until he landed on a sports channel. As he was
scrolling through the channels, a breaking news alert caught his eye, and his heart stopped beating as he read the words on the screen. The headline at the bottom of the screen read,
"BREAKING NEWS: THOMAS TUCHEL SACKED BY CHELSEA FC."
William sat up straight, his heart pounding in his chest as he listened to the news anchor explain the situation. The manager had been fired due to internal conflicts and disagreements with the ownership.
A chill ran down William's spine as he realized that Thomas Tuchel was the man at Chelsea who had supported him the most. Tuchel was the one who had fought for him to be given a chance at first-team football, and now he was gone, leaving William stranded at his home club. He felt incredibly sorry for himself, realizing that the new management would not
know who he was, or what he was capable of achieving.
As the news anchor continued to discuss the developments, William's father entered the room, looking incredibly tired after a long day at work. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the television, his eyes widening in shock as he took in the breaking news.
William and his father stood motionless in the middle of the room, incredibly surprised at the developments. "This is bad, William," said Mr. Gill, who dropped his keys on the table as he spoke. "Tuchel was your biggest supporter, and without him, we don't have much leverage with Chelsea."
Mr. Gill's mobile phone shattered the quiet. William's heart pounded in his chest as his father slowly pulled the phone from his pocket, his eyes widening in surprise as he looked at
the caller ID.
"It's them," said Mr. Gill, his voice shaking slightly as he answered the call. "It's Chelsea."
William listened closely as his father put the call on speaker, his heart pounding in his chest as he listened to the representative's cold and emotionless voice. They wanted to meet with William and his father the following afternoon at the office to discuss his future with the club. There were no words of encouragement, no mention of his incredible performance at Blackpool, but rather a cold and business-like tone that left William feeling incredibly disappointed.
As the call ended, the room suddenly felt even colder than it had been before. William looked at his father, his eyes searching his face for any sign of hope. Everything he had worked for, every early morning and long trial, suddenly felt incredibly forlorn, as if everything he had done was hanging by a thread that could snap at any moment. At this particular moment, it felt as if the sun was setting for William Gill.
