Antony said nothing for a moment, then nodded.

"My family becomes the primary protected target."

Alric immediately replied, "Then we double the manor guard."Full novel: Global lords: My wife is an SSS-RANKED Goddess. — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"Triple it."

"My Lord..."

"I know we don’t have enough." Antony looked toward the Red Core. "Which brings us to the next problem."

Silence returned in the chamber.

Oren followed his gaze.

"Territory growth."

"Yes."

For ten years Antony had actively avoided aggressive expansion. Now the red glow of the core seemed almost insulting.

He summoned the core interface.

[Urelias Territory Core]

[Core Color: Red]

[Territory Stability: 94%]

[Territory Prosperity: 69%]

[Population: 3,873]

[Military Readiness: 31%]

[Resource Sustainability: 73%]

[Core Evolution Available: NO]

[Next Core Stage: Orange]

Antony folded his arms.

"What would we need to reach Orange without taking someone else’s land?"

Oren answered immediately.

"Population growth, infrastructure, core energy, and territorial development."

Alric frowned.

"That could take years."

"Normally."

Antony’s eyes remained on the core. He knew something they didn’t.

The Family System, and the new territory trait.

If births increased... Population growth might no longer be their greatest limitation, but he couldn’t tell them that.

"We start anyway," he said.

Seris looked surprised.

"You actually want to evolve the core?"

"Yes."

The others exchanged glances.

Antony noticed.

"What?"

Alric smiled faintly.

"For ten years, every time someone suggested upgrading the territory, you said being Red was peaceful."

"It was."

"You said Orange territories attracted idiots."

"They do."

"You said ranking lists were a disease."

"They are."

Oren added, "You once called territorial ambition ’a complicated method of getting stabbed.’"

Antony sighed.

"I stand by all of those statements."

"Yet?" Oren asked.

Antony looked upward, as though he could see through hundreds of feet of stone toward the manor where his wife and child were sleeping.

"Yet things changed."

Nobody laughed at that.

Antony looked at his generals again.

"I don’t want an empire."

Alric nodded.

"I know."

"I don’t want to conquer neighboring Lords."

"Understood."

"I don’t care where we rank."

Oren raised an eyebrow.

"That one we definitely know," Oren mumbled loud enough for everyone to here.

"But I need enough strength that someone thinks twice before crossing our border." His voice became quieter. "Being harmless kept us safe when there was nothing here anyone wanted."

He looked at the core.

"That is no longer true."

The three men and women around him understood exactly what he meant.

Alric straightened.

"Then Orange," he said with conviction.

Antony nodded.

"Orange."

Seris smiled.

"And after Orange?"

Antony gave her a look.

"Let’s survive Orange first."

That finally earned a laugh. After another hour, they had the beginning of a plan:

Five new border watch positions, two experimental Mist Towers,a larger rotating patrol, a reserve militia drawn from volunteers, reinforced security around the manor and Territory Core, increased screening of merchants and travellers, acensus to identify unused land and determine how much additional population the territory could support and expansion of farms before population growth rather than after it.

There were also to be more healers and housing. Antony refused to create a larger army if he couldn’t feed it.

By the time the meeting ended, the others looked energized.

Antony mostly wanted to sleep.

He dismissed them one by one. Only after the chamber doors closed did he remain alone before the core.

For several seconds he watched the red light, then he quietly said, "Family System."

The interface appeared.

[Family System]

[Purpose:]

[The Family System exists to strengthen the Lord through the creation, protection, prosperity, and continuation of his family.]

[Family progression is not measured solely through combat.]

[Love, safety, health, growth, inheritance, milestones, and the development of a lasting home may all generate Family Prosperity.]

[Family Prosperity strengthens Family Skills, Family Territory Traits, descendant potential, and selected territory functions.]

Antony read slowly.

A second page appeared.

[Primary Family Categories]

[Spouse Development]

[Descendant Growth]

[Family Bonds]

[Family Safety]

[Household Prosperity]

[Legacy Development]

[Territory as Home]

Antony focused on the final one.

The system expanded it.

[Territory as Home]

[A family cannot prosper without a secure foundation.]

[The Family System recognizes Urelias Territory as the primary home of the Urelias Family.]

[Developments that meaningfully improve the safety, stability, health, comfort, education, or future of the Lord’s family may produce system rewards.]

[Territorial conquest without relevance to family prosperity produces reduced or no Family System rewards.]

Antony stared, then laughed quietly.

"Of course."

It fit him almost too well.

The system wasn’t telling him to conquer the world; it didn’t care if he was number one, it cared whether his family was safe, whether his children grew properly, whether Roxanna lived well, and whether their home could survive.

That was something Antony understood.

Another prompt appeared.

[New Family Quest.]

[The First Safe Home]

[Your firstborn has entered the world.]

[A child cannot protect himself.]

[Create a territory capable of protecting him.]

[Requirements:]

[Increase Territory Military Readiness to 50%.]

[Establish a permanent defensive barrier around the Lord’s manor.]

[Create one dedicated emergency shelter for the Lord’s family.]

[Maintain one month of food and medical reserves for Urelias Territory.]

[Reward:]

[Family Skill - Guardian’s Authority.]

[Family Prosperity +100.]

[Unlock: Firstborn Growth Functions.]

Antony’s expression changed at the final line.

"Growth functions?"

The system didn’t elaborate.

He sighed.

Then another notification appeared.

[Optional Territory Objective detected.]

[Evolve Urelias Territory Core: Red → Orange.]

[Completion before Firstborn Naming Ceremony will grant an additional reward.]

Antony stared in disbelief. His son’s naming ceremony was three weeks away. He looked toward the Territory Core, then back at the prompt.

"Three weeks?"

The core glowed innocently.

Antony rubbed his face.

"You couldn’t give me two months?"

No answer.

He laughed tiredly.

"Fine."

He stepped toward the core.

For ten years, he’d deliberately kept Urelias Territory small, comfortable, quiet, and forgettable. Antony rested one hand against the warm surface of the Red Territory Core.

"All right." The red light reflected in his green eyes. "Let’s see what it takes to turn you orange."
