The envoy from Lord Garron arrived at the manor shortly before noon, and Antony knew something was wrong before the man said a single word.

Not wrong in the sense of danger. There were no hidden soldiers gathering beyond the walls, no sudden change in the Territory Core, and Commander Seris had already confirmed that the envoy’s escort consisted of only twelve people waiting near the eastern administrative compound.

What bothered Antony was how carefully everything had been arranged. The timing, the official carriage bearing Garron’s crest, the expensive clothing, the sealed documents, even the fact that the envoy had made no attempt to request an immediate audience despite supposedly travelling under the authority of one of the strongest Orange Core Lords in the region.Full novel: Global lords: My wife is an SSS-RANKED Goddess. — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It was a performance.

And Antony had been a Lord long enough to recognize when someone wanted him to understand the difference in status before negotiations even began.

He stood near one of the tall windows in the reception hall while Oren gave the final summary.

"Lord Garron Serial. Orange Core territory, ranked seventh in the Eastern Veil Sector. Current registered population is slightly above forty-seven thousand, although the true number could be higher because several smaller settlements fall under his protection agreements without technically belonging to his core territory."

Antony glanced toward him. "Seven."

"Yes."

"Regional rank seven."

"Yes."

Antony looked back toward the window. "And I’m thirty-two."

"Thirty-one as of this morning."

Antony slowly turned his head.

Oren smiled.

"You gained another position."

"Stop telling me these things like they’re good news."

General Alric laughed from where he stood beside the door. "For most Lords, moving upward in the rankings is the objective."

"Most Lords don’t have a wife and a child half the world is looking for."

Alric’s amusement faded slightly at that.

Only Roxanna knew about the Family System, but Antony’s closest officers already understood that there were reasons he valued secrecy far more than an ordinary Red Core Lord should. None of them knew the full truth about Michael’s bloodline, and Antony intended to keep it that way for as long as possible.

Oren continued. "Garron’s primary race is Ironhorn Beastkin. Physically strong, good defensive units, high endurance, somewhat limited in ranged magic. Most of his military reputation comes from organization rather than racial superiority."

"How many territories are under him?"

"Directly? None."

Antony raised an eyebrow.

Oren smiled faintly. "Unofficially? At least six Red Core territories, possibly eight."

"Wow, that’s a lot."

"Three pay tribute. Two have protection agreements. One shares military infrastructure. The others are economically dependent enough that calling them independent is generous."

Alric folded his arms. "He doesn’t conquer unless he has to."

"That’s better than some."

"It also makes him harder to fight politically."

Antony sighed. "Naturally."

A knock sounded before one of the guards entered.

"My Lord, the envoy is ready."

Antony nodded. "Bring him in."

The envoy entered less than a minute later.

He was a Human rather than Beastkin, somewhere in his late forties, with dark grey hair cut neatly around his ears and an expensive black-and-bronze coat fastened by a brooch carrying Garron’s crest: a horned beast standing beneath an orange sun. Two assistants followed him carrying document cases, but neither spoke.

The man stopped at the appropriate distance and bowed.

"Lord Antony Urelias. It is a pleasure to finally meet you."

Antony gestured toward the chairs. "And you are?"

"Valen Tor. Senior diplomatic representative of Lord Garron Serial."

"Sit."

Valen did.

Antony took the chair opposite him while Oren sat slightly to his right. Alric remained standing near the wall.

Valen noticed all of it.

His eyes moved once toward Antony, once toward Oren, then briefly toward the general.

He smiled.

"I must admit, Lord Urelias, reports do not quite capture your territory."

Antony leaned back. "That sounds dangerous."

Valen chuckled. "Not at all. I meant it as a compliment. The roads approaching your eastern gate were far better maintained than expected."

"Thank you."

"The market is active."

"It usually is."

"Your patrols are disciplined."

Antony’s expression remained neutral. "Did you come to inspect my territory?"

Valen’s smile barely changed.

"Professional habit."

"Then I’m sure you’ll understand if I have some of my own."

"Of course."

Antony liked him less already. The man was too polished. It would have been easier if he was rude. Every sentence sounded friendly while quietly gathering information.

Valen gestured toward one of his assistants.

A document case was opened.

"Lord Serial asked me to extend his congratulations regarding the remarkable growth of Urelias Territory."

Antony said nothing.

Valen continued.

"Your position has improved considerably over the last several months. Population growth. Trade. Resource development. Improved military readiness. Several new agreements with neighboring Lords."

Antony smiled faintly.

"You’ve been paying close attention."

"It is Lord Serial’s responsibility to remain informed about developments within the region."

"Is it?" He quietly asked.

Valen paused.

Antony kept smiling.

The envoy continued smoothly. "Naturally. Stability benefits everyone."

Oren looked down at his documents, hiding what Antony suspected was amusement.

Valen drew out a sealed parchment.

"Lord Serial therefore wishes to offer you something he believes would be mutually beneficial."

Antony already knew but he still allowed the man to speak.

"A formal protection and cooperation agreement between Serial Territory and Urelias Territory."

Antony glanced toward Oren but the man didn’t react.

Valen placed the document on the table.

"Under the agreement, Urelias Territory would receive guaranteed military assistance in the event of external aggression, access to Serial-controlled trade roads, preferred participation in regional markets, and formal recognition under Lord Serial’s protection."

Antony looked at the parchment.

"Sounds generous."

"It is."

"What’s the cost?"

Valen’s smile deepened slightly.

"Not cost, my Lord. Obligations."

"Those tend to be costs with better manners."

Alric coughed behind him.

Valen’s eyes flicked toward the general before returning to Antony.

"All agreements require compromise."

"Naturally."

Valen opened the contract.

"Urelias Territory would contribute an annual protection payment equal to eight percent of taxable production."

Antony didn’t react.

"Additionally, in matters of major regional conflict, you would coordinate military movements through Serial command."

His fingers stopped against the chair.

Valen continued.

"Expansion into contested resource zones would require joint consultation to avoid destabilizing existing arrangements."

"Define contested."

"Any territory or resource site claimed by more than one recognized Lord."

"And who recognizes the claim?" He asked again.

Valen paused.

"Regional authorities."

Antony smiled.

"Meaning Lord Serial."

"Among others."

"Of course."

Valen continued as though nothing had happened.

"Lastly, Urelias Territory would recognize Lord Garron Serial as senior regional guarantor."

There it is.

Antony looked toward Oren.

Oren finally spoke.

"What practical authority would that recognition grant Lord Serial?"

Valen turned toward him.

"Only what is necessary to maintain regional stability."

Oren smiled pleasantly.

"Could you be specific?"

"Military coordination, arbitration during territorial disputes, oversight of sensitive expansion zones, and temporary intervention during emergencies."

Antony looked down at the contract, then back at Valen.

"Vassalage."

The envoy’s expression changed for the first time, only slightly.

"My Lord, I would not characterize it that way."

"I would."

"The agreement preserves your internal autonomy."

"Except my military movements."

"In external conflict."

"My expansion."

"Only into contested areas."

"My trade."

"Only where Lord Serial’s protected routes are involved."

"And my territorial disputes."

"Arbitration prevents unnecessary wars."

Antony nodded slowly.

"So I keep autonomy everywhere you aren’t involved."

Valen sat slightly straighter.

"Lord Urelias, I believe you’re viewing this more harshly than intended."

"No. I think I’m viewing it exactly as intended."

Silence settled across the room.

Antony reached for the contract and read several sections properly. The wording was excellent which made it worse.

There was no direct clause saying Urelias Territory became subordinate. Nothing stating Garron could appoint officials. Nothing demanding troops under normal circumstances. Nothing openly humiliating.

Instead, every important decision had been surrounded by conditions that ultimately placed Serial Territory above his own.
