CHAPTER 25: BLACKPOOL NEWS

GEM TALENT

Ding dong!!!

The alarm sounded as climbed out of bed, his thoughts were a tangled web of numbers, club names, and the heavy, nagging silence that

continued to drift from the direction of Blackpool FC. He moved through his morning routine like a ghost, barely noticing the taste of his cereal or the weight of his school bag, because his brain was busy replaying the phone call from Ryan, the Birmingham City scout.

While the prospect of a third major club wanting his signature was enough to make any teenager jump for joy, William felt a strange, hollow ache in his chest; he was being chased by giants, yet the one club that felt like home had still not uttered a single word.

The school day felt like an endless marathon of boredom, with every minute dragging by like a heavy sledge being pulled through thick mud. William sat in his advanced mathematics class, staring at the equations on the chalkboard, but the numbers didn't look like algebra to him; instead, they looked like weekly

wages and contract durations. His teacher, Mr. Walker, was explaining the complexities of calculus. He tried to focus, gripping his pen so

tightly his knuckles turned white, yet his mind kept wandering back to the meeting he had scheduled for after school.

As soon as the final bell rang, signaling the end of his last lecture, William was the first one out of the door, moving with a purposeful stride that bordered on a run. He followed the GPS directions Ryan had sent him, winding through the historic streets of the city until he reached a quiet corner where a magnificent building stood. The coffee shop looked less like a modern cafe and more like a miniature, ancient palace.

It was constructed from weathered gray stone, with towering arched windows and massive

oak doors that looked heavy enough to guard a treasury. As William stepped inside, the chime of a small bell announced his arrival, and he stopped in his tracks, his eyes widening at the sight of the interior.

The walls were lined with grand, marble statues of great people from England's

history : kings, explorers, and poets—who seemed to stare down at the patrons with

frozen, dignified expressions. The ceiling was high and vaulted, decorated with intricate gold leaf that caught the warm light of the chandeliers, creating an atmosphere that was both intimidating and incredibly peaceful. William felt a dense of calm wash over him as he inhaled the rich aroma of roasted beans and

old wood, feeling as though he had stepped out of the chaotic world and into a sanctuary of elegance.

He spotted Ryan sitting at a small, circular table in the back, he went to him directly.

Ryan stood up with a wide, friendly smile, extending his hand for a firm shake that felt professional yet welcoming. "William, I'm so glad you could make it," Ryan said, gesturing for him to take a seat on the plush, velvet-covered chair.

"I know your time is valuable, especially with everything going on in your life right now, so I'll get straight to the point." After the waitress brought them two steaming cups of tea, Ryan leaned forward, his eyes bright with excitement.

"Birmingham City isn't just looking for a player; we are looking for a heartbeat. We've watched your tapes, we've seen your vision on the field, and we believe you are the missing piece of our midfield puzzle."

William listened intently as Ryan laid out the terms of the proposal, his heart

thudding a heavy rhythm against his ribs.

"The club is prepared to offer you a weekly wage of eighty-five thousand pounds," Ryan stated, the number hanging in the air like a heavy weight.

"However, there is a catch that I want to be honest about. Because the base salary is so high for a player of your age, the board has decided not to include any additional performance bonuses, such as goals or clean sheets. The only extras would be a significant payout if we win a domestic cup or if we achieve our goal of promotion to the Premier League."

William's mind immediately began to calculate the differences between this and the Swansea offer, realizing that while the weekly pay was higher here, the lack of bonuses felt a bit restrictive. He appreciated the transparency, but he couldn't help but feel that a player should be rewarded for their individual

contributions on the pitch. Still, he knew that Birmingham City was a massive club with a rich history, and they were currently sitting only six points behind Swansea in the league standings, which meant the competition for the top spot was fierce.

"It's a lot to think about," William replied, trying to mimic the calm, wise tone his father often used. "I'm very impressed by the club's

ambition, but I can't make a decision like this on my own. I need to sit down with my dad and go over everything properly."

Ryan nodded understandingly, leaning back in his chair. "Of course, William. Family is the most important thing, and we want you to be one hundred percent sure that Birmingham is the right home for you. Take your time, talk to your father, and just know that our door is wide open for you."

They finished their tea, talking briefly about the city and the club's training facilities, before

William stood up to leave. As he walked back past the silent statues, he felt a strange mixture of pride and confusion; he was now worth eighty-five thousand pounds a week to one of the biggest clubs in the Championship, yet he still felt like a piece of his heart was missing because of Blackpool's silence.

On his way home, William decided to stop at the local mall to pick up a few things for his father, hoping the bright lights and bustling crowds would distract him from his thoughts. He moved through the aisles of a large

department store, his mind still hovering somewhere between Birmingham and

Swansea, when he suddenly froze. Walking toward the sports section was a tall, muscular man with a familiar, confident stride and a face that William had seen on television dozens of times. It was Fernandes, the captain and brilliant winger of Blackpool FC.

Before William could even decide whether to say hello or hide behind a clothing rack, Fernandes' eyes locked onto his, and a massive grin spread across the captain's face.

"William! My man!" Fernandes shouted, his voice booming across the store as he stepped forward and wrapped William in a powerful, friendly hug that nearly lifted the teenager off the floor. The hug felt like a warm welcome

into a secret brotherhood, and for a second, all of William's anxieties vanished.

"I was hoping I'd run into you before everything became official," Fernandes said, pulling back but keeping a supportive hand on William's

shoulder. William felt his breath hitch in his throat, his eyes wide with shock. "Official? What do you mean?" he stammered, his heart beginning to race with a new kind of adrenaline.

Fernandes chuckled, leaning in closer as if sharing a top-secret tactical plan. "Listen, I probably shouldn't be telling you this yet because the suits in the boardroom like to take their sweet time with the paperwork, but the club has already agreed to sign you on loan from Chelsea. The coaches have been raving about your trial, and as the captain, I've already been told to prepare a spot for you in the dressing room".

The words hit William like a lightning bolt, sending a surge of pure, unadulterated joy through his entire body. The "locked door" he had been so worried about wasn't locked at all; it was just being opened slowly. He wanted

to scream, to jump, and to perform a celebratory backflip right there in the middle of the mall, but he forced himself to remain calm, nodding respectfully to the man who might soon be his teammate.

"Thank you, Fernandes. That... that means the world to me," William said, his voice thick with emotion.

As Fernandes waved goodbye and disappeared into the crowd, William stood still

for a long moment, the noise of the mall fading into the background. The heavy weight that had been pressing down on his chest for days had finally lifted, replaced by a soaring sense of hope and excitement.

He still didn't know the details of the Blackpool contract, and he still had two massive offers from Swansea and Birmingham to consider, but for the first time in a week, the fog had cleared. He walked out of the mall. He is ready to face whatever the next day would bring now that he knew his dream was finally within reach.
