CHAPTER 5: ONE STEP AHEAD

GEM TALENT

The events of this meeting that took place on that day resounded victoriously in William's ears, a delightful movie, if only it had been in the little kitchen where he was celebrating. The yellow radiance of the bulb danced around the room, which welcomed him as if it had opened its arms to him for the first time in a long time. He saw his dad, Mr. Gill, a proud, tearful parent, beaming at him as he stood on the dinner table with his hands folded. That night, as William's life took a turn for the better, Mr. Gill was overwhelmed beyond words; his son was making history in his lifetime. Mr. Gill knew William's love for the sport, and he had wished that his son would follow his dreams.

Mr. Gill was delighted with William's decision and breathed a sigh of relief that his son's football dreams had not disappointed him. William narrated to his dad how Coach Tuchel had looked into his eyes and assured him of his help.. Mr. Gill and William knew that their lives would improve for the better, and as William prepared to go to bed that night, he felt as if he were under the expectations of the whole world.

The sun peeked through the blinds of William's curtains as he woke up to the most exhilarating day of his life. William got dressed to go to school, but his mind was miles away as he stepped out of his house. He felt as if he could not wait to get to the day's events. The banter of his friends about video games and their latest playlists took a backseat as William's mind wandered back to the footwork he had been practicing for days. As he sat in class, his body was in class, but his soul was on the pitch. William responded exceptionally well to the questions; however, the industrial revolution that had been taught in Geography failed to grab his attention. All he could think about was the upcoming evening, the day William would meet his football coach, Thomas Tuchel.

As the bell finally rang, William dashed to the training ground. He could not wait to get there. As he exited, he ignored the questions from his friends as he did not have the time or the energy to listen to them. William's eyes were fixated on the training pitch as he dashed there with his bag tied to his back. William reached the training ground, surprised to see coach Thomas Tuchel, who looked as sharp as ever in his black tracksuit. He had a stopwatch around his neck, and Tuchel saw the passion in William grow by the day as he looked at him.

"Great! Today we are going to work on your strength and stamina," said Thomas Tuchel. Barely had they exchanged pleasantries before Thomas Tuchel was working out William. The exercises were more strenuous than William had ever imagined. They were all geared to help prepare William for elite club football. The coach wanted to see what the young talent could handle, so he made William perform "shuttle runs" while wearing a weighted vest. Nothing had prepared William for the type of training he was about to experience. Nothing had prepared him for what was next. Nothing could have prepared him for the trials and tribulations that came with being in the elite club. The pain in his muscles numbed as William visualized himself playing football on the professional pitch.

"It was all vivid," said Thomas Tuchel. In addition to the various drills they had done, Thomas Tuchel decided to have a physical encounter with William. According to Thomas Tuchel's instructions, William had to protect the ball as if they were in a physical fight. He pushed William as much as he could to ensure that his "core stability" was improved. Moreover, William had to hold his position to ensure that he would not land on his backside. All William had to do was to plant his feet, hold his glutes, and thighs to make his core stable. It was a wrestle, but on the pitch, William used his arms to protect the ball as he wrestled with Tuchel's legs. William had fallen several times, biting his lip before finding his power again to continue wrestling. He had the determination not to give up, even as his sweat mixed with the dry soil. William struggled to hold his position as Tuchel pushed him as hard as he could.

"We will move on to "explosive movements", said Thomas Tuchel. The coach told William to "jump over the hurdles and accelerate to full speed". William had to raise his knees as if he were in an Olympic race and throw his arms backward. William's lungs burned as if on fire, and his heart pounded in his ears like a drum. The exertion almost overwhelmed him until he began to imagine Zinedine Zidane on the pitch. These mental powers drove him to keep going because he had to be the best and a great footballer. William appreciated the workouts, and he was ready to learn and develop his football skills.

It was evening, and the sky had turned to purple and orange as the sun set below the horizon. Thomas Tuchel glanced at his stopwatch one last time and gave William a thumbs up before exiting the pitch. Tuchel had his managerial duties to attend to, and the pitch suddenly seemed eerily silent as William prepared to leave. Before exiting, William removed the vest and the damp shirt and reviewed all he had learned about football and strength training that day. He decided it was high time to practice and develop his moves before ending his day there on the pitch. William knew the old adage that said practice makes perfect, so he had to perfect his moves and make them part of his muscle memory. It was already dark outside, so William dribbled around the cones, imagining that there were defenders trying to steal the ball from him. William also practiced his "turning radius," spinning his body fast enough to keep the ball close to him. He spent some time on his "acceleration," the rate at which he increased his speed. After the drills, William sat on the grass, catching his breath, and was thrilled that he had completed everything he had set out to do that day.

Even though his legs ached like there were sandbags attached to them, William looked up at the stars twinkling in the night sky and was glad that all the efforts had borne fruits. He was no more the "talentless" child who had struggled with football, but his efforts had borne fruits as he transformed into his own young man, carving his niche in the world of football. William picked his bag and left the pitch, calculating how long he had before his trial day in Blackpool. It was about six days away, and his thoughts turned to his upcoming trial in Blackpool. It would be the ultimate test, and William could hardly wait to get there. As William left, the pain and fatigue in his body reminded him that it would be another day of hard work and endless tears. He does not know what the results of the trial would be, but he believes that he can convince everyone that he will be a great player in the future, and William Gill was ready to fight his way to the top and win.
