Enjoy!

### Chapter 5: Games Secrets And Stolen Glances

The month of discovery in China was everything Habiba had dreamed of, and more.

Life had become a blur of flavors—the rich, savory steam of beef hotpot that warmed her from the inside out, and the delicate, perfect stretch of hand-pulled noodles that she couldn’t get enough of.

But it was the quiet nights at Zhou Han’s private residence that felt most like home.

Away from the flashing lights, they were just three friends in a living room, shedding the weight of their public personas.

One evening, the atmosphere was particularly electric.

They had been playing video games for hours, their shouts and laughter echoing against the walls, before switching to a playful game of hide-and-seek.

It was absurd, childish, and entirely perfect.

When Habiba finally found Lin Sheng hiding behind a heavy velvet curtain, he pulled her into a hug—the penalty they had agreed upon—and for a heartbeat longer than necessary, neither of them moved.

His heart was hammering against her own, a steady rhythm that spoke volumes his lips wouldn’t dare.

But Habiba’s heart remained heavily guarded.

The betrayal she had endured back in Kenya—her husband’s infidelity that had shattered her trust—had left deep scars.

She loved the company of Zhou Han and Lin Sheng, but to her, they were brothers, her protectors, her pillars.

To Habiba, the idea of “love” was a dangerous territory she had no intention of entering again.

Later, as they sat on the floor cooling down, Zhou Han leaned back with a mischievous glint in his eyes.

He nudged Habiba.

“Tell us the truth,” he teased.

“When you were watching our dramas, didn’t you have a massive crush on me?”

Habiba felt the heat rise, remembering how she had crushed on them back in the days watching their dramas, and how later on she had a massive crush on Lin Sheng.

But now, those sorts of feelings don’t exist anymore.

She rolled her eyes.

“You?” she teased, hiding the truth of back then.

“Not even a little bit.”

Zhou Han laughed, unfazed.

“And the Korean stars? The ones from that drama you’re talking about, don’t tell me you didn’t swoon over them?”

Habiba rattled off the names—always choosing the ones that kept her secrets safe.

She played the game well, keeping the conversation light.

To them, she was just an aspiring actress with a love for great stories.

To herself, she was a woman successfully keeping men at a distance so she could avoid heartache again.

Later, when Habiba stepped away to get more tea, Zhou Han turned to Lin Sheng, his voice dropping to a low, serious whisper.

The playfulness was gone, replaced by the weight of reality.

“Come on, man,” Zhou Han murmured, nodding toward the kitchen where Habiba was humming to herself.

“We both know what’s happening here. You’re completely, madly in love with her. Why are you still hiding it? Why aren’t you telling her how you feel?”

Lin Sheng looked at his friend, then watched Habiba through the doorway.

He took a slow breath, his eyes filled with a beautiful, painful longing.

He saw the invisible wall she kept between her heart and the world.

“I can’t, Han,” Lin Sheng whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

“You know what she went through. Her trust was destroyed by someone she loved more than anything. If I push my feelings on her now, I will only scare her away. I need to be her brother, her friend, her harbor. I have to be the one person she never has to be afraid of.”

He looked back at his friend, his jaw set with resolve.

“I will wait. I will protect her, I will watch her shine, and I will be here when she’s ready to trust again. But I won’t ruin the peace she’s finally found.”

In the kitchen, Habiba was humming, content and grateful.

She felt a profound sense of luck—she had found the best brothers a woman could ask for.

She didn’t realize that in the next room, the man she felt the closest to was quietly deciding to love her in silence, waiting for a day that felt a lifetime away.

### Author’s Note

Thank you so much for reading Chapter 5!

We’ve seen the warmth and the “brotherly” comfort Habiba feels, but as we know, the life of an actor and those around them is rarely ever just peaceful.

Next time, in Chapter 6: the reality of fame comes crashing down.

Anonymity is a luxury, and Habiba is about to learn just how quickly that luxury can disappear.

When a private moment is leaked to the relentless media, the “peace” she found is a little bit shaken.

The world is asking, “Who is this mysterious African woman by Lin Sheng’s side?” and the media is an insatiable beast.

Don’t miss the next chapter—it’s going to be intense.

See you on Wednesday my lovely readers.
